It has many ways to prepare lentils including in stews, with meat, with vegetables, as a stuffing and in casseroles. I like the fact that there are several vegetarian options. I can't wait to try several recipes from this book like the exotic lentil dip, the citrus chicken and lentil skillet, the green chili lentil casserole and the lentil and bulgur stuffed pepper. All looks so delicious. Highly recommended for all lentil lovers.

I am like most people who think it will be easy to figure everything out without reading the instructions. Though, in the case of the Echo, even the instructions really don't give you the full picture like this book does. It covers all the ins and outs of what you will need to know in order get the full use out of the Echo. If you want to figure out how to get the max use out of the Echo and don't want to wait years, this is the book you need to buy!

Yes, you drink beer. Yes, you love beer. But how much do you really know about beer? For the sake of argument, let's suppose that you possess a fair amount of beer knowledge. Just enough to speak with some authority on the subject. Fermentation? Check. You pretty much got that covered. The difference between a stout and an IPA? Check. You know what you like and what to order when you're out on the town, and you can probably even opine on the choices of the other members of your party. And, hey, wasn't it the ancient Egyptians who first got the keg rolling, mass-production-wise? Well, not really, but you are in the ballpark.

Okay, since you're doing so well, how about we ratchet the difficulty level up a notch or three?

What can you tell your friends about how different types of yeast impact the overall flavor and quality of a given beer? Did you know that beer brewing has been around for some 10,000 years (give or take), and that the practice predates written language? And then there is the whole wide world of hops. Before people started adding hops to beer, the stuff was called ale. Do you know when (generally speaking) hops arrived on the scene? Or why hops were added in the first place? (Here's a hint: It had nothing to do with flavor.) Oh, and if for some reason you were asked, could you state, with confidence, the dollar value of the global brewing industry? (Another hint: It's very close to oodles.)

The point here is this: There is a whole barrel-aged ocean of information about beer out there; scientific, commercial, historical, sociological. Beer for the GENIUS houses all of the most important bits in one fascinating, sociable, somewhat daffy, yet easy-to-use compendium.

By the time you are done reading Beer for the GENIUS, you will be able to wow your friends and family (or annoy them, whichever) with your startling beer know-how.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I love beer. I love history By William L. Salyers I love beer. I love history. I love science. I love humor. This is the first book I've ever read that combined all of those elements. Richard English has a gift for sardonic turns of phrase, and his research is excellent. While "Beer for the Genius" is packed with facts, it never seems to bog down under their weight. It's almost as if you're sitting at the bar, next to your favorite erudite drunk, getting a fun and fact-filled lesson on the sudsy stuff, while you guzzle down two or six. Highly recommended.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not what I expected. By John Orr I left my beer-drinking days behind long ago, so I was a bit, let's say 'dubious' when I received this book as a gift. But I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The author has an impressive body knowledge, spanning art, culture, and the human spirit. Mr. English presents the subject matter in a manner that is approachable, erudite, and wickedly funny. The book is immediately engaging, without being either assuming or condescending. Amply and cleverly illustrated (kudos to Krumpholz), 'Beer for the Genius' will not only give you Boss-level powers in beer trivia, it might just give you insight into the human condition.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. First round's on Me! By Sean Pratt I won't lie...I went to school with Rich, back in the day. He was just as clever, intelligent, and funny then, as he is in this just released, must have book. Read it for the humor, peruse it for the information, study it for it's beer making prowess, but most of all enjoy the damn thing...because it's meant to be enjoyed! Bottom's up!

Finalist, 2012 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction Carla Trujillo brings to life another side of the fabled city of Santa Fe in this rollicking novel set in Dogtown, a dilapidated neighborhood on the outskirts of town. Home to a hardscrabble community of working people struggling to make a living on meager means, Dogtown is worlds apart from the tourists, artists, and upscale eateries just a stone’s throw away. The close-knit neighborhood thrives in its own way, until an entrepreneur arrives with a plan to cast out its occupants and construct a winery in its place.

Led by Dogtown’s unofficial mayor, Pepa Romero—an irreverent healer with old-world wisdom and new-age knowledge—the citizens of Dogtown revolt. Using everything at their disposal, including spying, supernatural powers, the law, and individual cunning, they set in motion a thrilling and at times hilarious chain of events that culminates in a storm of epic proportions. With an unforgettable cast of characters, Faith and Fat Chances illuminates the ingenuity and resilience of people fighting to preserve their way of life.

Review "Carla Trujillo writes with corazon about everyday people for everyday people. Her work is savvy, tough, and laugh-out-loud funny. This is the voice of the new millennium."--Sandra Cisneros“In Faith and Fat Chances, Carla Trujillo delivers a delightful but thoughtful meditation on eminent domain and atomic experiments and the communities that struggle against them with planning meetings, lawyers, news media and, of course, magic. Pepa, Dogtown’s irreverent elder and healer, is simply unforgettable!”—Helena María Viramontes, author of Their Dogs Came with Them"A humorously enchanting story about the inevitable forces of change on a small, hardscrabble community situated on the marginalized edges of Santa Fe …  Trujillo’s voice is at once tender and true, epic and poetic. She seamlessly weaves together the essential elements of great storytelling—a timeless location and unforgettable characters forced into increasingly complex situations."----Ellery Washington, Associate Professor, Pratt Institute

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A sweet little gem of a book By Lori H I took this book along on a recent business trip to pass the time on the long flights I had to endure to get where I was going. The book turned out to be a very enjoyable read complete with: entertaining and interesting characters, a great plot that included unexpected twists and turns, and also a more sober side touching on family dynamics, socioeconomic inequality and a dash of spirituality. While the theme of the book is serious—longtime residents in a very poor part of Santa Fe just trying to keep what they have against the onslaught of “progress” —the story is told in a humorous and sweet way. The characters are memorable and likable with all their quirks and you do find yourself rooting for them. When you’re in the mood for some fiction that you won’t want to put down until you’re done, I highly recommend this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. funny, focused By Lucy Jane Bledsoe FAITH AND FAT CHANCES is that rare novel with both humor and teeth. These characters are fierce, funny, focused, and working together in their community to stop developers from destroying their beloved neighborhood. I love reading novels where the characters are actually doing something meaningful outside of their relationships with one another and inside their relationships with one another. Wonderful read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended By Edith Ng Unforgettable characters, memorable one-liners, engaging story--a great read. I enjoyed the humor amongst the seriousness, the authenticity of the various voices, especially with the Spanish words intermixed, and the chance to reflect on the themes of greed, family and community. Santa Fe is a magical place and the author did a great job of transporting me there.

From a Caribbean island and the pursuit of a legendary boa constrictor, to the Belizean jungle and a fixation on the demise of the Maya civilization, to the Gulf of Honduras and a journey into ancestor worship, these tropical stories blend and explore history, religion, mythology, travel, mystery, illness, the nature of man, the nature of the beast, obsession, and the lure of discovery. In Dog-Head, a rejected man on an island holiday sets out to capture a large snake despite his lack of experience or the fear the legendary reptile inspires in the local people. In Remnants, a young couple on a Central American diving trip encounters a charismatic stranger whose intense obsession with the Maya civilization drives a wedge between them. In Moho Bight, an injured American fisherman in Belize, grappling with a new state of mind, becomes involved with a local woman whose mysterious illness leads him to a remote village and into the tribal rituals of the Garifuna culture. In each of these three fictions, travel and obsession mix into new forms that propel and endanger those susceptible to the lure of the exotic and the unknown, taking the reader with them into uncharted territory.

DOG-HEAD: Tales from the Neotropics, by Michael Jarvis

Review "Exotic adventures in myth and obsession in: Dog-Head: Tales from theNeotropics" - IndieReader 3/4/16This is an extraordinary collection of three novellas all centered on themesof obsession, myth, and exoticism. They are each mesmerizing, beautifully written, and wholly immersive, presenting the reader with intimate glimpses oflittle-seen worlds.Locations are left relatively vague, as the stories are more often told fromthe point of view of the white outsider; the author is aware of the ways atourist's expectations of savage jungles and down-to-earth natives can colorlived experiences, but his locals are just as aware of this exchange, whichleads to excellent tension. The stories build their worlds slowly and then snapthe reader out of reverie with quick plot changes and dramatic conclusions.IR Verdict: Dog-Head: Talesfrom the Neotropics is a striking and viscerally immersive exploration ofisland culture and white tourism, man's obsession with conquering nature, andthe power of mythology.

About the Author Michael Jarvis is the author of the novel, Field of Vision. He lives in Miami, Florida, scouting locations for various film projects and writing fiction. He keeps a valid passport, a pen and a camera, and travels whenever the need arises.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend it to readers By Amazon Customer Dog Head is a collection of three short stories taking place in the tropics. The book is powerful and compelling, and it talks to our dreams and fears. The stories have some basic elements in common: a young american tourist (different in each story) is influenced by the different environment and nature, and he develops a new wilder streak that makes him follow some inner obsession. The description of the jungle and in general of the environment where the action takes place is very rich and compelling. The characters, mostly described through their actions, feel alive and real. I have been reading this book mostly at night after work, and every day I could not wait to go back to it and to its exotic environment. I highly recommend it to readers.

Wolf Jarvis befuddles us with his brilliant navigation of the tropics and it's extended geography not to mention philosophies of the regions. Readers in our household range from young 20's up to the later 80's. Something for everyone in his work. He is a silent storyteller who's thoughts are only revealed on the page and pages to follow. Having read Field of Vision, we had to embark on this new tale. You won't be disappointed. Open your mind to a visual treat!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A literary gem By Willa Wharton Michael Jarvis' writing is characterized by poetic language and an emotional power that kept me mesmerized from start to finish. The stories are so provocative and disturbing and rich in detail that I felt I was at ground level at all times, right along with the characters. It's not often that a compulsive reader like myself--always hungry for good literary fiction--has the pleasure of discovering such a uniquely gifted writer.

PDF Ebook Online ROCK STARS OF WINE AMERICA #2: AZ w/ MJK: I Could Drink a Case of You, by Stuart Pigott

The story of my discovery of singer-winemaker Maynard James Keenan (Puscifer and Tool / Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards) and other leading winemakers in Arizona like Todd & Kelly Bostock, Kent & Lisa Callaghan is seriously racy, but also tortuously twisting. Please note that the PARENTAL ADVISORY Explicit Content warning on the cover is not a pose. This outrageous work of Gonzo journalism is not suitable for minors due to the graphic and poetic description of sexual acts and certain illegal activities. You have been warned! Without giving the game away, this e-pamphlet tells the rock 'n' roll story of the year ending November 17th 2015 with the Puscifer gig of the group's Money Shot tour. During that time I travelled through the wine regions of AZ twice, and also met with MJK in New York City. Although this work is packed with facts about the AZ wine industry and my professional assessment of many AZ wines, this is a very personal story that pulls no punches. If you want a regular wine book please go somewhere else! However, if you are up for an off-road rock music and wine adventure, then take Hunter S. Thompson's advice, "buy the ticket, take the trip." Enough said, except to point out that #3 in this series of dangerous tales about the underground rock stars of wine America will cover the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York and publication on Kindle is planned for Spring, 2016. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. "This means he is a follower of writers like Tom Wolfe and Hunter S By AnInterestedReader Pigott describes himself as a "gonzo journalist."This means he is a follower of writers like Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson who re-defined "non-fiction" in the 1970's by including themselves as characters in the stories they told.Pigott's story is about wine-making (and he has the credentials to do that topic justice). But just as Hunter Thompson did not just write about politicians and Tom Wolfe did not just write about astronauts, Pigott is not just writing about wine. He is writing about what makes people tick, and that includes Maynard James Keenan and the other odds-defying people making wine among a few fertile pockets in the Arizona desert.Pigott is also a European, having been born in England but also having spent many years in Germany. He brings the eyes and ears of an outsider to America, and that, too, is part of why we should pay attention to what he says about Americans. Just as we paid attention to what de Tocqueville and Dickens wrote about Americans.Gonzo journalism works when the writer; 1) possesses a depth of understanding about the subject; 2) knows where to draw the line between the "writer-as-subject" and the "subject-as-subject"; and 3) is likeable, entertaining and, in this case, not afraid to make fun of himself. Pigott checks all these boxes. You do not have to enjoy wine (or wine writing) to enjoy this book. It is as much about American culture as it is about whether or not it makes sense to plant Syrah in the Sonoran desert.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Jane Blond International Spy By Lauren Jones I was provided with a copy of Jane Blond International Spy in exchange for an honest review. This mystery is phenomenal! In the beginning, Jane is a normal teenager in high school—except for the fact that her father is in a secure facility for a crime that she believes he did not commit. She has a best friend named Anouk and she lives with her mother and Vladimir—the Russian boyfriend who her father would testify against in a heartbeat. Jane is confused and making her own assumptions as far as who to trust and who she should be leery of. Her Uncle Bill helps her with fundamental defense skills, like how to shoot a gun and pick a lock. Jane swears up and down that he must have been some type of spy—but he has never told her anything about his career. Going over to her partner’s house to assist with a project for school, Jane finds out that his father has been hospitalized because doctors found cancer. A mysterious radioactivity gadget brings some FBI agents right up to Jane’s door and Jane quickly finds herself needing to solve a mystery. Will she be able to find the truth about a terrorist organization in Washington D.C. or will it find her?My favorite characters are Jane, Gertrude, Jeff, Vladimir and Uncle Bill. Jane is so confident and truly so amazing, especially after reading about how she doesn’t find herself to be of interest to the prestigious school that no one can afford other than the rich. During her personal investigation, she discovers several things about the case at hand—but I loved how she found a lot about herself and challenges that she was willing to take even when her life was at stake. It is very admirable! Gertrude is the parrot that Jane doesn’t really have any affection for, but she does acknowledge that the bird is very smart and can respect that. She knows that she may just need the bird’s help one day, so stuffing it with crackers is the best option to stay on her good side. Jeff has his own part to play, but I love the friendship that Jane has with him, even though it is not as open since he has Asperger’s Syndrome. Jane’s compassion for Jeff and his differences have never deterred her from showing kindness to Jeff and I really enjoyed reading about their special way of understanding each other. Vladimir is a mystery throughout almost the entire read and I loved it! I tried to figure out every angle, but I was actually wrong about my original hypothesis. Uncle Bill is the last of my favorites. He is very secretive, but affectionate and I saw that he really cared for Jane and his brother, enough to really talk to her about the truth of certain aspects in her life that provided her with confusion. In my opinion I rate Jane Blond International Spy with five stars because I thoroughly enjoyed it enough to read in one day! These characters are developed and the story is original with loads of creativity! The pace is nice and fast, but not obscenely so. I actually found a wonderful rhythm and kept on trucking through the chapters with excitement. I would highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys young adult mystery and suspense. It is a wonderful read and I look forward to reading more by these incredible authors!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. YA mystery By Jo-Anne B. Please note I received a complementary copy of this book from Inspired Kathy in exchange for an honest review. I'm rating it 3.5 stars rounding up to 4 stars.Jane Blond goes to school at Broxton which is for either the very wealthy or very intelligent who get scholarships. Jane's father pre-paid her tuition before he was sent to prison for a white collar crime. Now Jane and her mother are living with Vladamir who is a very wealthy Russian. Jane doesn't like or dislike him but doesn't want him replacing her father.Jane has all sorts of problems but handles everything calmly. Her best friend, Anouk, is having trouble at home so Jane tries to help her out as much as she can. Some rich Uzbekistanian students harass her daily. She also has a talking parrot that repeats everything it hears. When it repeated what some men said who broke into Jane's house looking for a memory stick with important data on it, the FBI were able to track them down. Then a boy she likes gets kidnapped so being an International Spy, Jane sets out to rescue him. As spies do, she uncovered a terrorist plot to kill the American President making her a hero. This is a nice suspenseful adventure with great characters. Jane is an extremely capable 14 year old who cares deeply for her friends and family. She is not typical for a girl her age but more like a super-hero. Jane is very brave and courageous making her a good influence for young teens. In general, Jane Blond International Spy isn't realistic or believable but a fun read. That's what fiction is for - to escape into a world that is fun to visit but wouldn't want to live there. This book is great for YA readers who likes mysteries.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful, quick read for young teen girls By becki (free copy for honest review)This is a great story for young teen girls or YA who aren't looking for all the romance. (Wait, what? There are girls out there like that?! Pfffff!)Jane Blond. Yeah, she's heard all the jokes. Big deal. She's more worried about making the cheerleading team, coping with her mom's boyfriend and sneaking to visit her dad in prison. But maybe there's something to her name when she starts dealing with the FBI regarding some strange things happening around town.I was impressed when I learned Jane Blond was written by a high schooler. It's a short, fun read with an intriguing plot. It's sophisticated enough to not be predictable.I love how Schott uses unconventional characters that help Jane solve the case. No super cute, nice, outgoing hunk to help Jane along. Nope, it's mostly a solo operation with a nudge here and there from a friend.Overall, a wonderful jump up for middle schoolers who want a little more in their mysteries.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Dissapointing By B. Thigpin Given that there is little information available on Muay Boran in any format, I decided to give this book a try. From the product description it sounded interesting at least, but after reading through it I was extremely dissapointed. The format reads more like a series of articles thrown together than a cohesive work. The translation to English is so poor that it makes it almost unreadable. I've never heard elbows referred to as "pokes" or hands referred to as "beaters." Or to paraphrase "to become master in thai art martial required of diligent practices." The whole book is written like that or worse. The pictures at times have no correlation with each other or are cut off halfway on the page, and there is no information on stances, footwork, or actual instructions on how to perform any of the techniques. Apparently the author thinks wearing shorts with "Muay Thai Boran" and wrapping his hands in rope make up for that. Like the review for De Cesaris's other Muay Boran book mentioned, he spends too much time talking about what a savior to the Thai martial arts he is. Funny I can't find any legitimate sources for all the titles he supposedly holds. There is nothing "advanced" about the techniques in this book, and nothing you wouldn't learn after several months of training at a Thai gym. Also, the book states it contains information on the Thai military art of Lerd Rit. Well, it does: A whopping half paragraph of writing and three pages of photos. If you are really interested in Muay Thai I would instead recommend Muay Thai Unleashed By Eric Krauss or Ultimate Muay Thai by Bob Spour. Solid fundamentals are what you build off of, and the techniques shown in those books are consistent with what is actually taught in Thailand. If you are still interested in Muay Boran, look for an ebook called "Muay Thai: The Art of Fighting." While the translation is poor, the pictures are clear and show basically every Muay Boran technique that is known. In short don't waste your money or your time on this book.

The explosive growth of the local food movement is hardly news: Michael Pollan’s books sell millions and the spread of farm-to-table restaurants is practically viral. But calls for a “food revolution” come most often from a region where the temperature rarely varies more than a few degrees. In the national conversation about developing a sustainable and equitable food tradition, the huge portion of our population who live where the soil freezes hard for months of the year feel like they're left out in the cold.In Winter’s Kitchen reveals how a food movement with deep roots in the Heartland—our first food co-ops, most productive farmland, and the most storied agricultural scientists hail from the region—isn't only thriving, it's presenting solutions that could feed a country, rather than just a smattering of neighborhoods and restaurants. Using the story of one thanksgiving meal, Dooley discovers that a locally-sourced winter diet is more than a possibility: it can be delicious.

In Winter's Kitchen, by Beth Dooley

Review Praise for In Winter's Kitchen"Dooley does much more than recycle familiar arguments for eating local; she personalizes the path from farm to fork with heart and skill. Unapologetically sentimental, deeply informative, and always practical . . . In Winter’s Kitchen is essential reading."—Wall Street Journal"Through her passionate yet straightforward and enticingly simple prose, Dooley invites us to share in her bounty. Like any good book about food, In Winter’s Kitchen inspires us to cook."—Kansas City Star"In this homage to local food, Dooley paints an exquisite portrait. Each of Dooley’s 12 chapters showcases a different local food such as apples, wheat, chestnuts, cranberries, corn, wild rice, and sweet potatoes. The author includes a few recipes but explains that this is not a cookbook; rather, it is the story of the author building relationships with the 'small, independent farmers, processors, and chefs' who make their living building and contributing to local economies throughout the Upper Midwest.”—Publishers Weekly"Beth Dooley has written the book we need, a collection of stories about the foods we eat in winter, the season that is so often ignored, as if it doesn’t count somehow, or even exist. Part memoir and part serious food study with beguiling but essential recipes, a wonderful work!"—Deborah Madison"That Beth Dooley is a dynamite cook and journalist is a given in my book. She’s the expert who is deep in the trenches with the farmers, the artisans, hunters and the gatherers, and every important dimension of food today. With this book you get outstanding recipes and get Beth sharing her stories, people, and insights."—Lynne Rossetto Kasper"Beth Dooley’s In Winter's Kitchen is a reflection on the way that we become at home in the world, by coming into deep relationship with our food, our farmers, our family, and the land. Each chapter celebrates the relationship between land and culture, from Anishinaabek wild rice to Hmong sweet potatoes. Her warm prose invites you to the kitchen table and reminds you of what we’re all really hungry for: connection. I wanted to linger with the lush images, ripe with memory and mothering."—Robin Wall Kimmerer"Beth Dooley creates culture in the kitchen, connecting readers, farmers, and food in the soup pot of biological diversity. Knowing where we are by the food we eat was the reality of the past and is the trend of the future. In Winter’s Kitchen is a fascinating read; cultivating the knowledge we need to make diverse, local food a reliable reality—the most crucial task of our time. Read this book, and pay attention as if life depends on the truth it contains. It does."—Atina Diffley

About the Author Beth Dooley has been involved with the local food movement for over twenty years. She is the author of numerous award-winning cookbooks about Heartland food traditions and her travel and food writing has been featured in the Star Tribune, Fine Cooking, Delta Sky Magazine, and the North American Review. Beth and her husband have three sons and live in Minneapolis, MN.

Food and Cookery for the Sick and Convalescent, by Fannie Merritt Farmer

About the Author Fannie Merritt Farmer (1857-1915) was an American authority on cookery, born in Boston. She received her early education in Medford, Massachusetts, and graduated from the Boston Cooking School, of which she was a director from 1892 to 1902. In the latter year she founded Miss Farmer's School of Cookery, Boston, with the purpose of instructing housewives and nurses in the art of cookery, rather than training prospective domestic science teachers. She edited The Boston Cooking School Cook Book (1896); 21 editions were published before her death. Out of this grew the Fannie Farmer Cookbook, still being published.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. practical and very useful By Edane I own the 1912 edition of this book and recommend it highly, in any edition, for anyone's cookery shelf. It can sit there quietly until you need to care for someone who is sick at home, then it becomes a gold mine of useful recipes and advice. I would also recommend Florence Nightingale, Notes on Nursing, for other practical sick care advice, A Soothing Broth, by Pat Willard, and the 1951 Red Cross Home Nursing book for its 'to the point' sensible advice and quaint but very useful illustrations. Newer editions of the Red Cross book are ok but the 1951 ed is my favorite for practical simple advice. Buy the Fannie Farmer book. Someday, when someone is ill, you'll be glad you have it. :-)

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist follows an embattled Little League team in inner-city Newark, New Jersey, revealing the complex realities of urban life in one of America's most dangerous citiesWhen Rodney Mason, an ex-con drug dealer from Newark's rough South Ward, was shot and paralyzed, he vowed to turn his life around. A former high-school pitching ace with a 93 mph fastball, Mason decided to form a Little League team to help boys avoid the street life that had claimed his youth and mobility. Predictably, the players struggle—they endure poverty, unstable family lives with few positive male role models, failing schools, and dangerous neighborhoods—but through the fists and tears, lopsided losses and rare victories, this bunch of misfits becomes a team, and in doing so gives the community something to root for. With in-depth reporting, fascinating characters, and vivid prose, Jonathan Schuppe's A Chance to Win is both a penetrating, true-to-life portrait of what's at stake for kids growing up poor in America's inner cities and a portrait of Newark itself, a struggling city that has recently known great hope as well as failure.

A Chance to Win: Boyhood, Baseball, and the Struggle for Redemption in the Inner City, by Jonathan Schuppe

From Booklist *Starred Review* We’re all familiar with the rags-to-riches lives of famous celebrities who overcame poverty-drugs-abuse to become household names. Schuppe, a Pulitzer Prize winner, explores the far more frequent rags-to-rags scenario, focusing on a few people involved in the life of Rodney Mason of Newark, New Jersey. Mason was, at times, a high-school baseball star, gang member, dope dealer, and all-around badass. But after he was shot in a dispute over a woman and confined to a wheelchair, he decided to try to help kids avoid the gang life by getting them interested in baseball. Against all odds and surmounting crushing obstacles, he did just that. In addition to telling Mason’s story, Schuppe examines the lives of the kids Mason tries to help. One has virtually no place to live. Dad’s in prison, Mom is often ineffectual, so he moves from cousin to sister to grandma and back again, changing schools each time. Keep pressing on? Pass on the easy money available on the street? Kids do it, but, as Schuppe points out, it is so damn hard. That’s the takeaway here. There is poverty defined by an absence of money, but the real poverty may be the absence of opportunity. Yes, it may be peculiar to describe a book that looks unflinchingly at urban poverty as wonderful, but in the sense that this account will open eyes and maybe a few minds, wonderful just might apply. --Wes Lukowsky

Review

“[A] deep excavation . . . told with consummate empathy.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“A compelling book.” ―The Washington Post

“Honest and gritty.” ―Newark Star Ledger

“[A Chance to Win] reads like a mix between Friday Night Lights by Buzz Bissinger and Random Family by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc -- tough acts that Schuppe gracefully follows.” ―Bookriot.com

“A lively work of literary nonfiction [that] vividly illustrates the often fierce struggles of a small group of people [and] offers a larger truth about the city. . . Jonathan Schuppe gives dignified, poetic voice to [Newark's] struggle.” ―Inside Jersey

“It may be peculiar to describe a book that looks unflinchingly at urban poverty as wonderful, but in the sense that this account will open eyes and maybe a few minds, wonderful just might apply.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“A compelling portrait of inner-city struggles . . . Schuppe's punchy journalistic style serves the material well.” ―Kirkus

“This is one of the most powerful books of narrative non-fiction I've read in years. Schuppe has assembled an unremarkable and yet unforgettable cast -- led by a paralyzed ex-con-cum-little-league-coach -- and told their story with clear-eyed compassion and grace. The result is somehow both understated and majestic.” ―Jonathan Mahler, author of Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx is Burning

“Sobering yet inspiring, Jonathan Schuppe's A Chance to Win is one terrific read, an extraordinary journey with a cast of characters who will stay with you. I found myself on the edge of my seat rooting for Rodney Mason and his young protégés, and ruminating on what it really means to find redemption.” ―Alex Kotlowitz, There Are No Children Here

“A man with no legs teaches the forgotten children of Newark how to run for glory. Amazing, and all true. Jon Schuppe has written an extraordinary book of the human spirit. This powerful narrative--brilliantly reported and passionately rendered--is a true journey of the heart. The aching heart, in fact, of a still-great nation, revealed by those left behind, who still--somehow--find a way to believe in America's promise.” ―Ron Suskind, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of A Hope in the Unseen, An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League

“A Chance to Win is a model of intimate reporting, an exemplar of lucid prose, and a demonstration of genuine courage. It will take most readers into a world that they do not know, and they will be rewarded for the venture.” ―Daniel Okrent, author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition

“A Chance to Win will take its rightful place as a classic of American urban life. Through superb reporting and compelling empathy, it makes us care passionately about the characters and their struggles. The story is by turns sad, inspiring, disturbing, hopeful and all true.” ―Jonathan Alter, author of The Promise

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Baseball Is Their Chance to Win By Sam Sattler Much to the chagrin of Major League Baseball and baseball coaches at every level, the sport has pretty much been abandoned by the black youth of America's inner cities. This is not a new problem, and Major League executives have thrown a lot of money at the problem in recent years by building youth ballparks and providing equipment to teams willing to give the sport a shot. But, as Jonathan Schuppe points out in A Chance to Win, largely due to peer pressure, black kids are still reluctant to take up the game. They consider it a "white" sport and by huge margins give their attention to basketball and football instead. Schuppe points out, too, that baseball is a sport whose skills are most often passed on directly from father to son. This is a huge handicap in an environment in which fathers are, more often than not, not living in the same home as their children - and are unlikely to have learned the game from their own fathers, in the first place.Rodney Mason, a Newark kid now in his forties, knew early on that he was good at baseball. He was a prized pitcher on his high school team, and had the potential to parley his baseball skills into a bright future for himself. Unfortunately, Rodney was also pretty good at dealing drugs from a local street corner - but, as Rodney would eventually learn, a "pretty good" drug dealer does not stay out of trouble forever.Although Rodney's drug dealing always did have the potential for getting him killed, his undoing actually came at the hands of a rival who targeted Rodney for a drive-by shooting because of their dispute over a woman. Rodney survived the shooting but woke up paralyzed from the waist down. His baseball-playing days might have been over - but Rodney was soon back out on the street dealing drugs from his wheelchair. Then, when the city of Newark decided to clean up the old ball field across the street from Rodney's apartment, he decided to get involved. He hoped that baseball, the only thing he was ever exceptional at in his life, could save him before it was too late. He hoped to use baseball to save a few of the neighborhood kids from the street life that had crippled him - and in the process to turn his own life around. But it would not be easy - and A Chance to Win explains why.Over the course of a couple of seasons, the book closely follows "Coach Rock," two of his better players, and the father of two other players as they struggle mightily to turn their hopes into reality. For all of them, it turns out to be a case of "two steps forward and one step back." Life might be stacked against the Newark Eagles, but baseball gives them a chance to make the most of their potential rather than simply succumbing to the city's street life. Theirs is a touching story with a message of hope. Baseball is their "chance to win."

By michelle ryang I know nothing about baseball, sports or Newark and I found this book totally engrossing, interesting and thoughtfully written. This is the type of book that you stay up late reading "just one more chapter" because you can't wait to read what happens next. It's painful and real and I highly recommend this to everyone! This book nicely ties together all the different stories of the boys, men and city of Newark that is totally relevant today and you can't help wondering how it all ends throughout the book. This is honest reporting at it's best and really inspires you to examine your own life and those around you!Read this book!

Monthan There are at least two key measures of a great book for me: One, I can't stop reading it; and two, I don't want to finish it because I don't want to leave the world and the people it has made real for me. This book meets both measures in abundance, and so much more. This is not just a sports book, though it centers on a ragtag team of inner-city Little League players; it's not just a book about urban blight, though it is rich with backstory and sidebars into Newark's history and politics. It's a compelling human story about people bucking odds that have been stacked against them from birth -- as well as struggling with their own mistakes and shortcomings as they try, sometimes over and over, to do the right thing. Schuppe doesn't cast a Disney glow over anyone; this story is gritty and real and often heartbreaking. The book's honesty, for me, points to something easy to lose sight of in our culture's demand for easy answers, tidy romantic endings, and flawless heroes: There are none. But that shouldn't stop us from doing what we can. The triumph of the human spirit depicted here is often messy and imperfect but no less uplifting for that. I felt I'd been changed myself by witnessing, through Schuppe's eyes, the network of children and parents whose lives intersect through ex-con Rodney Mason and his simple desire to make a positive contribution by starting a Little League team. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's an utterly engrossing and important work of journalism.
