By Zahid Hussain There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.- Hamlet (1.5.167-8), Hamlet to Horatio “I see you” Karishma Atari’s first Novel published by Penguin reminds me of that quote from Shakespeare. But then that is saying only part of what this novel is all about. It is essentially about its main protagonist Alia, whom we met first as a 17 year old girl at the airport, returning home, and has half a mind to right then to run away from it all. Such a level of despair in one young! But Alia develops from a being a victim, to a person who has not just taken charge of her life, but perhaps changed many destinies by the end of this book. Then the book is about the evil. Evil as in a spirit that haunts her, evil as in what she perceives her father to be, evil as in what she finds hurting her mother . The book brings in the slow seeping terror of the evil that will be unleashed in the night. As each day is a ‘day- dream’, removed from Alias’s reality, but she treats her days as the only hold she has on reality. Reminded me Brahms Stoker’s Dracula where the coming of the evening brought about the slow creeping terror of what the night might unfold. The book is about the language used. It is not the hard hammered- into- slots ‘word smithy’. The fluency and ease with the language makes it a smooth easy to read book. But if one succumbs to the pace of the story telling and the suspense of the story unfolding, one misses out some gems. Like Alia who finds her mother very beautiful and eerily enigmatic describing seeing her once like ‘My Mothers radiance in the sharp light of the winter afternoon cut through my surprise...’ It is rare to read some one describing this quality of light in the winter. Then there is this sentence by which one can just about see Alia, sitting there near her mother and drinking in every word and gesture from her. “‘Her voice hung on the edge of something, like a rolling coin about to tip “The books ending had me gripping at the side of my chair. And after I finished it, I begin to wonder, what will be the sequel to this be. What has Alia taken on? This is book to be read once, and then slowly re read.
