About the Author Huma Durrani is a Pakistani Singaporean, an art therapist by profession and the mother of three beautiful boys the eldest of whom has autism. Spurred by her sons condition and inspired by the power of images Huma pursued a career in Art therapy and currently works with children with special needs and psychoemotional issues. She decided to write a memoir of her journey with her son, which entailed huge challenges, emotional and psychological, in order to bring attention to the neglected area of special needs and mental illness. Her mission is to encourage openness, acceptance and advocacy of differences in individuals and the endorsement of a proactive approach towards dealing with mental health issues. This book made my weekend. In endearingly honest writing, the first-time author shares memories of her journey in acknowledging and subsequently raising a child with autism, and her own coming to terms with anxiety and depression.“Wrapped in Blue” documents an uplifting journey that is worth reading irrespective of whether you have a child with special needs. After all, all children are different and each child learns differently.It is a memoir she has written, perhaps, first for herself, in order to make sense of the unfolding events. But she has also revealed her determination and frailties, and the strength of her faith so that we can be more sensitive to a world of children with different strengths that often escapes our radar. The book has an easy pace, carries a factual tone and is touching without being overly sentimental.It is a fashionable in today’s wired world for some mums to overtly advertise, especially on social media, how their neuro-typical children are the reason of their “completeness”, never mind the real score. Gaining acceptance for a manufactured reality in the virtual world often appears to be a sought-after goal.In contrast, Huma lays bare her story in brutally honest terms. Relative to the challenges faced, her son is already a winner, as is she, her husband and their other two sons. It is an inspiring real story.All the very best to Huma and her family, especially her son. We look forward to updates on her son’s post-college life.

A Practical Guide in dealing with Adversity By Amazon Customer "Wrapped in Blue" is an inspirational narrative of a mother's journey to overcome the heart -wrenching challenges which are faced by autistic children. The story of Zoya's unrelenting efforts, both as a mother and as an educationalist, to normalise and improve the life of Zaki, the eldest of her 3 sons who is eventually diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder, is a compelling and touching testament of a mother's devotion. The book is particularly interesting for its cultural insights into the cultural and societal norms of upper middle class Pakistan. Islam provides Zoya and her family with their inner strength and guidance, as they proceed in the lifelong challenges of raising Zaki with the realisable goal of allowing him to live life as independently as possible. This book is must read for families of children with special needs, as a reminder that love, faith, spirituality and contemporary medical therapies can co-exist to overcome the handicaps and even turn apparent misfortunes into magical gifts.
