Like his poetry, his prose wraps this wonderful, sad story in almost ethereal language, telling the story so close to the heart that one is pulled into it. The story unfolds leisurely; The reader is brought into its core by setting up several what- ifs...and those what-ifs deliver in the end. Reading this novel feels like stepping into the past. One doesn't have to be in this part of the world to experience what life is like for Alice and her friends and family. I particularly like Alice, the novel's main focus. She is a girl entrenched in her era, but seems apart from it at the same time. I like her because she seems so real and so desperate. Greenwood writes with such detail and clarity that one can feel the warm breeze or hear the ease in their voices as Alice and Beth talk with one another. This novel is about much more than beautiful words and a girl's coming-of-age; It's about life and love and tragedy and death. It will leave you wondering what happens to all the characters years down the dark, smoky road. I highly recommend this haunting novel.

Review "A Second Dawn" the odessey of one family's journey to selfl-discovery following 1930's re-location and WWII's effects By eddie sigman As the story, "Second Dawn" unfolds the reader is required to keep track of prior events as the suspenseful story of youth's yearning, changes and growth thru painful family/peer/community relationships, adventures, struggles with addiction, neglect, poverty, child abuse, mental illness, traumatic brain injury, adoloscence during post WWII in family and communlity life in a small rural SW village in isolated Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico. The trauma of re-location following the 1930's great depression to the mystery of the atomic bomb explosion trials keep the reader on the edge of mystery. The author as a wordsmith paints a vivid picture of the post WWII families and communlities in rural SW New Mexico displaced by 1930's relocation and 1940's WWII era after effects and the long term consequences on those individuals and families as they struggle to survive against all odds. Alice, the main character's strength, resilency, weaknesses, human fraility, in spite of the odds against her shines throughout the unfolding story as a ray of hope to those people connected to her. Swept Back into Reading By Amazon Customer I found myself caught in the complexity of the characters and their situations...even found myself reading faster and faster..caught in the moments of suspense, hoping for the demise of some and the triumph of others...impressed with the realism depicted in the abuse and its effects on all of those involved.
