Some Things Never Change, Some Things Always Do By Michele Wallace I have lived with the text of this book, written by my mother, Faith Ringgold, about my first book Black Macho and the Myth of The Superwoman for 35 years. It is a pleasure to see it, finally, in this published form. Not only are the many beautiful reproductions of her art from the 1960s and the family photographs a delight for me to review once again, I am also pleased that I can finally read what she has to say with a fairly cool and appraising eye, able to take in the many merits and insights of the text. What surprises me about it the most is that my mother could have written this 35 years ago, at the age of 51, and still have the same opinions all these years later. Whereas, almost nothing I wrote in Black Macho would I repeat or continue to agree with now. I feel like I have changed in every way possible and that I am always changing, my opinions about such matters in particular. My mother's firmness and certainty continues to fascinate me.

The book is a large 8.5 x 11 but is thin with only 75 pages. The large format gives the font plenty of space and makes it easy to read. There are 38 photos that are a mix of Faith Ringgold’s art and historic photos of family.Ringgold’s book was written over 30 years ago but remained unpublished until now. It is a line-by-line critique of Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman, a best selling book by Michele Wallace, Faith Ringgold’s daughter. Black Macho has remained in print for 35 years and has been a resource for Women’s Studies programs nation wide.Ringgold’s stories are very personal and written with focused fury. The energy is directed at the injustice of the inaccuracies written by her daughter and accepted as truth by the public. Faith had a need to set the record straight about Black Macho and the short comings of the feminist manifesto.In general it is a feminist critique on the 70’s feminism anthems. It’s a call to respect your mother, ancestors and your family and understand that they’re support is what we need to rise up to our potential. – Grace Matthews Dec 16, 2015

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Mother, Daughter, Feminism By Ellen C. Dubois This is a very powerful book. Read in conjunction with Michele Wallace's Black Macho and the Myth of Superwoman, it constitutes a rare example of the kind of dialogue women should be having across generations about the different but compatible ways they see the condition and challenges of women. I particularly appreciated the definition of feminism: women learning to trust other women; and Faith's comments on the seductive power of "the pedestal." And yes, the chance to see Faith's art in this context -- most importantly her White People series, which I didn't know about before -- is a very important dimension. Finally, this book reminds us that mother/daughter relations may not be the easiest of bonds but they certainly are the most powerful and important.

About the Author Matthew Mead (1630–1699) was an English Independent minister. Mead succeeded John Owen in September 1683 as one of the Tuesday morning lecturers (presbyterian and congregational) at the merchants' lecture in Pinners' Hall. Pleading there on one occasion on behalf of poor ministers, he got a collection of £300., ladies putting their rings and watches into the plates. In 1686 he was again in Holland, preaching at Utrecht; he returned on King James's declaration for liberty of conscience in 1687.

Required reading for all sincere Christians By MaestroC Matthew Mead's, The Almost Christian Discovered may be a dated book but it has a timely message. The Bible encourages us to "examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith" and that is what Mr. Mead challenges us to do. Mead takes his study from the story in the book of Acts where the apostle Paul stands before the tribunal of Festus the Roman governor of Judea and King Agrippa, the last of the Herodian king of the Jews. As Paul contends for his faith, King Agrippa proclaims that Paul's arguments "almost" convinced him to become a Christian. From this, Mead contends that there are many in the church who are just "almost" Christians and have not experienced a thorough work of conversion within themselves. As the author takes the reader through the evidences and traits of the "almost" Christian, he encourages us to pray earnestly for that thorough work of conversion that will make us "altogether" Christians! An excellent book that I encourage all Christians to read.

One - no information about the author such as background, education, etc. What gives her the authority to write about this topic? I have no idea. Two - the writing is horrible, choppy, grammatically incorrect - " If you are able to gradually make small changes, you can eventually follow a raw food diet entirely. Jumping into the deep end feet first can be a bad idea." "One Ripe Bananas", "One Quart Cup Of Crushed Walnuts", "Two Tablespoons of Syrup" (what Syrup?). Not to mention some of the recipes look questionable - Veg Kebobs involve cut vegetables with vanilla yogurt poured on them.

Recently I came across raw food diet. I didn't have much knowledge about it until I found this book. The name itself indicates raw food so it does not require much time to prepare. Main ingredients in most of the recipes are fresh fruits and vegetables which is very easy to get and tasty to eat!

It also emphasizes healthy foods, and not just inexpensive foods. Given that it's not expensive, it's worth a buy. This book is extremely helpful to learn how to cook just for one person, besides, it provides good tips to cook faster and in an easy way. The book is structured very well, after the initial chapters sort out your kitchen, appliances, essentials for your cupboards and even a nice workflow or kitchen triangle. It even covers different preparation techniques, hygiene, high risk foods etc.

Interesting Look At NFL San Fransisco 49er's Quarterback Colin Kaepernick By Dawn Dolly Webb My foster son is a huge fan of the San Fransisco 49ers, but struggles with reading. I wanted to get him to actually sit down and finish a book (which he rarely does), so I started looking for a subject that would interest him. Wah-lah, this biography about Colin Kaepernick seemed to do the trick. Knowing little to nothing about this great quarterback of the 49ers, I thought I should probably read the book as well so I could test him on his knowledge. To my surprise he soaked up every single chapter of this book and was really excited for me to read it with him. To my surprise, this book was VERY interesting and extremely well-organized.The book follows Colin's life in chronological order starting with his childhood and working into his professional career. Because my boy is in high school and sports are a huge part of what he enjoys about school- we both enjoyed reading about Colin's beginnings in sports and how he got started playing in high school. A lot of the book follows his professional career, though delving into his college years at the University of Nevada and moving onto his NFL career. I'm not the biggest football fan, but this book was written in a really interesting way. It did include a lot of statistics, but at the same time didn't overwhelm you with numbers. There was a STORY behind the numbers, and that's what made it an entertaining read.I especially liked the last chapter which focused on the legacy that Colin has created and what the future may hold in store for him. He's obviously a brilliant sports star and learning about his life up to fame was very interesting. My boy is now full of even more San Fransisco 49ers trivia. There were a lot of things he knew about Colin before reading this book, but he did feel like he walked away with a lot of new knowledge. There were a few things that he was surprised to learn and he really did enjoy the book.The book was well-written and easy to follow. Unlike some NFL biographies we've read together that were poorly organized and full of statistics but lacking any kind of substance- this book did a great job of not only providing you with the facts, but also giving you an amazing story that was definitely worth reading. Definitely one of the best NFL biographies I've read- and it certainly got my boy inspired to read, which earns it a definite 5 stars from me.

Clayton Geoffreys did a good job of gathering his facts By Mary Jane Very interesting read on the story of Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers. It chronicles his life from childhood and goes through all the highs and lows that made him one of the most notable players in football today. Clayton Geoffreys did a good job of gathering his facts, as well as making the book easy to follow and enjoyable to read. It's a short read but entertaining nonetheless. Highly recommended for football lovers and 49er fans alike!

This book rewards thoughtful reading By BD One of the things I most hoped for after reading Josephine Garner’s first book “Solomon’s Blues” was that there would be a sequel. I needed to know more about and to be able to follow the lives of the two remarkable and fascinating people, a White lawyer and his Black former housekeeper as they planned to relocate from where marriage for them at that time would have been illegal to the city of New York. I was anxious to know how they were received in that city which still, in 1950, regarded black/white relationships with great suspicion and possibly disdain. This new book, which invites us jnto the private life of these two persons, Esther and Taylor, and their interrelations with friends and family, is that sequel, and a very satisfying one it is.Like a good sequel “A Banner of Love” gives enough reminders of the development of the main characters and situations in “Solomon’s Blues” so that we can recall what life had been for Taylor and Esther in the “separate but equal” days in rural Texas. In the new book they are living now married in an apartment in Greenwich Village, where they have good neighbors who play a significant part in their lives. As in “Solomon’s Blues” the author does not hesitate to give us glimpses into what marital intimacy means to them, but such details play only a “by the way” part alongside the really important changes Taylor and Esther are experiencing. The development of these aspects of the story is gripping, and I had to try hard to resist the temptation to turn to the last past to see how it all works out.As in the first book, the author very appropriately (and absolutely intentionally) uses her extensive knowledge of the biblical book which is frequently quoted in “Solomon’s Blues,” and she does this in a way that could even be seen as a unique method of exegeting scripture without in any way proselytizing. She has a strong understanding too of the theological terms and practical applications regarding “works” and “grace” and uses these words relevantly in Taylor’s and Esther’s conversations. Her skills in sociology and the use of history give us a clear view of the background against which the whole of the drama plays out.I have been reading “A Banner of Love” chapter by chapter every day after lunch to my wife, and it proved to be an experience we both enjoyed and to which we looked forward. Particularly intriguing to my wife, who is from the West Indies, are the many references to being black and the challenges and opportunities that were faced by a female in a largely white society and environment. The author shows a remarkable understanding of the minutia of situations and opportunities that presented themselves to a racially mixed marriage in a country in which such marriages were still less than common.This book is more than simply a story of two people who had, from societal points of view, appeared to be quite mismatched. There is much more than that, and I personally hope that Josephine Garner will continue with this fascinating saga reflecting the continued development of Esther and Taylor as a racially mixed couple and the parents of bi-racial children (should this be in their future), and show us readers how their lives will reflect and are affected by the changing environment of our society.

You need to be knowing how to hold the pencil and what detailing is.
