Dump Dinner for Choosy & Busy People By Robert Sherlin The idea is s good one and the recipes sound tasty, but the instructions are very confusing, as is some steps are assumed/omitted. A little more clarification and attention to detail would make the recipes much easier to attempt.

Agricultural Diversity and The Age of Exploration By Warren Liebold I had positive expectations for this book based on Dave DeWitt’s earlier publications on food and culture centered on colonial America and Renaissance Italy, but I wasn’t prepared for the scope and depth of this book. This is a very detailed history of the vegetables and fruits that originated in the New World and were then distributed by both humans and other agents (birds, the wind, etc.) through the continents of the Old World during the “age of exploration.”Many people will remember that potatoes, now common throughout Europe, originated in South America. Readers who have encountered Dave DeWitt before are likely to know that chiles that have transformed the cuisines of most Asian countries and put several European countries into the paprika business originated in the New World. That’s just the start: tomatoes, corn, eggplant, pineapple, avocados and turkey were also part of the transfer from the New World to the Old. This process is told through a series of stories about explorers, farmers, monarchs and early food historians involved with the introduction and acceptance – often not immediate – of the new foods. There’s also a very good section recounting the relationship between the sugar cane trade and the development of the slave trade.This is an academic-quality book with constant references to information sources.For me, at least, there were three underlying themes in “Precious Cargo”. “Authentic cuisine” refers only to the current style of that cuisine since all cuisines have evolved over the decades and centuries. “Invasive species” refers to introductions where things didn’t go so well. In many cases the introduction of new species had smooth and positive reactions and the result is now considered the norm. Finally, although history usually deals with exercises of political and military power, the more subtle changes wrought by cultural change can be just as important and certainly just as interesting.

Well researched and well written, beautifully illustrated and printed on high-quality paper, this 400-page book is a feast for both the eyes and the mind.David DeWitt delves into economics, archeology, botany, zoology, and social history to tell how foods from the Americas traveled around the world and influenced the cuisines of Europe, Africa, and Asia. His style of writing is highly readable, avoiding academic jargon and food polemics.Precious Cargo focuses mainly on the global dissemination of avocados, chile peppers, chocolate, corn (maize), turkeys, tomatoes, potatoes, peanuts, and vanilla from the Western Hemisphere. It also deals with sugar and coffee, two "adopted foods" from the Eastern Hemisphere that took root in the Americas and became international commodities.Befitting a book by "the Pope of Peppers"—an author whose previous 50 books have been primarily about chile peppers and hot-spicy cuisines—plenty of attention in Precious Cargo is given to the varieties of capsicum peppers now eaten by people around the world. But this emphasis is not at the expense of other New World crops and their impact on the culinary history of the places that ultimately adopted these new ingredients after Columbus's first voyage to the East Indies landed him on Caribbean islands instead.Although not a cookbook, Precious Cargo does contain several historical recipes. And the mouthwatering descriptions of many specific dishes from different countries will make you want to find out how to cook them at home yourself. Highly recommended for readers not only interested in food, but also those interested in natural history and world history. Buy one for yourself and others as hostess gifts for friends who love food.

This book is huge and it takes time to read. I learned so much and I know that I will need to read it a couple of more times just to absorb it all. I rarely read a book more than once but this is an exception to that. I think history buffs that are not particularly interested in food would enjoy this too.

By Sandra Kennedy I highly recommend Christopher Douglas Warrington's book, "Garlic and Grapes: Cookbook One (Volume 1.) Why? I love the diverse choice of recipes from Southern Europe.The author has 20 categories ranging from "Appetizers" to "Cakes and Cookies." I plan to try several recipes such as: "Croque Tartiiflette - Bacon and Cheese Grilled Sandwich" from Paris, France," Psari Sto Fourno - Backed Fish with Stewed Tomatoes" and "Rolito or Bragjoli - Beef Olives." I appreciate the format for the book. After information about the author, each section contains an interesting history of each country, such as Cyprus, Portugal and dozens of others. The recipe has a photo and detailed directions for preparation and cooking. It is written in a style which is easy to follow. At the back of the book is a "Cuisine Index." I shared my book with friends. They would like us to get together and create an International Feast which brings together friends with gourmet cuisine from Southern Europe. Christopher Warrington began cooking in his teenage years while living in England. After several moves, he currently lives in Andalucia, Spain with a countryside view of vineyards an olive trees. Christopher Douglas Warrington has written a detailed and comprehensive book.

About the Author John T. Hill was Yale University's first Director of Graduate Studies in Photography. In 1975, on the death of his friend, Walker Evans, he became executor of that estate. He is the author of several books. Heinz Liesbrock is the director of the Josef Albers Museum in Bottrop, Germany. His exhibitions and writings primarily deal with aspects of American art and literature, from Edward Hopper, Josef Albers, and Ad Reinhardt to Raymond Chandler.

The Best Book on Walker Evans By Lindroth + Newick Depth of Field is the most ambitious and beautifully presented book on master photographer Walker Evans to date. It is grand in its vision of the man and his work and will provide the reader with hours and years of viewing pleasure.John Hill’s design precision is evident in the book’s pacing and the sublime sizing and sequencing of photographs. The reader is jarred, surprised, reminded and rewarded as pages are turned in this exquisitely printed volume. It is at once a brilliant homage to Hill’s mentor and colleague and a catalog raisonée of a life’s work.The book supports a traveling exhibition of Walker Evans’s oeuvre highlighting every aspect of his photographic brilliance from the early work of the 1920’s through Cuba and the Antebellum south, the FSA and Let Us Now Praise Famous Men to his magazine years at Fortune, his Polaroid SX-70 snapshots and his vast and prized collection of advertising signs and objets.Thoughtful essays by Evans close friends Jerry L. I like the approach this book takes by suggesting foods to manage the discomforts of IBS rather than medications. There is a list of safe foods to eat as well as best practices to use when starting the Fodmap diet. There are even sample recipes to help the sufferer get started and know what to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. The recipes are delicious by the way.

She insists that you need to be gluten free if you are going to follow the roadmap diet, which is contrary to what I have read and been advised by several doctors. She also includes in her suggestions foods that can be triggers for people suffering from IBS, such as cheese, apples and almonds.

Then it goes into recipes without any suggestions on freezing, then there are sections with many recipes that don't even give the carb count. For the price, the first part of the book is satisfactory but after that you'll have to do some searching to find a recipe that is low-carb let alone with instructions on freezing.

This Can Be A Carb Watcher's Best Friend By Tara Tara I borrowed this book via KU, and I must say, it is, by far, one of the most comprehensive recipe books I have ever encountered in recent memory. There are more than 200 dishes here, all of which are tailor-made for people who want to shed those extra pounds without compromising the energy that their bodies need for their day-to-day activities. All of the recipes, with the exception of a group of seven (and only because I don't like yogurt), are delicious! What makes them even more splendid is the fact that the author arranged these recipes to be easy-to-cook, out-of-the-freezer and straight-into-the-frying-pan kind of delicacies that even the busiest of folks would be able to prepare quickly. All of the ingredients I have seen so far aren't hard-to-find. No need to scour the backstreets of China Town just to find an ingredient that would complete a dish's taste. Everything you'll need can be purchased from the local supermarket.All in all, Low Carb Freezer Meals is a fantastic addition to any carb watcher's library. It is sure to sit on my shelf for a long, long time.

About the Author

Danny Bowien is the chef and cofounder of three restaurants: Mission Chinese Food in San Francisco and New York and Mission Cantina in New York. In 2008 he improbably won the Pesto World Championship in Genoa, Italy, and in 2013 the James Beard Foundation named him Rising Star Chef of the Year. He was born in Korea, raised in Oklahoma, and now lives in New York with his wife, Youngmi, and their son, Mino.

Chris Ying worked as designer, editor, and publisher of McSweeney's before becoming editor in chief of Lucky Peach. He is the coauthor of Ivan Ramen and a founder of the nonprofit organization ZeroFoodprint. He lives in San Francisco with his wife, Jami.

Lakip As mentioned, this book is like half life/restaurant interview/story, so if you're looking for 300 recipes, this isn't the book for you. Then again, I also wasn't expecting 300 recipes because, having been to Mission Chinese, they don't really have the kind of menu that you would expect to find 300 recipes in a book. However this book has most/all the hits the restaurant is known for, so if you're looking for a way to recreate them you should check it out. See Table of Contents picture since Amazon isn't providing one:

Look, if your into American style chinese food then look no further. The author admits this isn't classic chinese. It's new age, its bold, spicy and great food. Is it easy to cook? No. Are the ingredients readily available? No. But your on Amazon now, and you can order most of the ingredients online. You can use the ingredients on other recipes. If you like David Changs MomoFuku, then this is right up your alley. You want easy to cook, everyday asian style recipes? Then look at Lucky Peach's 101 Easy Asian Recipes. Great read, great cook book, good times.

There are recipes that will involve ordering ingredients online if you don't live in a city with a large Asian market, and there are recipes that involve advanced cooking techniques, but it's not every recipe--and some of us enjoy a good 3-day-long recipe once and awhile! I've already learned a new way to make mapo tofu, and I'm excited to try the dandan noodles variations. Great purchase.

It is not fancy with colorful pictures that adds to the cost of the book, but all I care is well-written recipes. I am a Turkish American and can be a judge for a good Turkish dish. These recipes will provide your and your guests' taste buds with enjoyable memories. If you are familiar with Turkish food, you will appreciate the deliverables of these recipes. What you buy with the amount you pay is unbeatable. I highly recommend this book.

The captain was assigned to put a stop to it. He put plainclothes officers with shotguns hiding in the back of the stores. Officer Johnson reported to his assigned location with double-aught buckshot in his weapon. He instructed the convenience store clerk if a bandit appeared, she was to put her hands in the air and holler "O" and crouch down. He hid behind some boxes and waited. From his position, he observed a subject walk up to the counter while the clerk had her back turned. He fumbled with the front of his pants, and when the clerk turned around, she threw her hands in the air and hollered "O." Johnson stepped out and unloaded his shotgun, blowing the subject out the front glass door. When he walked to the door, he observed a male lying on the pavement with his penis hanging out. The clerk said, "What would you do if you turned around and a penis was lying on the counter?"

From the Author My book "Cops Are People Too was written about accounts that have taken place over the thirty four years of service I had with the Amarillo Police Department.  All the stories are true but I have added creative dialogue   since I know how police officers act and talk at crime scenes. To prevent embarrassing some officers the names have been changed while others are true names. I began my career as a patrolman and promoted up the ranks to captain before I retired.  Several of my friends have purchased my book in order to see if they are involved in some of the stories.  The feed-back from sales is " Hey I remember that incident. That sure brings back memories."

It was more about his life having affairs and chasing woman. The only good part was the story on the Pinkerton killing. The rest of the book was horrible. I honestly didn't even read the entire book, I had to skip over some parts.

By LaVerne LaFever Silor I chose the book because I know Milton Pool as I worked as a dispatcher for the Amarillo PD back in the mid 60's. I was the first woman dispatcher which I felt was a great honor. I loved the book because it reminded me of some things I had heard about and a lot of the old timer names I remember the people and it was an honor to hear about them again. The story that touched me the most happened when I worked for the Department of Public Safety and it was the 2 Boys Ranchers that ran away. DPS Patrolman Richard Beale and DPS Patrolman Gary Minion were both acquaintances of mine and this was a very touching story for me. I had heard a lot but this was the first time I actually heard or read the dispatch record and that gave it a feeling of going through this again.. You see no matter what has happened when a 14 or 15 year old boy is shot it is a tragedy as was the shooting of Officer Meadows. Good job Milton Pool.

Great selection of recipes By Lydia H I love one pot cooking, as a busy person, it is so easy to use your slow cooker or pressure cooker just to put the ingredients in and leave them while you get on with something else. This book has some great low carbohydrate recipes that you can cook easily while using the one pot cooking technique. Its great how many diverse recipes you can get and I especially love chicken cooked this way. Well worth getting and a great selection of recipes whether you are on a low carb diet or not.

The dishes are very varied and are prepared using either slow cooker, pressure cooker or Dutch oven which are easy to prepare since they are usually one pot meals. So, you can also save time. More importantly, all the recipes are low in carbohydrates. So, if you are health and weight conscious like me, this book will help you stay in shape!

This is a lifestyle change. I'm a single guy in my own apartment so the words easy. and delicious help me tremendously. I work at home like one of my favorite artist, Patric Nagel. He's the one to do the cover of Duran Duran's album Rio. Yeah, that guy. He was incredibly talented to me, but he lived on cigarettes, coffee, a sandwich, and a candy bar. He went to a celebrity work out charity, and did some calisthenics. After the event, he left, got in his car, and never drove off. His diet gave him his heart attack. I'm just telling you that because it doesn't matter your popularity, or status, your diet makes you. This low carb recipe book can stop that kind of demise.

Many of the recipes are also low fat. All of them are easy to prepare and there's something for every taste in here including slow cooker recipes and ones you can make on the grill. Some of the measurements are in grams and milliliters so if you're a typical American like me and used to ounces and teaspoons you may want to have a conversion chart handy. It also starts off with a short discussion of the benefits and advantages of reducing your carb intake.This book has some great recipes for anyone who needs a low-carb diet. I look forward to trying all of these recipes out and picking out my favorites. I will be using this book again and again.

Diabetes runs in our family that is why we need to be cautious on the food we eat specially the amount of sugar and carbs we intake. Having this book is a good aid specially for people like me who wants to trim down carbs in the diet. I can now enjoy foods without even worrying on the amount of carbs I would get since this book provides low carb recipes. Listed in here are various recipe suggestion which you and your family can enjoy during breakfast, lunch or dinner. procedure provided are simple and easy to follow. I would try doing some of the recipes provided in here. Good book indeed.
