In 1987, off-the-grid punk agitator Larry Livermore began documenting the burgeoning DIY East Bay punk rock scene with the newly founded Lookout Records. He had no idea this little label, first run out of his solar powered cabin in the Northern California mountains, then a cramped room in the backstreets of Berkeley, would rise to international prominence, introducing the world to the likes of Green Day, Operation Ivy, and a host of other artists. How To Ru(i)n A Record Label documents the author’s experiences from Gilman Street to Bialystok, Poland, as he built Lookout from the ground up, only to find himself losing control of the label a mere ten years later, and abruptly walking away from the multi-million dollar company when it was at its peak of success. Throughout that time, however, he was central to the influential scene that gave birth to Gilman Street, Maximum Rocknroll, and a new generation of independent music that has had an everlasting effect on both the underground and mainstream. In the process, he just might even have found himself. Larry Livermore was the co-founder of Lookout Records, the editor and publisher of Lookout magazine, and a longtime columnist for Maximum Rocknroll and Punk Planet. His first memoir, Spy Rock Memories, was published in 2013 by Don Giovanni Records. He lives in Brooklyn.

How to Ru(i)n a Record Label: The Story of Lookout Records, by Larry Livermore

Review Livermore writes with deference for his time spent on Spy Rock, finding a way to keep nostalgia from clouding his experiences, and the book s breezy nature finds its middle ground between music memoir and personal essay. Spy Rock Memories paints its characters in lush details, allowing for readers to be welcomed into the culture of Iron Peak, just as Livermore was all those decades ago. --The AV ClubSpy Rock Memories is an unflinching look at life in Northern California s Emerald Triangle, a world usually hidden from view. Part social history and part personal history, it is as critically insightful as it is hopelessly romantic. --Aaron CometbusGreaser, hippie, glam rocker, punk... Larry tells some amazing stories. And I m stoked he s my friend. --Billie Joe Armstrong

By Jason from Iowa Lemme get a couple things straight....I really don't care about Lookout Records. I don't like a lot of the bands on there, if any. I guess I liked the first Donnas singles and LP. But I've participated in some "friendly" discussions with Larry on Usenet back when people used Usenet, I always found him a funny and insightful man, even if the Venn diagram where our tastes meet is very, very small. I bought this book because I am a fan of that particular point in time musically, though not the geography at all. I'm interested in independent labels, especially the ones who maintained integrity, and I knew it would at least be funny because Larry is a funny guy. I was really impressed with this book and with Larry. He was very candid about his pre-Lookout years and very open about when he messed up. He shares credit but not so much blame. The last few years of his involvement in Lookout, it's quite easy to see why he left when he did and how he is happier for it. There's some funny rock and roll stories in here, some quite harrowing personal details about Larry's life and the lives of his label mates, just enough name dropping to keep you interested and Larry's wit which sparkles on every page. Unlike a billion other rock and roll books, this was written 100% by Larry - it's obvious on every page.

By Aaron Rubin I have to admit to a bit of a bias because I was there for at least some of the story that Larry tells in this book, and my reading is colored by nostalgia and personal affection for Lookout and the people involved. But by any measure, this is an entertaining, well-written and honest recounting of a special time in the history of rock music, as well as a touching memoir. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in the story of Lookout and the East Bay punk scene, rock music in general, or even just good writing!

Lookout Records was my introduction to punk and indie rock in junior high/high school in the mid nineties and the label really meant alot to me. I still remember the first time I got my order in the mail from Lookout, filled with stickers and posters with cool hand drawn art and catalogs I would read every line of. From then I bought every Lookout record that I could scrounge up enough money to get my hands on and before I knew it I was starting my own band.At that time I knew very little about Larry, which made reading this all the more interesting. It's a very well written, firsthand account of the Lookout story that I couldn't put down. I was really sad when I heard the news that Lookout closed its doors and am now even more so after reading how it actually unfolded. I'll be the first to admit that I moved on to preferring releases from labels like Vagrant, Drive-Thru, Asian Man and Fueled by Ramen but in my opinion they all followed the blueprint Lookout created.
