Barbara Pyle’s intimate behind the scenes photographs from 1975 and the recording, rehearsing and touring of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's Born to Run have been eagerly awaited for 40 years and are finally being published for the first time. “I first saw Bruce and the E Street Band by accident," she writes, "I was blown away by their music. For the next year, I drove to as many of their gigs as I could reach. They jokingly started calling me their 'official unofficial photographer.' I was just expected to be there, and I almost always was―on my self-imposed mission to document this little known New Jersey band ... I had the remarkable good fortune to spend most of the last Born to Run months in the studio with Bruce and the band. I became sort of a living 'good luck' charm and was asked to be there many nights. I knew I was witnessing history in the making.” Pyle captured Springsteen and the Band as they were catapulted to stardom. She is also the only photographer who has ever been given access inside the recording studio while Springsteen was working. “Photographing Bruce and the Band on their ascent to superstardom was a hobby; but after being given such access, it became a mission.” This stunning and intimate tome also marks the 40th anniversary of Born to Run.

Review Justly, her book does not focus solely on Springsteen, as many photo essays do... in the new "1975," Clemons, Bittan, Steven Van Zandt, Garry Tallent, Max Weinberg and Danny Federici are all prominently featured, in New York, New Orleans, Pyle's hometown of Paul's Valley, Okla., and more. (Bobby Olivier NJ.com, August 20. 2015)In style, Pyle's gritty, grainy, black-and-white images are pure Street Photography: realistic, urban snapshots with a debt to 1950s pioneers like Walker Evans, Helen Levitt, Roy De Carava, and Robert Frank. (Carol Strickland The Christian Science Monitor, December 8, 2015)Barbara Pyle's amazing images captured singer, E Street Band just as they were about to explode. (Andy Greene Rolling Stone)The images...reflect the palpable tension of a band in a make-or-break moment. (Eliza Berman Time.Com)

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Ecstatic Fan! By Philip S (NYC) My copy arrived yesterday and I could not be happier. I am probably the world’s biggest Springsteen fan and have every book ever published on him, and this is by far my favorite one. I had never seen most of these photographs before and they take me back to the early glory days. They are so intimate and candid. Barbara Pyle captured some amazing moments. Thank you Amazon.

It's a classic of rock 'n roll photography, documenting the crucial pivot-point between tireless labor and "overnight" superstardom (after Born to Run was released 40 years ago). The gritty, grainy black-and-white images capture the realism of rehearsals and recording rather than the glamor of celebrity, a testament to hard work and perfectionism, as well as Springsteen's charisma and passion onstage.
