About the Author W. C. Whitfield was born in 1879. He was the author of Here’s How: Mixed Drinks and Just Cocktails, both originally published by Three Mountaineers, Inc., a small woodshop in Asheville, North Carolina.Joaquín Simó has done it all in his fifteen years in the food and beverage industry. He spent more than five years at New York’s acclaimed cocktail bar Death & Company, serving guests the colorful stories and hallowed history of classic spirits and cocktails. He served as deputy editor for the 2009 and 2010 Food & Wine Cocktail books, was named one of Playboy’s Top 10 Mixologists in 2009, and was awarded the 2012 Spirited Award as American Bartender of the Year. Joaquín is also currently a partner in Alchemy Consulting and can be found behind the stick at their NYC New York City flagship bar, Pouring Ribbons.

No matter how skilled one may be at combining spirits and mixers, someone is bound to ask for a drink that necessitates the need for an official guide. Of course, one could turn to the internet but it’s always nice to have a printed guide available to reference and one such guide is W.C. Whitfield’s Mixed Drinks and Cocktails.I have been known to mix up the occasional cocktail and I like trying new things so a guide like this does have practical use for someone like me. Like most people, I’m already well versed at the popular drinks such as whiskey sours, margaritas, screwdrivers, and the like. But with a guide such as this, one can find new and more adventurous mixed drinks, many of which can be made with standard liquors, mixers, and common household ingredients. Many will enjoy browsing through the guide and looking for new things to try and this is certainly one of the books many uses.This guide is organized differently than others. Rather than arrange drinks by type of liquor, the book includes chapters based on some sort of theme, like Old School Favorites, Pretty Cocktails, Highballs, etc. If you already know the name of a drink and want to know how to make it, you may want to consult the alphabetical index. Otherwise, you might be flipping pages for a while before finding the desired beverage.As the subtitle of this book suggests, this is an old school guide and while some may be intrigued by the idea of getting back to basics, I found this feature quite limiting. For one, the recipes are many to a page and they include no instructions- just a simple list of ingredients. Yes, they are easy enough to figure out, but some will not like the absence of hand- holding so common with other drink books. Then, there are the weak illustrations. They are nothing more than small drawings and nothing like the colorful, tempting, full color photographs you get with other bartending guides.A drink guide is essential for the home or bar and, in some regards, W.C. Whitfield’s Mixed Drinks and Cocktails fulfills its purpose. There are better bartending books out there, but if you like your drink mixing guide simple, to the point, and free from much guidance or attractive illustrations, then this guide might be the one for you.Note: I received this product complimentary in exchange for an unbiased review, but I was not compensated in any way.

Great compilation of historical cocktails By Lisa Howard If you're into obscure drinks harkening back to the days of American cocktail yore, you'll love this surprisingly complete compilation of cocktail recipes (600+). They're sorted into various categories, including "pretty," "epicurean," "well-dressed," and "favorite sons," and fortunately, there's also a master index for easy drink-finding. A quick one-pager of useful information leads into the recipes, with another quick-but-handy list of glassware (with illustrations) to finish everything off. Fans of late 1930s/early 1940s sketch art will enjoy the whimsical pen-and-ink illustrations sprinkled throughout the book, and fans of essays from that period can read Whitfield's prose to get a snapshot of that golden era of our collective cocktail past. As a casual dabbler in food and beverage history, I would have enjoyed more extensive descriptions of select drinks--how they came to be, the stories behind their key ingredients--but as someone who likes practical how-to recipes, I would recommend this book to mixologists both amateur and professional. Plus, its compact size makes the book easy to keep on your shelf for whenever you want a taste of the past!
