By karyl I've always been fascinated by spirits. My parents weren't very adventurous drinkers -- my mom has a glass of sweet wine with dinner and my dad will have a beer on Saturday night, but every so often they'd break out the Galliano and have Golden Cadillacs (a drink I just realized I've never tried). For myself, I didn't really start drinking until my mid-20s; my core group of friends looked down on the people getting s***-faced at frat parties, and to be honest, none of us liked beer anyhow.But then I met Jeff Cioletti and his wife Craige, and all of a sudden, there was all this beer that sounded amazing and delicious! It didn't hurt that the craft beer scene was really starting to take off, so I had lots to choose from.Since I've been back in Rhode Island this last year, I've also noticed the explosion of craft spirits. Watching "The Booze Traveler" on the Travel Channel has also broadened my horizons (which is why there is now a handle of Bols genever in my liquor cabinet).Now Cioletti has published the perfect book for people who may be looking to broaden their horizons a bit more. There are so many spirits in this book I had never even heard of, but which now I want to try. Baijiu, huangjiu, shochu, and others have all been described in such a way as to de-mystify them to this reader for whom they're all totally new. (I only wish I lived nearer a large Chinatown so I could possibly try them.)Each chapter takes us through a specific spirit and tells us a little bit about the history of it, where it comes from, and how it's made, plus gives examples of some excellent brands so we don't have to wander the aisles of the local packie in ignorance. Cioletti is never pretentious and always encouraging, plus he really does know his material thoroughly. He has researched and sampled each of these alcohols himself, and admits that in the course of writing this book, he himself has gotten out of his comfort zone (as vast as that is) a few times. His main point is to enjoy these spirits in moderation, not to ingest as much as possible in order to get hammered. If that's your only goal when drinking, this book is beyond you.I would encourage you to buy this book, read it from cover to cover and make notes of your favorites, and then keep it in your car, so that when you happen upon a bar or restaurant that serves one of these adventurous spirits, or if you stop by your local liquor store with the idea of having a flight of your own at home, you have the perfect reference material right in your hands.

Some chapters will be familiar, some are completely esoteric. Great way to expand your knowledge of the culture of drinking in different countries and get out of your comfort zone. Plan to read one chapter each week for a year and try that week's drink - beginning January 2016!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An unrelenting and rewarding read. By Jen Gann Though quite different in many ways, these two novellas share one common trait: their energy. In both works, Winnette moves forward unrelentingly, much like the bus in the classic movie SPEED. The first novella, TWO SISTERS, plays with the concept of two characters and their dependency on one another. For me, at least, the interesting aspect of this work is its unwavering movement, its reluctance to stop long enough to deem a single version as an absolute. The same might be said of the second novella, GAINESVILLE, which moves forward throughout a time that feels almost cyclical, telling the story of a family throughout multiple generations. Here, too, Winnette refuses to play favorites; though there are standout moments, certainly, no single character, situation, or scene rises as "the" one. What I admire most about these two novellas is Winnette's ability to somehow lead his readers very, very quickly through a world while also creating vivid, memorable moments. Though he never stops to dwell on them, Winnette's novellas contain moments of true intensity and surprising--considering the speed at which he moves--tenderness.

For people who love quirky, well-written stories By JudithAnn As I'm not a short story lover, especially not the very short kind, I found the first part of the book, In One Story, The Two Sisters, a little bit challenging to read. Some of the stories are really very short and stop where maybe I had wanted more. On the other hand, the stories were very well written, they read almost like fairy tales, and the things that happen to the two sisters are so bizarre, it's really amazing that an author can think them up.I'm sure a short story lover who can enjoys some weirdness will love these stories, too. The sisters where quite similar over the different stories, but definitely not the samesisters in all the stories, if only because in one story they are two halves of an olive!Generally, they are quite different in what they want to achieve, but also similar because of their family bond and the fact that in many of the stories, it's the two sisters against (or as opposed to) the rest of the world.I liked Gainsville even better. This is the story of several generations of a family, who are struggling with low wages and violence. The people that are followed through the (four or five) generations either kill someone or are killed themselves and there is no happy ending for any of them. The ending, in fact, was rather ambiguous to me. I wasn't sure how it fitted in the story exactly, and felt a bit of a let down.I should have written a family tree for this family, as I moved from one family member to a next generation, to a step brother's daughter, etc. I cannot repeat the story at all, there are just a few situations that I do remember, but in all, it was a very entertaining story.

I get a sense of this intricate family weaving that leads to Cody and how she is sorting out her life. The story telling voice shows wonderment and puzzlement at the same time. There is a historical tale but the important story is internal. Incredible writing.

Short historical introduction provided by this book By Saint John This is one of the smaller books by AE Waite on the topic of Martinism and Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin. It is an introductory examination of the school as it was started by Pasqually, and how it continued through the rite of CBCS through Willermoz. At about 80 pages it goes into general discussion about the life and context of Saint-Martin and some of his more important associations.As such, the book is a historically-oriented introduction, and of value to researchers and readers interested on the topic, but certainly not his most dense and complete work. I would highly recommend for a comprehensive view his other title, "The life of Louis Claude de Saint-Martin, the unknown philosopher, and the substance of his transcendental doctrine", which is 5 times the size, and far more in-depth in its examination of the topic.

From the Preface. FOR a long time the public have been in want of a work on the art of Distillation and Rectification, couched in such language that everyone could appreciate it; and of such size and value that the price, and the time required to read it, would prove the least objectionable. From the best information I can gain, no work has appeared on this subject for many years. Owing to this fact, most of the improvements which have been made in the art have proved of little use to the larger class; and thus things have almost remained stationary with regard to this very important matter, particularly in this country; which is, indeed, greatly to be lamented, as we are in possession of everything, in the way of fruits, vegetables, &c. which have hitherto been used in distillation. I trust that in the following pages the reader will find everything that the present state of science calls for, and that the suggestions may a prove of great practical advantage; which I think they will do, as everything is given in the shortest and plainest manner. It is almost needless to say that I have consulted every authority that I could find, for the purpose of making this a complete work; they are, however, too numerous to mention here, and would be, moreover, of no benefit to the reader. With these few prefatory remarks, the book is submitted to the public.

Cathy Sharp is happily married and lives with her husband in a small Cambridgeshire village. They like visiting Spain together and enjoy the benefits of sunshine and pleasant walks, while at home they love their garden and visiting the Norfolk seaside.

Close This is a gritty story of life in a children's home in the east end of London shortly after World War Two. The tale of one of the girls in the home is prevalent, her name is Mary Ellen and also her friend Billy; quite a few occupants of the home also figure. There were many trials and tribulations suffered during life in this children's home. I was very engrossed in the story and it held my interest right until the last page, I couldn't put this book down and have ordered the second one in the series which comes out in March. I hope this will not be the last.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Substitute family By MKH I really enjoyed this book. I didn't want to put it down. It is sad when children have to go to a home due to family issues. Mary Ellen's mother get's very sick and goes into a hospital where she ends up dying. Mary Ellen's sister can't take care of her because she is studying to be nurse and is not living home. So Mary Ellen ends up in a Orphanage home. She has a hard time adjusting. The children are fed pretty well there. Sister Beatrice the Reverent Mother can be very strict. Billy who is Mary Ellen's friend ends up in Sister Beatrice's office a number of times where he is punished and hit with a cane. Angela comes to the home to see how she can make some changes on how it is run and make some improvements. She has a soft spot for the children and tells Sr. Beatrice that she should not be hitting children when they misbehave. Sister finds fault with Billy a lot. I just read this book recently and hated for it to end. I just seen that book #2 is out. I am going to order it now. Hope it is as good as this one.

Buchman's writing, and was so pleased to find this short story as his monthly "Ides of Matt" offer on his website, on September 14th. He gives a free read to subscribers of his newsletter. I highly recommend readers of M.L. Buchman's books sign up for his newsletter.Reasons why this short story easily earned ALL FIVE STARS:* Main characters (and secondary characters) are so real, they're people he (Buchman) brought into my life* Key emotional reactions are spot on* Seamstress and design details are accurate* Teenage girl characters are believable. Who understands 15 year-old girls? Apparently this author does.* Dialog made me smile. All-around clever dialog.* It's so much more than just a romance. I adored watching Lana and Tammy learn, grow, strengthen.* In such a short story, I completely believed Richard and Kari had fallen for one another, really developed a lasting commitment (the reasons why their genuine love blossomed were so real!), and that Kari had equally developed an attachment for Richard's daughter, Lana.* Clothes (and clothing design) played a central role, almost like a character.* Very rewarding conclusion.FIVE STARS!
