The Ice Twins (Wheeler Large Print Book Series), by S. K. Tremayne

Review "'The Ice Twins' is by turns a thriller, a mystery and a ghost story. Tremayne, the pseudonym for a London journalist and best-selling novelist, melds all these ingredients, coming up with enough twists, insights and chilly moments to make the story his - or her? - own and to keep a hungry reader savoring every spoonful. . . . A story set on an island known informally as Thunder deserves a thundering finish, which Tremayne deftly serves up, along with a touching coda that would play well on film."―Washington Post"The family Moorcroft has taken up residence in a remote corner of Scotland not unlike The Shining's isolated Colorado mountains. It's a suitably eerie setting for the haunting incidents that transpire after one of the family's 6-year-old identical twins falls to her death."―O Magazine, "The Season's Best Mysteries and Thrillers""Will have you binge-reading to the end."―Redbook"The death of one of the twin daughters of Sarah and Angus Moorcroft jump-starts this superb tale...Tremayne effectively delivers a psychological gothic thriller with supernatural overtones while avoiding clichés. Grief's debilitating effects on children and adults further elevate this gripping story."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"The chilling story of the death of one identical twin sister and the effect that it has on her family. . . . Filled with secrets and lies, this gripping psychological thriller will keep readers absorbed until the final page."―Library Journal"Tremayne (a pseudonym) does a terrific job of building suspense until events reach their climax in the midst of a violent storm."―Library Journal"Unbearably gripping and suspenseful."―Sophie Hannah, internationally bestselling author of The Wrong Mother and The Dead Lie Down"Richly evocative and profoundly eerie, The Ice Twins is a mesmerizing story of grief, loss and betrayal set against a backdrop that's as beautiful as it is haunted, just like the tragic family at the story's center."―Kimberly McCreight, New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia"The next Gone Girl . . . [An] eerie literary spine-chiller."―Sunday Times Travel Magazine (U.K.)"With its creepy premise and bleak but beautiful settings, S. K. Tremayne has created a haunting, powerful thriller."―Paula Daly, author of Just What Kind of Mother Are You?"Chilling and utterly compulsive . . . As the action plays out in the claustrophobic confines of the cold, creepy island, it builds to an incredibly tense and shiver inducing conclusion."―The Sunday Mirror (UK)"Very eerie."―Marie Claire (UK)"A tense psychological thriller that builds with every page."―The Sunday Post (UK)"Stunning."―The Mail on Sunday (UK)"Beautiful paced, teeming with psychological shivers, The Ice Twins is a notable debut."―The Times (UK)"The Ice Twins has grip, pace and bags of atmosphere... It also has one of the cleverest endings of recent thrillers."―Sunday Times (UK)"Strange and moving.... complex and dramatic... The advantages and hardships of island life are well depicted and the Gothic old is suitably creepy."―Sunday Herald (UK)"A knife-sharp debut thriller . . . Gripping, sad and desperately poignant, this is a debut to die for."―The Daily Mail (UK)

Unique, Unsettling Family Drama By Irish Sarah and Angus, parents of Lydia and Kirstie, two blonde haired, blue eyed twins, notably called, The Ice Twins, must grapple with the reality that one twin has died in a terrible fall from a balcony. The Ice Twins takes the reader on a twisted ride of twin psychology, parental angst, marriage deterioration and more on a small remote island in Scotland. This is a very mysterious story that unfolds slowly while everyone begins to fall apart at the seams though the story takes place a year after the death of the little girl. There is a lot of fascinating psychology in this book, such as why does the dog, Beany, behave differently between the twins and why does he act a certain way with the surviving twin? There is some good stuff in this book. The twin aspect I found to be super interesting. In this story, they are identical and hard to distinguish. While reading this book, I found there is no one to trust in the story making it very unsettling. The surviving twin seems to be self combusting while the parents try to amble along to find remedies, solutions, justifications and blame for all of their problems which begin to have a very claustrophobic feel due to their decision to move to the lighthouse island to an aged house that once belonged to Angus's grandmother. Once there, things really go haywire. Is the kid having an identity crisis? Maybe she is being haunted? Or, is her behavior based on more sinister happenings within the family?Angus and Sarah are facing some serious troubles in their marriage. You get alternating viewpoints and narration throughout the book from Sarah and Angus who don't really communicate well to each other due to the loss of their daughter and other events. It's hard to believe either one of their stories and you never know if either is telling the truth. This is a pretty good, taunt psychological mystery. I was interested, intrigued and creeped out by The Ice Twins. I found Tremayne's writing to be very good and I would read future books by this author. This story was well done and, for a nice change, I was glad to hit on a good mystery that combined psychological twists with a great setting and well distinguished characters. The story didn't bore me with too many side or back stories and endless details. Well done.

Harris With more limited time, I've gotten really selective about what I choose to read these days. Something has to really grab me in the book's description to get me to sign on for the commitment. And I have to say, when I read the synopsis and blurbs advertising S.K. Tremayne's "The Ice Twins," I simply had to take the chance. Billed as a psychological thriller, "The Ice Twins" deals with a family in crisis. When one of a pair of identical twins dies in an awful accident, what toll does it take on her parents? On her remaining sibling? And what if the surviving daughter suddenly claimed she was the girl who had died and you had no real way to be sure? It's an unnerving and disturbing premise. I was simply in love with the idea of "The Ice Twins."Getting into the book, we meet Angus and Sarah Moorcroft a year after the terrible event. Still trying to figure things out, the couple are seeking a new start. Angus has a property in Scotland, a secluded island with primitive living conditions, and they see the renovation as a way to start rebuilding their lives. As any tragedy would influence, the couple has a somewhat strained relationship and each are rather tentative with one another. But the quiet truce (their marriage wasn't exactly pitch perfect before the accident) is suddenly disturbed when Sarah figures out about the possible mistaken identity. Should she keep it a secret? And Angus seems to be harboring secrets of his own. As the family starts living the island life, tensions start to rise. The girl is disturbed by visions of her sister, Sarah is still wracked with guilt and grief, and Angus still has those aforementioned secrets. I won't reveal much more of the plot, but the story unfolds in a multi-layered way and we're never quite sure where we are headed.Part Gothic thriller, part domestic drama, part ghost story, "The Ice Twins" proceeds with an ominous tone. Whatever has destroyed the family can only be set right by the truth. But who exactly knows the whole truth? By the time we get to the suspicions and shattering revelations, I started to realize one thing. Despite how much I liked the story's premise, I just wasn't emotionally invested in the outcome. The recriminations from the day, the guilt, and daily struggles of the family are well depicted. I just didn't really care much for the Moorcroft clan and felt a chilly distance."The Ice Twins" does really succeed in making the isolated setting an integral character to the piece. And in describing the small Scottish community, Tremayne makes it come to life. I simply wanted to love this book, but merely liked it. When some of the secrets and suspicions started to surface, I wasn't particularly surprised. One, in particular, made me cringe. Some of the startling revelations seemed like fodder for a lurid soap opera. Nothing is more devastating than the loss of a child. I guess I wanted to feel more of that as I connected with the characters. This might have had the potential to rip your heart out and leave you emotionally bereft. Instead, it never dug deeply enough. Lots of potential, but instead of a big finish, the ending left me feeling a little apathetic. KGHarris, 5/15.

It was also very creepy. Am I the only one who finds identical twin children just a bit on the creepy side? Maybe it isn't all twins; maybe it's just these. I guarantee that you will be as creeped out as I was. The book begins approximately fourteen months after one of their twin girls dies in a tragic fall from a balcony. Sarah and Angus believe that the girl who died was Lydia, until one day when she says "Why do you keeping calling me Kirstie, Mummy? Kirstie is dead. It was Kirstie that died, I'm Lydia." And with that statement, Sarah's life comes crumbling down and the mystery begins. Because the girls were identical twins with matching DNA, it's impossible to do a scientific test to know for sure. So Sarah is plagued with questions. What if she made a horrible mistake? What if Kirstie is trying to deal with her grief by becoming her sister? How well does she actually know her children Now it is tough to write the surviving twin's name because there is so much back and forth and so much confusion. I don't want to give away any major spoilers, so I will just stick to calling her "Kirstie" in my review.Sarah makes some questionable decisions when Kirstie makes this statement such as ignoring it. Then she tries to placate her and give her what she wants, even if she doesn't believe Kirstie is telling the truth. I can forgive these decisions though because of all the grief and shame that she is feeling. Meanwhile Sarah and Angus move to a remote island in Scotland for a fresh start and the creepiness factor increases by a thousand. Suddenly, Kirstie starts seeing her dead sister's ghost and Sarah becomes even more disturbed and more convinced that her daughter is losing her mind. But this was such a well written mystery that it was hard to figure out who was going crazy: Sarah, Kirstie, or even Angus, who is hiding some secrets of his own. The mystery of which twin dies unravels to its climax, where a bigger mystery is revealed: the mystery of what really happened the night Lydia died. The author writes of the unpredictable, ferocious Scottish winter and the isolation of the island with such vividness and intensity that I could swear I was right there. The remoteness of the island just adds to the creepy factor. This is an amazingly haunting, suspenseful mystery that will keep you up just so you can find out what happened.

One of the world's most celebrated bakers in America shares his insider’s secrets to making his delicious, artisanal bread that will have home bakers creating professional-quality products in no time—and inexpensively.Bien Cuit introduces a new approach to a proudly old-fashioned way of baking bread. In the oven of his Brooklyn bakery, Chef Zachary Golper creates loaves that are served in New York’s top restaurants and sought by bread enthusiasts around the country. His secret: long, low-temperature fermentation, which allows the dough to develop deep, complex flavors. A thick mahogany-colored crust is his trademark—what the French call bien cuit, or “well baked.” This signature style is the product of Golper’s years as a journeyman baker, from his introduction to baking on an Oregon farm—where they made bread by candlelight at 1 a.m.—through top kitchens in America and Europe and, finally, into his own bakery in the heart of our country’s modern artisanal food scene.  Bien Cuit tells the story of Golper’s ongoing quest to coax maximum flavor out of one of the world’s oldest and simplest recipes. Readers and amateur bakers will reap the rewards of his curiosity and perfectionism in the form of fifty bread recipes that span the baking spectrum from rolls and quick breads to his famous 24-day sourdough starter. This book is an homage to tradition, but also to invention. Golper developed many new recipes for this book, including several “bread quests,” in which he brilliantly revives some of New York City’s most iconic breads (including Jewish rye, Sicilian lard bread, Kaiser rolls, and, of course, bagels). You will also find palate-pleasing and innovative “gastronomic breads” that showcase his chef’s intuition and mastery of ingredients. Golper’s defining technique comes at a time when American home cooks are returning to tradition-tested cooking methods and championing the DIY movement. Golper’s methods are relatively simple and easy to master, with recipes that require no modern equipment to make at home: just a bowl, an oven, and time—the dough does most of the work.

I took it as kind of an artistic expression what Zachary Golper is trying to do with the bread: expose the process, and bake it dark. So it's Artie's is not a big problem for me although I think it's kind of hipsterish. i think the black polished/painted edges are cool actually, but I'm against the black recipe pages because I can't easily take notes. My cookbooks are written on all over as I try things and maybe I'll have to buy a white pen to do that here. I have made three pretty complex breads so far, probably the three most complex ones in the book: 30 hour sourdough, 60 hour sourdough and Multi grain. I think the breads have been outstanding in flavor and texture. I'm an experienced baker so it's hard for me to know how a beginner might feel about the way the recipes are written, but I found them thorough and precise. I will eventually wander into the quick bread chapter and make some of the interesting scones and biscuits, but right now I'm super happy with the results.

Yes, the spine is exposed. I want to bake from this book, I don't care what it looks like on my shelf. Most of the books I bake from have broken spines and are covered in flour. I'm not careless, but I buy books to use them. The recipes look interesting and the images are beautiful.I am in no way connected to the author or publisher. I buy lots of books on Amazon and rely on reviews. I understand people questioning the spine but to me it's not a problem.I will update after I bake!

Aside from being an excellent book about baking, it is a good read---entertaining stories about the chef's career and development as a baker, and the authors' quest for good bread and good food in NYC. I read it cover to cover, which I have never done with a cookbook. The insights and useful tips clearly come from someone who has acquired his skills through hands on kitchen experience working with some of the nation's best bakers and chefs. The book is also packed with astonishing photography. The publisher's choice of binding (spineless binding?) was not typical, but this isn't the first time I have seen it...same as another (Amazon offered) cookbook, Polpo, written by a Venetian restaurateur in London.

17 of 21 people found the following review helpful. I don't trust all the other reviews By JE Schmal Just a few facts to be aware of before buying this book based on its ratings (I found it by looking for the best reviewed Mediterranean slow cooker cook book): The book was Self-Published on February 22 of 2015. As of March 25, 2015 it has 58 stellar reviews. That is twice as many total reviews as a recipe book by a known author released by a major publishing house five months ago (which had been featured on NPR). All the reviews for this book are 4 or 5 stars, except for 1 one star review. The English in this book is very poor indeed. The author's biography alone is an example of mixed tenses and confusing word choices. Interestingly, the reviews have some pretty poor English as well. The truth is that I don't trust the reviews to be written by disinterested, random customers like myself.I actually ordered the paperback book first, but after re-reading the information about the book and its reviews, I cancelled the order (the price was too steep to take a chance on something that I already wasn't trusting). As I had already downloaded the Kindle Match version to my Kindle, I had to keep that and pay the moderate price (my fault for not reading everything before ordering/downloading).The recipes don't look bad in terms of ingredients/interest. As the only other 1 star reviewer mentioned, however, I don't really find the various fajita, enchilada and taco recipes to be Mediterranean. (Last I checked, Mexico was in North America). I don't know how extensively the recipes have been tested and am a bit afraid to try them. Some recipes list a specific slow cooker size to use, others don't. The instructions can be confusing. If I've just cooked all the lamb and vegetables, seasoning, etc. together in the pot, what does it mean to say "To complete the dish, you may add some lamb mixture and sprinkle the cheese"?If you want a few ideas for some recipes, you might spend a few dollars on the Kindle version (although I wouldn't recommend it). Do not spend the ridiculous amount being asked for the paperback!

By Ilze Powell Very helpful book for those loving Mediterranean cuisine.Personally, I am not a big lover of 'do it right' and 'follow the recipe' but this book seemed so laid back and easy to use that it lured even the biggest artist into its delicious traps.I would definitely recommend it to all my friends who have traveled here but don't know how to bring all that gastronomic charm back home - here you go, there's one book that holds most of the best kept Mediterranean secrets!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delicious Mediterranean Slow Cooker Recipes! By LoveBooks These healthy Mediterranean recipes are delicious! My personal favorite I have tried so far in the "Pot Roasted Mediterranean Chicken." The author has done a wonderful job with all of these recipes. There are pictures to show you what each recipe should look like when it is finished cooking. All of the ingredients and directions are very easy to understand and well organized. This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever read! I highly recommend this book!

My passion for food and eating it has evolved into a passion for eating well; enjoying food that not only satisfies the soul, but also nourishes the body in a healthy and nutritious way. All my recipes are low carb, or LCHF {Low Carb High Fat} and most of them also Paleo, as this is how we eat at home. This is not a diet book, nor is it a book that aims to give nutritional guidance or eating plans, it is a source of fabulous, easy to prepare and family-friendly LCHF meals. This book is all about the enjoyment of food – in its real form – and to show you that you can eat well and healthy without compromising on taste or pleasure. All the dishes are low carb and real – nothing processed; no sugar, wheat or other nasties. Our own personal ‘diet’ – or rather lifestyle – stems from a combination of following a Paleo, Primal and LCHF lifestyle. We want to feel good and be healthy – and still enjoy food!

Following the publication of Chromes in 2011 and Los Alamos Revisited in 2012, Steidl's reassessment of Eggleston's career continues with the publication of The Democratic Forest, his most ambitious project. This ten-volume set containing more than 1,000 photographs is drawn from a body of 12,000 pictures made by Eggleston in the 1980s. Following an opening volume of work in Louisiana, the ensuing volumes cover Eggleston's travels from his familiar ground in Memphis and Tennessee out to Dallas, Pittsburgh, Miami and Boston, the pastures of Kentucky and as far as the Berlin Wall. The final volume leads the viewer back to the South of small towns, cotton fields, the Civil War battlefield of Shiloh and the home of Andrew Jackson in Tennessee. The "democratic" in Eggleston's title refers to a democracy of vision, through which the most mundane subjects are represented with the same complexity and significance as the most elevated. This work has rarely been shown and only a fraction of the entire oeuvre has ever been published; the exhaustive editing process has taken over three years. This gorgeous set includes a new introduction by Mark Holborn and the republication of Eudora Welty's original essay on the work.William Eggleston was born in 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee. He took his first black-and-white photographs at age 18. His first color work was shot in 1964 in color negative film, but in the late 60s he began to use color slides. Eggleston was the subject of a landmark solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1976.

William Eggleston: The Democratic Forest, by Eudora Welty

Review Taken as a whole, this enormous collection is kind of like bellying up to a luxurious buffet―it's delicious, and overwhelming, but worth the heartburn. (Mark Murrmann Mother Jones)The images are democratic in the sense of how varied and inclusive they are. Eggleston shoots parked cars, flower vases, cemeteries, gas stations and piles of dirt, and each photograph in these long, glorious sequences (there are 10 volumes in all, with titles like “Pittsburgh,” “Berlin” and “The Pastoral”) merits its place. There are few photographers whose images I would wish to see more than a thousand of in a single sitting. Eggleston is easily in that class. (Teju Cole The New York Times Magazine)The year’s major, massive photographic event... Whittled down to just 150 pictures in full, saturated Egglestonian color when it was published in 1989, the book now stretches to a vast expanse of images, most never before published, vividly illustrating his definition of what it means to photograph democratically―in other words, everything. (Rebecca Bengal Vogue)More than any other project by Eggleston, these photographs deliver his aesthetic, which, as the title gives away, is also a philosophy of democracy: the power of the ordinary, the beauty of contingency, the aim of a universalist view... Steidl has been steadily working to put Eggleston in wider circulation, and this anthology is a cause for celebration. (Prudence Peiffer Bookforum)

About the Author "William Eggleston was born in 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee. He took his first black-and-white photographs at age 18 and soon became serious about photography, though he never studied it formally. His first color work was shot in 1964 in color negative film, but in the late 60s he began to use color slides; it was some of those slides that he brought with him to New York in 1967, when he met Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, and John Szarkowski. It was Szarkowski who curated Eggleston's landmark 1976 solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York--a breakthrough in the perception of color photography as a serious form of fine art. The recipient of the 1998 Hasselblad Award, Eggleston's work was most recently seen in Documenta11 and in a major retrospective at the Fondation Cartier in Paris."Mark Holborn is an editor at Random House in London.Eudora Welty is the author of many novels and story collections, including "The Optimist's Daughter" (Pulitzer Prize), "Losing Battles", "The Ponder Heart", "The Robber Bridegroom", "A Curtain of Green and Other Stories", as well as three collections of her photographic work (all from the University Press of Mississippi)-"Photographs", "Country Churchyards", and "One Time, One Place: Mississippi in the Depression"."William Eggleston was born in 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee. The 10-volume set just arrived this week, so some initial impressions (hopefully Robin Benson will weigh in with his always invaluable reviews)--the printing is gorgeous, the pages thick and substantial. This is Steidl, so the production values are top-notch.While some of the images are familiar--those published in the first iteration of "The Democratic Forest"---this provides a far larger and richer glimpse into the body of work Eggleston produced in the late'70/'80s. Not the least of which is the evolution of his pictorial style into one that--as Mark Holborn notes in his intro--neatly straddles the line b/t concrete and abstract. What this shift in form means for Eggleston's treatment of his subject matter and his emotional relationship to those subjects is something I'm trying to figure out. To me, while Eggleston's presentation of the banal offers an apparent cool detachment from what he's shooting (he was unimpressed by the cultural changes enveloping the South and everywhere else), his response is actually visceral. That's the neat trick he pulls off, and the tension b/t the photos' concrete and abstract imagery reinforces the emotional dissonance. In raising the issue Holborn opens the door to a line of analysis I hadn't seen before; one that ought to rejuvenate--broaden--the critical understanding of Eggleston.More later.Addendum:One additional thought and this was my reaction to Chromes and Los Alamos: The number of images can be overwhelming; it in some ways dilutes the power of the best photos, lacking the punch of the tightly edited Guide or the original Los Alamos.Though each of the ten volumes is organized around a theme (Louisiana Project, Berlin, Surfaces)--making it a terrific if academic exploration of Eggleston's evolution of treatment and subject and form--diving into the set teeters toward a didactic rather than aesthetic experience.Which is not to denigrate the editors' incredible efforts and success in producing a thorough exploration of Eggleston's late 70's and 80's photos. Clearly a project of love. And welcome glimpse into a huge body of work. I'm sticking by my 5 stars.

Weighing over 30 pounds, the carton arrived with "Heavy" stickers attached, my first delivery was damaged; the slipcase is a bit flimsy resulting in heavy damage to one of the volumes. "The Democratic Forest" is a highly recommended publication brilliantly sequenced and thoughtfully combined in thematically titled volumes.

Published in conjunction with the first large-scale retrospective of Picasso's sculpture in the US since The Museum of Modern Art's historic show of 1967, Picasso Sculpture is a sweeping survey of the artist's profoundly innovative and influential work in three dimensions.Over the course of his long career, Picasso devoted himself to sculpture wholeheartedly, if episodically, using both traditional and unconventional materials and techniques. Unlike painting, in which he was formally trained and through which he made his living, sculpture occupied a uniquely personal and experimental status in Picasso's oeuvre. He kept the majority of his sculptures in his private possession during his lifetime, and it was only in the late 1960s that the public became fully aware of this side of his oeuvre. Picasso Sculpture presents approximately 150 sculptures--many of them captured in newly commissioned and sometimes multi-view photographs--alongside a selection of works on paper and photographs. Organized into chapters that correspond to distinct periods during which Picasso devoted himself to sculpture, the publication features an introduction by the exhibition curators as well as a richly illustrated documentary chronology focusing on the sculptures included in the exhibition. A comprehensive bibliography and list of historic exhibitions related to Picasso's work in sculpture closes the volume, advancing the understanding of Picasso's practice and lifelong commitment to constant reinvention.

Zetler Roberta Smith's New York Times review of this MOMA exhibition begins thus:"Many exhibitions are good, some are great and a very few are tantamount to works of art in their right-for their clarity, lyricism and accumulative wisdom. The Museum of Modern Art's staggering "Picasso Sculpture" is in the third category. Large, ambitious and unavoidably dizzyingly peripatetic, this is a once-in-a-lifetime event."Given the seemingly never ending succession of exhibitions examining Picasso's artistic output from differing standpoints, his sculptural work has received scant attention. Its worth noting that Picasso produced around 4,500 paintings versus around 700 sculptures. He held onto many of the latter; this explains why a large bulk of the works in this exhibition are on loan from the Musee Picasso, Paris. While I will resist giving a comprehensive description of the broad scope of his sculptural oeuvre, suffice it to say that there is an astonishing variety of styles on view. Early sculptures show influences from primitive art, cubism and surrealism. In the thirties we note the influence of his muse Marie-Therese Walter and there are whimsical and playful creations from the fifties featuring painted sheet metal, carved pebbles, wood and ceramics. Two examples demonstrate Picasso's incredible inventive ability; the 1942 Bull's Head made from a bicycle seat and handle bars plus the 1958 Bird made from painted wood, forks (the legs), plaster, nails (the eyes), screws and eyebolts. This beautifully illustrated and annotated catalog will give some consolation to those unable to attend the exhibition in person. Given my previous unpleasant MOMA experience where massive crowds seemed more intent on taking selfies or photos of the exhibits rather than examining the artworks, perhaps the catalog might be the safer, more private option. The large sized illustrations are excellently reproduced and multiple views are supplied when appropriate. Highly recommended.

I do love his paintings By Amazon Customer The museum I work for, Sculpture by the Sea in The Hague, will have a Picasso exhibition from October 2016. This outstanding catalogue makes me even more eager to be a part of it. I do love his paintings, but the sculpture and ceramics emphasize his constant play with perspective even

An excellent job cataloging and describing Picasso's third dimension By Phil Reagan An excellent job cataloging and describing Picasso's third dimension. The show at MOMA in New York required 11 galleries and many different variations in Picasso sculpture. The book did a great job of describing his work in both text and photographs.

Excerpt from The Thinning of the Veil: A Record of ExperienceEmpirical evidence that human personality survives the physical body through which it has manifested itself, and that communication is possible between persons discarnate and those still in the fleshy, has been gathered, sifted in some degree, and made accessible to the public, by Spiritualists, the Society for Psychical Research, and other investigators. In recent years such evidence has presented itself from many sides, in rapidly growing volume; and it now amounts, in the judgment of some eminent scientists, to ample proof. At any rate, no theory hitherto suggested short of the Spiritualist one, is reconcilable with all the relevant facts of well-authenticated experience.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Grahame Wood opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for Wawa dairy products. Since then, the convenience store has grown into a well-known company that competes against the biggest industry players in the world in three areas: fuel, convenience, and food, all while maintaining their personal approach and small business mentality. Now, almost 50 years later, Wawa has opened its first store in Florida and begun to play on the national field. How did it happen? What are the reasons for their success? Why have they been able to go up against the big guys with nothing more than homegrown talent?

With a mixture of personal history and business advice, Howard Stoeckel shares the last 50 years of Wawa’s growth, development, and expansion. It’s the story of how a small company with a funny name made a big difference and all it took was a little goose sense.

Review

"Corporate histories are seldom engrossing and even less frequently do they touch an emotional chord, but that's exactly what the books does. Wawa fans, and general business readers, will relish this empowering story."—Publishers Weekly STARRED REVIEW

"The cult of Wawa lives on...The company’s six core values and a leadership style focusing on employee ownership with a strong sense of corporate social responsibility are major topics. Written in a light, conversational tone, though, this is a quick, engaging read. VERDICT A must-have for Wawa devotees and recommended for others interested in a behind-the-scenes look at an East Coast retailing legend."—Library Journal

The CEO of the Philadelphia are convenience chain gives company history, philosophy to celebrate 50th Anniversary By Steve Ramm Wawa is the brand name for an ecer-expanding chain of 24-hour convenience stores headquarted in suburban Philadelphia with locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware (and moving into Florida). They are the third largest seller of brewed coffee in their market and one of the most recognizable brands in their region. The day after I post this review the company will celebrate its 50th anniversary. And in honor of that occasion the current president of the company wrote this book ( with help from an author who has “helped write” books for CEOs of other “innovated” companies such as Commerce Bank (now TD Bank) and Home Depot.Based on my read-through of the 240-page hardbound volume (in typeface that is large, and easy to read) I see the book being mostly of interest to the following groups of readers:1) First and foremost, the employees – both current and former – of Wawa. They are featured heavily in the book – with sidebars and photos of selected employees who either made a difference or tell why they love their employer. (One of Wawa’s images is the happy employees, who get lots of benefits and opportunity for advancement within the company.2) Next in line are the Wawa customers. These are folks who go to Wawa at least every day for coffee (there are usually 5-6 types of brewed coffee at all times) and, in many cases, for gasoline. (Virtually all the new Wawa stores are being built on large plots of land outside the city limits, where the sell fuel.) And then there are the cigarette buyers. As the author points out in the book, selling tobacco at “the lowest price allowed by law” is a controversial issue but it sure brings in the money. And while folks are picking up cigarettes they’ll grab a coffee or a made-to-order hoagie (If you don’t know what a hoagie is, this book is probably not for you.)3) The last group will be those folks who love books on innovative management techniques. Howard Stoeckel – Wawa’s CEO – give lots of marketing techniques here while applauding his employees.I guess I fall into category 2 above as there are at least three Wawas within a mile of where I live (though none has gas stations). I found it a light read and, yes, a bit of self promotion. There are 16 pages of photos and graphics which brought back memories of the early days of Wawa for me. And, on page 141, there are even the lyrics to the Wawa Theme Song, something I honestly don’t remember! So if you live in the Delaware Valley – or USED to live here – I think you’ll find the book a fun read. Just remember it is a large bit of self-promotion for the company.I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm“Anything Phonographic”

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good book By Bayfisherman The Wawa Way is a good book about a great company. It lays out the driving ideas behind the best convenience store in the world. It is well worth the time to read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A friendly way to run a company. By Amazon Customer Aside from the odd name of the company, which is carefully explained by the author, this is an excellent treatise on how to motivate employees to concentrate on the needs and interests of customers, and to convince customers that the company really appreciates their business. Clearly explained examples of how the management successfully motivates employees and attracts customers are included. The history of the company itself is quite interesting, and descriptions of the rewards, and pitfalls, of expanding in several eastern states are very informative. It's light reading but offers a good chance to understand how a non-publicy traded company can become so appreciated and popular, when it follows its own sound insights.
