Gainesville follows the twisted branches of a restless family tree in a small Texas town. As tragedy strikes each generation in a slightly skewed fashion, what remains is the relentless passage of time toward an eerily familiar pattern.
In One Story, The Two Sisters is woven from an array of beautifully haunting short stories. It details the lives of two sisters, both cast as wildly imaginative entities, each more bizarre than the next. Winnette joyfully plays with life forms as he presents the sisters as (1) an olive at the bottom of a dirty martini; (2) Shel Silverstein; (3) transoceanic swimmers, and so on. The result is an entertaining, skillful meditation on art, love, family, the creative impulse, and what can and cannot be communicated in a single story, or a single life.
''...although the novel is merciless, with characters and times and places readily coming and going, being introduced only to slip away and to be lost--and a great deal is lost--[Winnette] always reward[s] the reader with yet more compelling characters, more compelling plotting, more compelling reading. The novel remains throughout very accessible and readable (which I really admire). That's a phenomenal tension, and a prime source of the work's artistry.'' --Adam Jameson, author of Amazing Adult Fantasy and Giant Slugs ''Killing, killing and more killing are the three central leitmotifs of both novellas. And this is very funny stuff.''--METAZEN
''Winnette is a talented writer and there is so much to see and do in Fondly, a whirlwind of character development and evaporation. It is a visceral book of self discovery, eulogistic familial drama and, at times, humor.''--HEAVY FEATHER REVIEW
''Winnette moves in and out of plot as if to deny the very idea of plot, yet adores narratives so ardently he fills every space with a new tale or idea. It becomes a balancing act, a house of cards where each card is a story and each story has the same face, his own, which is also that of his minions. Let him be the historian of a young nation yet unseen.'' --JESSE BALL, author of The Curfew, The Village on Horseback, and Samedi the Deafness, among others.

''Winnette, like the best AM radio preachers, is able to make a story out of everything and nothing, and still make you believe. These startling, well-muscled novellas will take you places you didn't even know existed and then leave you there to fend for yourself'' ----BRIAN EVENSON, author of ten books of fiction and a three-time O. Henry prize recipient.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An unrelenting and rewarding read. By Jen Gann Though quite different in many ways, these two novellas share one common trait: their energy. In both works, Winnette moves forward unrelentingly, much like the bus in the classic movie SPEED. The first novella, TWO SISTERS, plays with the concept of two characters and their dependency on one another. For me, at least, the interesting aspect of this work is its unwavering movement, its reluctance to stop long enough to deem a single version as an absolute. The same might be said of the second novella, GAINESVILLE, which moves forward throughout a time that feels almost cyclical, telling the story of a family throughout multiple generations. Here, too, Winnette refuses to play favorites; though there are standout moments, certainly, no single character, situation, or scene rises as "the" one. What I admire most about these two novellas is Winnette's ability to somehow lead his readers very, very quickly through a world while also creating vivid, memorable moments. Though he never stops to dwell on them, Winnette's novellas contain moments of true intensity and surprising--considering the speed at which he moves--tenderness.

For people who love quirky, well-written stories By JudithAnn As I'm not a short story lover, especially not the very short kind, I found the first part of the book, In One Story, The Two Sisters, a little bit challenging to read. Some of the stories are really very short and stop where maybe I had wanted more. On the other hand, the stories were very well written, they read almost like fairy tales, and the things that happen to the two sisters are so bizarre, it's really amazing that an author can think them up.I'm sure a short story lover who can enjoys some weirdness will love these stories, too. The sisters where quite similar over the different stories, but definitely not the samesisters in all the stories, if only because in one story they are two halves of an olive!Generally, they are quite different in what they want to achieve, but also similar because of their family bond and the fact that in many of the stories, it's the two sisters against (or as opposed to) the rest of the world.I liked Gainsville even better. This is the story of several generations of a family, who are struggling with low wages and violence. The people that are followed through the (four or five) generations either kill someone or are killed themselves and there is no happy ending for any of them. The ending, in fact, was rather ambiguous to me. I wasn't sure how it fitted in the story exactly, and felt a bit of a let down.I should have written a family tree for this family, as I moved from one family member to a next generation, to a step brother's daughter, etc. I cannot repeat the story at all, there are just a few situations that I do remember, but in all, it was a very entertaining story.
