Forty-nine year-old Bryan Wakefield finds that as he approaches retirement he considers what life will be like once he is forced to abandon the daily means of escape that his job has provided from his tumultuous home life. Complicating matters, he possesses an extraordinary ability to recall specific events from any given date in his past with uncanny accuracy. It’s this very ability that causes him to dwell incorporeally in the doorway between past and present, comparing the dreams and reverie of youth to the despair of his adult life. One day, during his commute to work, Bryan misses his exit. But instead of getting off at the next, he continues driving, setting into motion events that will force him to strip away his desensitization by pitting past against present and breathe new life into his search for validity and meaningfulness. Set in California’s mythic Mayacamas Mountains, The Portraits of Gods tells the tale of lost love and one man’s struggle with the slow-acting poison of regret. “Author John Kingston captures the compulsion to remake yourself in this portrait of a man trapped in middle age and middle management who misses his freeway exit one morning and just keeps on driving. But hitting the road turns out to be the easy part in a story that details the drama of everyday life.” —Gordon Young, author of Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City

A story how we accept (or don't) life By JSloan In this story of regret and uncertainty, readers will question their allegiances to the traditions we are expected to keep versus our desires to enjoy life. The prose is outstanding, with sentences that pull us in and leave us satisfied. This is a story of a man who just keeps going down the road instead of to his office, and it leads to some enjoyable little adventures.

By Tom Lindsey Portrait of Gods takes you on the journey of a man who you will see with increasing complexity as the story develops. The main character, Bryan Wakefield, is one that most people could identify with many attributes of his personality and life situation. The story gets very interesting as he makes an unexpected set of decisions at a turning point in his life. Kingston's story brings you on this exciting adventure while exploring deeper psychological and philosophical struggles that many of us battle with. As the suspense intensified, I had trouble putting the book down, as curiosity about what was impending overpowered me. The story seems so real, while the language and wording is eloquent and sophisticated throughout the book. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to future books by John Kingston.
