Review Roper's follow-up to A Well-Seasoned Kitchen expands on the approachable favorites that made her first effort such a hit, this time with a fresh take on classics that lend themselves to parties and get-togethers. The titular logic is a little awkward, but her recipes are graceful: smoked salmon eggs Benedict with mustard-dill sauce, cucumber leek vichyssoise, and Thai peanut shrimp over linguine live up to her theme without requiring a culinary degree. Even readers with little cooking or baking experience will be able to assemble impressive offerings such as tomato shortbread with olive tapenade, lemon-rosemary swordfish en papillote, or corn and prosciutto salad. The collection of over 170 dishes favors dinners and parties (sample menus for events that range from picnics to Thanksgiving are included) but there are also plenty of comfort food hits such as Cajun meatloaf and banana caramel baked French toast. Though it might not make the year-end lists of culinarians, Roper's fans will love it. The late Dorothy Hartwell's potato salad By Joanne Davidson What makes this book special -- at least for those who live in Denver -- is the glimpse it gives into the lives and tastes of others. Lee grew up in a prominent family and thus made some equally prominent friends, all of whom were terrific cooks. The late Dorothy Hartwell's potato salad, for example, was a tradition at the Hartwell family's summer dinner. Missy Eliot's Spiced Bacon Twists are served at the ornament exchange brunch that Missy hosts every year, and Diane Reeder introduced Lee to her Pureed Black Bean Soup during a ski club outing. I have made each of them and can vouch for the taste treat that they are. Lee's husband, Robert Roper, figures prominently, too. His recipes for the Perfect Manhattan and the Perfect Martini are bookmarked for my holiday entertaining, and for an upcoming potluck lunch I am going to contribute the egg salad and smoked salmon on a toasted bagel that Lee created for him. The book also includes helpful tips ("Sometimes a can of organic tomatoes adds more flavor than an out-of-season fresh one") and sample menus for such occasions as a Valentine's Day Dinner, Easter Brunch or a Memorial Day Get-Together. This is one cookbook you won't want to miss!

Mushroom, Spinach and Onion Frittata with Goat Cheese uses egg whites instead of whole eggs to lighten the dish. The salad section includes delicious side salads as well as salads to use as a main dish such as Grilled Steak, Roasted Potatoes and Tomato Salad or Chicken, Blueberry and Mango Salad.I like that there is a nice mixture of light dishes and heartier, comfort food (though usually with a healthy twist) suchc as Coq au Vin, Chicken Pot Pie, Beef Stew with Caramelized Root Vegetables (oh, my!) and more. In the fish section you can find a light and delicious Lemon-Rosemary Swordfish en Papillote or a more robust Ham and Shrimp Jambalaya. There's even a lovely pasta section. There's such a nice selection of healthier pastas these days that it's nice to include a delicious pasta dish in your weekly menu without feeling guilty about it. Vegetarians will be happy to find a section of main dishes just for them.Side dishes run the gamut from Shredded Brussels Sprouts with Bacon, a personal favorite, to Cheese Grits Souffle and Italian Popovers. Dessert lovers, don't despair! You're covered with a delectable selection of pies, tarts, mousses, cakes, fruit & ice cream, cookies and brownies. May I just say that the Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies are to die for?!? We've made them twice already and I'm ready for another batch!Fresh Tastes from a Well-Season Kitchen is a well rounded, delightful cookbook with something for everyone. I highly recommend it!I received a galley proof from MLC Publishing through the Nagler Agency and Lisa Ekus Group for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lee Clayton Roper has an uncanny knack for providing unique yet straightforward recipes for the exact sort of dishes you want to cook and serve but would never have thought of yourself. Consider Banana Caramel Baked French Toast, or Roasted Root Vegetable Pot Pie or Chicken, Blueberry and Mango Salad. These are recipes for every style and taste and I love the fact that she ties them all together in scrumptious menus. This book is a terrific addition to my already vast cookbook collection. It is chock-full of wonderful ideas you won't find anywhere else!
