Selena, by Ernest Brawley

Review "Selena is ardent storytelling. It sings of California's landscape with unabashed gusto and native pride." ~ Thomas Sanchez, author of Rabbit Boss"A story as vibrant and earthy as its heroine and her people... a big, powerful novel, packed with action and alive with unforgettable characters!" ~ Literary Guild Magazine"There is not an area of novel writing where the author is not scarily gifted. His plotting is intricate but never rings false or obtrudes. His descriptions of places, scenes, machinery, processes, illuminate like flares. His ear for dialogue can handle English, Mexican-American and 'pocho' Spanish. His narrative pace is swift. His style is joyous and free. His feeling for character is mind-boggling. His amazing eye makes every page fresh. NO AMERCIAN WRITER IN YEARS HAS PRODUCED SUCH A READABLE, DEEP AND FULLY REALIZED NOVEL!" ~ San Diego Union"Lusty, robust, pulsating, lyrical...authentic power!" ~ Philadelphia Inquirer"Masterful ... terrific!" ~ Los Angeles Herald-Examiner"Need not to be compared to Steinbeck; it stands on its own feet, speaks with its own fresh, strong voice!" ~ Louisville Courier-Journal

A Magnificent Novel By Matthew Howe I loved Ernest Brawley's first novel, The Rap, but Selena was a book that really hit me hard. You don't skim an Ernest Brawley novel. It's a lame analogy, but reading Selena is like dining at a five star restaurant and eating the best meal of your life. You want to savor each bite, enjoy it slowly, and completely. If you could get away with it, you'd lick the plate. You wish the experience would never end."Selena" is that experience in book form. Not only is the story utterly compelling, the characters complex and engaging, but the book is written beautifully. Brawley is in possession of an enormous talent, but not a showy talent. He writes with a natural, honest poetry that makes each paragraph, each description a treat to be savored. But the real show-stopper here is Selena Cruz herself. Brawley manages the miracle of turning words on the page into a living, breathing woman. From the first time we meet her as a nine year old firebrand, to her prepping for an event as a teenage beauty queen, to her more complex life as a lover and labor leader, Selena is as real, as engaging, as compelling as any protagonist in recent memory, and her struggles are all the more powerful for it."Selena" is a book you never quite put down. It's with you the whole time you're reading it, even when you're not actually reading it. And even after you're done, it stays with you.Read "Selena." It's a magnificent novel.

The Agro Bidness in Tracy CA By Buxx While this novel is not quite as raw as Brawley's first (The Rap) it still will bring chills, chuckles and a certain amount of distatse. The story is centered around the fictional town of Calmento California, but anyone from California's Central Valley will easily identify the town as Tracy, where Brawley grew up.Brawley's characters are fully developed, the plot is sophisticated and complex, yet the reader is drawn into the simplicity of the lives of California's field workers. It is a pity that Erenst Brawley has only written three novels, he was a budding master, reminiscent of Willard Motley and John Steinbeck.

It's one of those rare books you'll want to read more than once. I grew up in the place and time in the story and everything about it hit home. The characters totally embrace you and won't let go, especially Selena herself. She is this beautiful, Mexican girl who lives in poverty, working in the fields during the era of the United Farm Worker struggles. She has a vision of the Virgin Mary which promises her greatness. She gets abandoned by the boy she loves, but, well..I don't want to tell the rest, just read it. Narración conmovedora y hermosa historia.
