1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Work for Its Time By ernest schusky Wissler published the work about 1920, and no changes to the book have been made since. The work was a breaktrhrough in our knowledge of Plains Indians at the time, but the work is dated. The author was a curator of anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History so the book is solid on material culture (suited for museums); indeed Wissler has inspired students of Indian art with his research on bead designs.An important contribution of the book was the development of the culture area concept. Whereas museums once might try to display materials on different tribes within a culture area, Wissler realized that the similarities among the tribes were more important and all of them could be represented by one exhibit, with explanation of culture areas.The book remains a good reference source for anyone interested in Plains Indians and for the historian of anthropology.ernestschusky.com
