The author lays out not a minimalist approach but a restricted approach to photography. If the goal is to take a good picture, capture a moment or feeling sometimes the equipment is between us and the picture. The author's premise seems to be by challenging ourselves we become more creative. An example might be Just one lens and you have to capture "the shot"in one attempt. I think it forces us to create , and to help us he has some basic rules he uses. Overall a great read I think in particular for people like myself that spent most of my professional life looking at numbers, statistics and uncertainty . I think for like people it will make me better at the art of photography vs the science or technology of it. So, away with the Nikon 7000 hello iPhone 4S

Chilvers has for you in "A Lesser Photographer". The term Lesser derives from those who would so title you if you don't have a bag of expensive gear. Mr. Chilvers could have easily entitled it, A liberated photographer. This short but well crafted book will give you the freedom or permission to take whatever humble tools you have and think about the images you are making and not whether you have this or that piece of gear.Refreshing is the fact that he doesn't drone on but gives simple clear ideas that lead to making an image. Headings like Constraints, Go Amateur, and Be Grateful take you through the process of how to spend for the image, not the latest hot piece of kit. Pay to get yourself and your camera in interesting locations, or take a course that will improve your ability to see the images around you will add much more value than megapixels.I started down this path several years ago, shooting with my cell phone (and still do) or a compact point and shoot. I was happy to find this little book and found myself nodding in agreement with the simple concepts put forth. If you want to get of the gear bandwagon, buy this book.
