This resplendent volume is the most comprehensive study of Walker Evans's work ever published, containing masterful images accompanied by authoritative commentary from leading photography historians. The name Walker Evans conjures images of the American everyman. Whether it's his iconic contributions to James Agee's depressionera classic book, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, his architectural explorations of antebellum plantations, or his subway series, taken with a camera hidden in his coat, Evans's accessible and eloquent photographs speak to us all. This comprehensive book traces the entire arc of Evans's remarkable career, from the 1930s to the 1970s. The illustrations in the book range from his earliest images taken with a vest pocket camera to his final photos using the then new SX-70 because his regular equipment had become too heavy to carry around. The book includes commentary from three of Evans's longtime friends, photographers John T. Hill and Jerry Thompson and professor emeritus (Yale University) Alan Trachtenberg. Their insight and first-hand experience give depth to their critical writings on Evans's work. In addition to offering a broad perspective on Evans's work, the book also clarifies the photographer's "anti-art" philosophy. Eschewing aesthetic hyperbole, Evans wanted his pictures to resonate with a wide audience. At the same time, his natural curiosity made him one of the most inventive photographers of all time. What these photographs and writings attest to is a huge and timeless talent, which came not from a camera, but from Evans's uniquely hungry eye.

Review // SELECTED AS ONE OF THE 10 BEST PHOTO BOOKS OF 2015 //
"Walker Evans is one of the towering figures in the history of photography. This massive book, which traces his career from his earliest photographic experiments to his most well-known works, is an essential volume for any photography library."
--Slate.com
"Experts may differ as to the greatest 20th century American photographer: Edward Weston? Diane Arbus? Robert Frank? This book makes an exhaustive and convincing case for Walker Evans, who brought the irresistible force of his intelligent eye to bear on the immovable facts of the world. The best of his pictures still smolder with the heat of that fusion."--San Francisco Chronicle

The Best Book on Walker Evans By Lindroth + Newick Depth of Field is the most ambitious and beautifully presented book on master photographer Walker Evans to date. It is grand in its vision of the man and his work and will provide the reader with hours and years of viewing pleasure.John Hill’s design precision is evident in the book’s pacing and the sublime sizing and sequencing of photographs. The reader is jarred, surprised, reminded and rewarded as pages are turned in this exquisitely printed volume. It is at once a brilliant homage to Hill’s mentor and colleague and a catalog raisonée of a life’s work. The book supports a traveling exhibition of Walker Evans’s oeuvre highlighting every aspect of his photographic brilliance from the early work of the 1920’s through Cuba and the Antebellum south, the FSA and Let Us Now Praise Famous Men to his magazine years at Fortune, his Polaroid SX-70 snapshots and his vast and prized collection of advertising signs and objets.Thoughtful essays by Evans close friends Jerry L. Thompson, Alan Trachtenberg, with an introduction by Hill as well as timely critiques by Dr. Heinz Liesbrock, Director of the Josef Albers Museum in Bottrop where the exhibition originated, and curator Thomas Weski. Significant writing by Evans himself is also included. It’s all here in one beautiful book. The exhibition will travel from Bottrop, Germany to the High Museum in Atlanta and then to Vancouver. It would be hard to imagine a better or more complete book on Walker Evans than Depth of Field.

A splendid new Walker Evans book By Rodger Kingston "Walker Evans: Depth Of Field" may well be the most splendid Walker Evans book produced in the years since the photographer died just over four decades ago. At 400 pages it is not a volume to carry around and peruse on the subway, or during coffee at Starbucks; instead, this is a book to sit down with in a comfortable chair, in good light, and with time to spend getting to know it well.Designed and with an Introduction by John T. Hill, and edited by Hill and Heinz Leisbrock, "Walker Evans: Depth Of Field" is an elegant production, with a spacious, clean layout and beautiful printing. The photographs are presented chronologically, and interspersed with essays and extended captions by Jerry L. Thompson, Alan Trachtenberg, Thomas Weskit, Heinz Leisbrock, and John T. Hill.As an Evans collector and bibliographer, I am familiar with the many books by and about Walker Evans; without doubt, "Walker Evans: Depth Of Field" is among the half dozen or so essential Evans books that belong on the shelf alongside the photographer's own "American Photographs."

The book is a masterpiece—and it is without question the definitive presentation of the work of this great American artist By Ann Stewart Justly renowned for his Depression era photographs of the South, Walker Evans's hungry eye and aesthetic captured far, far more. That becomes quickly apparent from the extraordinary range of subjects and locales in Walker Evans: Depth of Field. This stunningly elegant book allows the reader to follow and share the development of the working photographer's artistic vision, while simply enjoying the captivating photographs. The book is a masterpiece—and it is without question the definitive presentation of the work of this great American artist. It was created by an authoritative panel of thinkers, curators, and artists, and it is dedicated to showing the scope and brilliance of the lifelong career of Walker Evans. The exquisite design and layout, the fascinating facts and essays, and the enduring power of these photographs (some never before published) make this book an important work of art in itself and a gift to all who love Evans.
