Lonely arts: A distinct eye for alienation   Edward Hopper (1882–1967) is something of an American success story, if only his success had come swifter. At the age of 40, he was a failing artist who struggled to sell a single painting. As he approached 80, Time magazine featured him on its cover. Today, half a century after his death, Hopper is considered a giant of modern expression, with an uncanny, unforgettable, and utterly distinct sense for mood and place.Much of Hopper's work excavates modern city experience. In canvas after canvas, he depicts diners, cafes, shopfronts, street lights, gas stations, rail stations, and hotel rooms. The scenes are marked by vivid color juxtapositions and stark, theatrical lighting, as well as by harshly contoured figures, who appear at once part of, and alien to, their surroundings. The ambiance throughout his repertoire is of an eerie disquiet, alienation, loneliness and psychological tension, although his rural or coastal scenes can offer a counterpoint of tranquility or optimism. This book presents key works from Hopper's œuvre to introduce a key player not only in American art history but also in the American psyche.   About the Series:Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Art series features:

  • a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance
  • a concise biography
  • approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

The collection of reproductions is good, both in terms of the amount of them, as well as their quality. Certainly it's nothing overly-impressive, but it is a fine collection. The problem lies more in the commentary. Renner spends a great deal of time on "re-codings" in Hooper's work, leading to many...interesting conclusions. As one reads along, one gets the impression that Hooper himself didn't have a great deal to say (espeically compared to artists, like Dali, who can't shut up), so Renner instead fills the space with what lamentably passes for art criticism these days (mostly of the postmodern and psychologizing variety). I wasn't terribly impressed.Everything considered, you would be better served by another Hooper book from Taschen, this one written by Ivo Kranzfelder. Kranzfelder takes much greater care to deal with the little amount Hopper said, and (while the current style does occur to an extent) the commentary tends to be much more lucid as regards Hopper's works. Additionally, that volume has a much larger and better variety of Hopper's works than Renner's.That being said, if one cannot get a hold on Kranzfelder's book, or does not want to spend the extra money for it, Renner's work is acceptable. The commentary isn't swell, but it is still passable.

Decent pictures, awful text By Roter Schlumpf This is a complete & thorough review of Hopper's work, that is horribly written (I assume poorly translated from the original German). The text is so awkward and clumsy that I often had to re-read paragraphs 3 or 4 times before even beginning to have an idea of what the author was trying to convey. I battled my way through the introduction (several times), then gave up and merely skimmed the remaining text.A further, critical flaw is that the author's analysis is often flimsy and tendentious. At least once (I can't claim more as I didn't read the book thoroughly), Mr. Renner first formed a theory and then sought ways to support it, even fabricating evidence. For example, stating that the woman's dress in 'South Caroline Morning' is "nearly see-through." Not even remotely. The take-home message is this: if you purchase the book, do so only for the pictures.

I had this book in smaller soft cover and I wanted to get the hard cover for my coffee table collection. Well, it turns out that my sister who just bought a house was looking for some good hard cover books for her book shelf so poof! All my coffee table collection is gone. The good thing is that when I am visiting her, I can always enjoy it there. Meanwhile I have my soft cover and it is wonderful. All in this series are great books to collect.
