But it doesn't matter because even if I didn't know her, I'd give Tales From the Table a glowing review for a multitude of reasons. The tales she tells of family and friends and exotic locales peppered with delicious recipes is funny, smart, friendly, and drool-worthy. If you're looking for some great recipes (from New Joisey, Paris, Lima, or south Florida), or an entertaining read, or the PERFECT gift for the person who is difficult to buy for, you're going to love this book.Whether she's sharing her adventures from 'accidentally' ending up on a nude beach, or this quote: “When I'm eating... (low country boil)...I end up going feral … butter drips from my elbows and I once left a restaurant with a piece of crab shell hanging from my eyebrow,” to memories of, “No holiday was celebrated without (mom's) quivering green (jello) mass landing on the table, freshly slipped from a Tupperware mold, like an alien spaceship,” to her chuckle worthy chapter headings: “It's not fake anything, it's real cubic zirconium,” each turn of the page brings another smile, a little insight, and even a Rick Steves' worthy travel tip.Buy the book. A collection of short stories involving the author's travels, each begins with vivid descriptions of time and place and proceeds to tell tales of the interesting people she meets along the way. Then comes the delicious part--descriptions of the food and drink she enjoyed in each story and a recipe for re-creating the experience. Cocktails. Soups. Desserts. Entrées and so much more. I can't wait to try a few.Ms. Connell writes in an easy to digest manner that so that each story take on a life of its' own. She left me seeing what she experienced and almost smelling the foods along the way. From South America to Africa to Europe to her family in Pennsylvania (yes, she even gives the recipe for her mom's green jello mold), the author takes us from place to place, from table to table, from recipe to recipe.I know you'll enjoy Tales from the Table and you might want to give it as a gift to someone who enjoys traveling and cooking.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Mmmm Chocolate By Joo I was told this is one of the only books to show you how to easily make your own chocolate from raw ingredients. I didn't really believe it, but on having a look online, it's true, there is very little information on actually making your own chocolate. There's plenty of books and websites on how to melt chocolate to make new shapes but that's not this book's main selling point.The book starts out with info on chocolate, then has the main recipes on how to make dark, milk and white chocolate basics.I volunteered and got involved with a facebook group to test out the recipes. I am normally someone who avoids spending too much time in the kitchen, but I soon got addicted. The ver first time I tried following the first recipe I didn't have a clue and didn't have half the proper tools for the job. I had no idea whether I was doing things correctly as I didn't know how the ingredients would react. Then I had to do it again and again and again as I wanted to get better. My colleagues like my new hobby as there I make far too much chocolate for me to eat. They always asked what liqueur I used, but it's just honey.There are also recipes for the insides. My particular favourites are peppermint creams and the clotted cream mousse. Sometimes I'll make my own chocolate for the outside and sometimes I'll melt a cooking chocolate to make things easier. None of the recipes have loads of ingredients. They are really simple. I do advise on reading the recipe thoroughly beforehand, especially whether to use teaspoons or tablespoons. One recipe said up to 6 teaspoons of honey. I used 4 tablespoons!!!There is a lot more info and help in the book such as troubleshooting, alternatives to recipes, what ingredients and moulds to use.As a whole book, this one seems to cover everything you need to know about making chocolate (and a note on how to best enjoy chocolate) Be warned, it's addictive. I am awaiting more moulds so I can make even more chocolates.

I began tentatively, not sure if what I was being asked to do would produce anything I fancied eating. All I can say is – go with it. The business of spreading the ingredients, vigorous mixing and re-melting sounds like a faff but it’s quicker and less messy than making scones. At least, the way I make scones! Once you have perfected the technique you will never look back. You’ll start to think of your own variations and you will suddenly find you have an amazing number of friends who want to help you sample them and decide on the best!If you enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, if you just love eating wonderful chocolate in flavours you can’t buy, then you’ll love this book. I bought a few silicone moulds which each cost much less than a box of chocolates and now I’m addicted to making as well as eating the delicious stuff. The author has put a lot of time into trying out techniques and recipes and has put in all the ground work so that we can fly. The photographs are spectacular. This is a great book. I’m buying the paperback too, as soon as it’s available, because the photos are just too gorgeous and too colourful to hide away on a kindle.

This is a very handy little book covering more versions of Goulash than I have ever dreamed existed or encountered in my travels. By Revonda I particularly like the way the ebook gave us some diabetic myths and then went on to give true facts to dispel them. In addition, other healthy suggestions were offered along with those words of advice.The 28 foods that diabetics should eat has an explanation of why they are good for you. Also included are foods to avoid and why. My mother is a diabetic and these tips about food selections should help her immensely. Since my genetics are the same, these warnings and points should help build a foundation about how to avoid becoming a diabetic myself.Towards the end are some recipes to try out, I especially want to try the Fall Pumpkin Quiche.... Oh yeah, there's also a bonus at the end of the ebook that you can download for free (“20 Simple Habits That Will Add Up To 20 Years To Your Life”). Not quite what I expected By Chicago Book Addict I was excited to pick up this book because I have a personal interest in food and cooking and also have a history working in marketing on food brands, which has meant first hand experience with food trend spotting. In short, this book seemed made for someone like me. I also read Save the Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye, and the Heart of Jewish Delicatessen, also by David Sax, so I was already familiar with his writing style and voice.Similar to to Save the Deli, I found the strengths of this book to be the quality of the research and Sax's knack for creative descriptions. I especially love his creative descriptions because I read a lot of food writing, so I appreciate his ability to describe foods and the food scenes in ways I haven't previously heard in other books. And not only do his descriptions feel new, but they do an amazing job of bringing to life what he is talking about. Whenever he was describing a scene in this book I truly felt that he transported me to the middle of it.That said, my experience with this book was not without issues. Like Save the Deli, my biggest issue was with the overall organization of the book. It really didn't feel like there was a continuous narrative throughout or some kind of structure tying all the pieces together. Because of this, some of the chapters and even paragraphs within the chapters felt disjointed and it interrupted the flow of the book for me.I also felt like this book was more about telling story of individual trends (i.e. cupcakes, cornets, bacon, etc.) rather than establishing a kind of framework for how food trends form. He does touch on the latter within the individual stories, but not to the degree that I expected. Because of this, it felt like a book that was geared more toward a foodie who likes reading food books for entertainment than someone in the food industry who might be trying to understand the food trend model in order to apply it to their job. It's worth noting because if you are coming to it hoping it will make you better at forecasting food trends, you'll likely walk away disappointed.Overall I think there is a lot to like about this book, but there are also things holding it back from being more broadly applicable.

I didn’t realize how much planning went into making something as innocuous as a kind of apple worth more than another variety of apple. I was surprised to actually be interested in pork belly futures. I was given a free e-copy to read on NetGalley a couple of months ago and I am still thinking and talking about it, so much so that I am buying a hard copy to share with friends and to read again. I will probably buy another copy as a gift for a relative who loves marketing. Highly recommended for foodies and those who like marketing or economics.

By Galley Hunter The Tastemakers: Why We're Crazy for Cupcakes but Fed Up with Fondue, provides an interesting look at food trends, exploring how and why they come about. It is broken up into three parts. Part I deals with the Four Types of Trends, Part II: How Trends Break Out, and Part III: Why Food Trends Matter. I was immediately hooked from the beginning, which explores the cultural trend with talk of my all time favorite dessert, the cupcake. It was fascinating and surprising to learn how cupcakes became so trendy in the U.S. I continued to be curious about the other types of food trends discussed: agriculture, chefs, and health.I was still very engaged with the book as I began reading the second section (about how trends break out). But somewhere in the midst of part two, the author started to lose me, and my interest began to wane. The research and writing were well executed, but perhaps the book included almost a little too much detail for my taste. Just as I was plugging along through the beginning of part three, and a bit too much detail about Indian food, things really started to lose steam.I considered tabling the book for awhile, but thankfully the author brought me back around with DC food trucks. Food trucks fascinate me, and DC is just outside my hometown. That section was a definite win for me. Then Sax continued to bounce back into my heart with bacon. My beloved bacon. I pressed on, and enjoyed reading about fondue, and its cycle of popularity. Finally, who could resist the cronut closing? I've yet to try a cronut (a hybrid croissant/doughnut) but the idea delights and intrigues me. Overall, this was an interesting read about food trends, and why we buy the things we do. "Mug Recipes Cookbook" provided me over 50 recipes with proper guideline and all of them are incredibly easy to cook! My sister already cooked one of them where I was guiding her through reading this gem. It was yummy and tasty. Actually, I liked these all nutribullet recipes and I determined to cook them all. Thumps up!

By Eimis I've never been a guy who would like to cook food on my own, however I always taught I should learn it as it's useful skill to have in your life. After I bought this book I realized that I can be a great cooker too by applying simple steps taught in the book how to prepare healthy, delicious snacks and meals. I already tried to cook few of the meals in the book and it was easy and quick! That's what I wanted!

About the Author Starmel Spring (aka Richard Hodgert) and Leroy Henry met in the magical summer of 1967 when Leroy was the Hodgert family's paperboy. They became fast friends and soon discovered they had an affinity for the same kind of music, literature and humor. Richard and Leroy would go on to write over 150 songs together.Richard was raised in the Shoreline suburb of Seattle, Washington where he spent his entire life. He was a voracious writer with no bounds, whether it be song lyrics, poetry, or stories. In all rooms of his house, one could find mounds and scraps of paper with his creative burst of thoughts and unique outlook on theworld. And it never stopped until his passing in 2013.Leroy - a music supervisor, producer and songwriter - attended the University of Washington and enjoyed a career as a disc jockey in the 70's and early 80's at rock stations in Seattle including KCMU, KZOK and KZAM. He then transformed his love for entertainment into the retail world as a music supervisor, curating songs for brands worldwide. Leroy was the founder and vice president of the music department at PlayNetwork in Redmond, Washington where he currently acts as the Executive Producer of Global Starbucks, helping to create the in-store experience. He currently resides in Edmonds, Washington with his wife Bonnie.

By Sydney Baer Although it is very long, this review contains no spoilers, so read ahead without fear!The book begins with very little exposition and our main character, Albert, is given almost no background. I did not feel connected to him nor did he even feel like a three dimensional character most of the time. Albert was merely a vehicle through which the reader could experience "the adventure" which ended up being all a bit too cheesily psychedelic for me.The beginning of the book ricocheted from one character or event to another so quickly that it nearly gave me whiplash and certainly didn't give me any time to imagine or enjoy what Spring and Henry were presenting! I never really felt like the story slowed down enough for me to be able to become immersed in the story, and they did have some fun concepts! I wish they had taken the time to really *show* us their world instead of telling us about it in short snippets.The writing was, unfortunately, not very impressive. Many of the phrases, while not incorrect, are strangely worded and rather awkward. Many of the sentences felt like a child who has a penchant for compound adjectives had written them. However, it is far from unreadable, and there were some moments that I really liked. At one point Albert is describing a librarian, and he says, "She was quite a pleasant person, like most librarians but sort of mysterious and most definitely resembled a certain character in a novel she had recently authored." I've typed the quote verbatim from the book, including the missing comma after "like most librarians", but, barring that, I thought that that was a very insightful and witty comment. Unfortunately, those are far less common than the plain absurd, of which this book has plenty.While music was a driving force behind Spring and Henry's story, I don't think quite so many lyrics should have been included in the text. The lyrics are not good enough on their own to be enjoyed as poetry and I have no idea what they might sound like with their musical accompaniment, so I have can't enjoy them as music. I found myself skimming past any lyrics I came across. I did think that the choice to add their soundtrack on Spotify and give the readers the option to check it out was very fun. I think those sort of interactive options are a really great way to add to a piece.Despite my gripes with the story, it does have some very good points. It was reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland and A Wrinkle in Time, both amazing stories. It was a fun romp, but it unfortunately lacked depth. I feel terrible giving this book a less than stellar review, because I was really moved by the authors' friendship and the fact that Henry published this book in honor of his late friend and co-author, Hodgert/Spring. However, I have to give an honest review.I stumbled across a YouTube video while looking for their playlist online, and it featured Henry doing a reading of the book. He gave the audience a little context and was talking about his and Hodgert's time writing it. He said it was in 1973, and during this time they were experiencing a gas shortage, the Vietnam War, and Nixon, among other things. Hodgert quipped that even "blueberry muffins are up a buck a pair", and this joke went on to inspire the entire story. For the next four years, the pair spent time in Henry's recording studio writing it.After reading about the authors in the book and hearing this, I wanted to read *that* story! I think the bizarre universe of "Blueberry Muffins" would have worked much better within the framework of two friends writing a book in a recording studio during the cultural revolution of the 1970s. That sounds like literary gold, and a great way to add some humanity and heart to this book. I'm not saying that it should have been a "word for word" account of their life back then, real life is so rarely as entertaining as fiction, but I think using those experiences to write a story would have created a more enjoyable piece.Overall, I really respect the effort that went into this book. As an aspiring writer myself, I can appreciate how hard the writing process is. However, while I certainly admire their dedication, I can't say that this book was any better than just okay. I hate that that is the case, but it's the truth.I received this product at a discounted price in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

I adore it when an author, or in this case authors, help you escape into another world. After all that's what reading fiction is all about. Leaving your worries and troubles behind, and going in living in somebody else's life for a while. The authors do a beautiful job of creating this fantasy world in your mind. Excellent descriptions help you to imagine actually being there. I was very, very impressed that they took the time to select songs and music that would enhance each chapter as you read it. I have never read a book before where the authors have done that. It made it very enjoyable.I received this book in exchange for reading it and sharing my opinion. It's a very enjoyable book, the only change I would have made would have been to develop the main character a little bit more before the story started. I missed having any back story in him.So flip on the music, lay back and escape into another world for a while. You won't regret it.

By Brittany B I really liked the idea of the music playlist to accompany each chapter.The writing of the plot was okay and in many ways reminded me of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time: A Novel (Vintage Contemporaries). However, unlike that book, Albert is not autistic. I liked the plot my main issue was that I didn't relate to Albert. Albert's introduction was him getting ready for work, heading out the door, being picked on my the mean kids at the bus stop and then eventually getting on the wrong bus. So basically, there wasn't much of an introduction of what is supposed to be a main character.Overall, I don't feel like I wasted my time reading the book, however it is not one that I would read over and over again.Disclaimer: I may have received this title for free or at a discount in exchange for a fair and honest review.
