In New Orleans, tragedy and comedy share a shotgun double. While sadness and hilarity are part of the fabric of everyday life in the Crescent City, their proximity was never so much in evidence as when Hurricane Katrina relocated the contents of Lake Pontchartrain to the sinking bowl just to the south. Pathos, death, and destruction aside, what could make a disaster of such unprecedented proportions more absurd than having George W. Bush as president of the United States or Ray Nagin as mayor of New Orleans? A paranoid-schizophrenic demanding popcorn at an aid station perhaps? Or Michael Brown preening in an Alabama hangar while being praised for his stellar job performance? Or Sean Penn in hot, amorous pursuit of Soledad O’Brien? Maybe an alcoholic Robert E. Lee impersonator at the mercy of a homicidal mob? Or maybe cops engaging in human target practice on the Danziger Bridge? The tale of Hurricane Katrina is one of magnificent failure and gigantically bad decisions made by multi-thumbed authorities who derived their disaster management expertise, apparently, from Looney Tunes. By satirizing the events and people that comprise this tragedy—this epic farce—often through simple verbatim accounts, the authors are shining a light in a very dark place that is now in danger of being permanently enshadowed by time and failing memory. Caine I'm a New Orleans native and experienced Katrina, although not at all like the several main characters in this book went through. I was lucky enough to be already out of town when Katrina hit. The characters in the book were there in the flooded city and tried to cope with their situation .as best they could in various ways. The natives are treated sympathetically; the Mayor of the city, President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Michael Brown of FEMA are treated as incompetents and fools, which they likely deserve for their miserable response to the storm's devastation. I found the book one of the best Katrina stories I have read. It is informative, interesting, intriguing and a pleasure all around. I wanted to know more of the story of these people. I recommend it. Disclaimer: I know one of the authors of the book, Frank Silvestri, went to school with him, but am impressed honestly with the story he helped write.

QUINN This novel enables readers to directly experience Katrina with its vivid characters repeatedly returning and somehow managing to survive the aftermath alongside its satirical portrayals of government officials who repeatedly failed these people. There is misery and loss and survival and humor which emerge in an almost dreamlike sequence of events beginning with a relevant hurricane years before and ending with parting shots of the major figures coming up for air, at last, in Houston. This is definitely a book worth reading.

By Stephanie Braunstein As another reviewer stated, the book treats the regular folks of New Orleans with sympathy but derides the politicos--both local and national--with gusto. To create sympathy for characters who might, in other circumstances, be considered losers and misfits, the authors emphasize the fragility of those characters through language that is as tough as it is forgiving--a hallmark of good satire. So, if you enjoy good satire and are also interested in details about Katrina which you may not have heard before, this novel is for you. I highly recommend it.
