I had the wonderful opportunity to read By Janelle S I had the wonderful opportunity to read, cook from and review, Whitney Miller's newest cookbook, New Southern Table. One of the things that drew me to reviewing this book was that Whitney Miller was one of the winners of the tv show, Master Chef. I have enjoyed watching several seasons of Master Chef and was thrilled to be able to cook some of the recipes. What do I love about the book?I love that it is hardcover with a dust jacket and it's not a HUGE book. It is approximately 7"x9".I also love that the paper is a heavier, glossy type of paper. It's the type of paper that you could lightly wipe off with a slightly damp cloth if you accidentally spilled on the book. The pictures are AMAZING!The recipes are really based on whole foods. There are not a lot of canned or prepared ingredients in the recipes. After using the book for a few weeks, it stays open fairly well which helps when I'm cooking in the kitchen. What don't I about the book? Some of the recipes used more "exotic" ingredients and ones that I don't normally have on handThe average serving size was for four people and that is a little bit on the small side for our current family. All in all, I really enjoyed the book, the several recipes that I made out of it and it has earned a spot on my cookbook bookshelf.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. Traditional Southern Recipes with Modern Flavor By Nancy Famolari I grew up in the North and only got exposed to real Southern cooking a few years ago when we moved South. I loved the flavors, but many dishes seemed too calorie laden for everyday fare. I was pleased to discover Whitney Miller's latest cookbook. It contains typical Southern recipes, but with additions that make them more palatable to people watching their calories.I particularly enjoyed making the Olive Oil Biscuits. They're delicious, and they use olive oil which is more heart healthy than lard or even butter. Other recipes I enjoyed are the tomato gravy. I love tomatoes and this coupled with biscuits makes an easy lunch or light supper. The recipes are easy to make and best of all the author uses a relatively small, typical list of ingredients. There are are a few recipes that require new spices, but when interesting, I'm eager to give them a try. The recipes requiring additional spices come from Whitney adding touches to traditional recipes from her trips to other countries and sampling their cuisine. I think she's done a great job blending new flavors with traditional recipes. The cookbook contains all the sections you'd expect from breakfast to dinner with desserts and recipes for condiments, like catsup and roasted barbeque sauce. The pictures in the book, particularly those of her family, are fun. However, I like the pictures of the finished dishes and the steps used in preparing some some of the food. This is a great cookbook for everyday use. Several of the recipes have become favorites, and I'm sure more will when I have time to try them.I reviewed this book for BookLook Bloggers.

I love cooking and baking, so I was excited to see that this one was available for review from BookLook Bloggers.I've never used a southern cookbook before, and I was afraid it would be full of the typical fatty southern food. There was some of that of course, but I was pleasantly surprised at the mix of healthier, vegetarian, and gluten-free options that were also included. Whitney's cookbook includes a good balance of classic and modern recipes. This book has a lot of what I like to call "accidental vegetarian" recipes. In fact, almost three-quarters of the book is meat-free, great for a vegetarian like me!I can be picky about cookbooks. I've used a lot of them, so I know what works for me and what doesn't. I like my cookbooks to have full-color photos for each of the recipes so I have a visual of what the recipe will look like when I cook it myself. Whitney's cookbook has beautiful full-page photos for most of the recipes, but not all of them. I also prefer cookbooks that use common ingredients that aren't difficult to find and are easy to use. Whitney includes a list of basic southern pantry ingredients needed for these recipes right at the beginning of the book, and all are familiar ingredients that are available at any local grocery store.I do wish that the recipes included nutritional information, like the calories, fat, and sugar contents. The total prep time needed for each recipe also isn't listed, which I think is necessary information. Despite the many full-page photos included, there is a significant lack of process photos. That is why I usually prefer food blogs over cookbooks, because they often include step-by-step photos of the recipe making process, which is really important for home cooks (like me!) who don't always know what they're doing. Here are some of the recipes I'm most excited to try:Stuffed white squash dip with baked pita chipsSkillet cornPea pestoSriracha spread
