In my generation all we ever learned was that there were indentured servants, and nothing more. Mrs. Hoffman gives us the details in solid, simple language. In fact her language is authentically of that period in history making the book a wonderful piece of historical fiction. She answers many questions: How were indentured servants treated? How did they get here from England? Did they communicate with their families back in England? How did they assimilate into colonial society and culture? Did any leave and return to England? How did they react to the Revolutionary War? For whom did they fight? What was a typical farm life like? Chores, food, cooking? Health practices, diseases and treatments? The novel follows two young girls, one sold by her father to pay debts, the other kidnapped and sold directly to a ship master. Both enter domestic servitude in two different farming families and life in those circumstances is related in fascinating detail. This novel helps answer many questions I had since my first ancestor in America was also an indentured servant.
