About the Author Kaye Starbird was born into a distinguished Army family in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Her poetry and prose have been published in a variety of magazines, including The Atlantic Monthly, The American Mercury, and Good Housekeeping. She is the author of four volumes of poetry for children, as well as the novel Watch Out for Mules.

War Through Different Eyes By Arden Allen The Lion in the Lei Shop by Kaye StarbirdThis book is a reprint of an out-of-print book written in 1970 by Kaye Starbird. I was provided an advanced copy through Bookbrowse. It begins on December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was bombed, and details the lives of the wives and children of the soldiers stationed at Scofield Barracks. Most history books deal with the effects on the soldiers, more so than on their families, making this novel different in that regard. It was a narrative in the voice of 5-year old Marty, she with the fear of lions in lei shops, and of her pregnant mother, April. Marty, of course, does not understand what is happening and why her father is no longer coming home; and April is devastated to find herself alone without him, with no way to know how long he will be gone and when or if he will even return. How much better to be able to count the days, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but you can't count infinity. Their experiences through each of their eyes, and their interactions with the other women and children, and the decisions those individuals make under very trying circumstances, add up to an entertaining and thought-provoking read, well-written and ageless in its presentation.

The two perceptive narrations, child's and mother's, make this WWII account personal By Neal Reynolds The child, Marty, was three years younger than I was on Dec. 7, 1941. However, she was right there to see the horror while I and my family were safely in California. However, even in that day, Hawaii was too close to us for comfort and so we had the fear without the actuality.Those few reviewers who found this boring certainly have no perception of what it's like to be uncomfortably close to such an attack. They're lucky.Anyway, this is a compassionate account of those days. The two accounts don't always agree in detail and this is good. It shows how memory can be faulty depending on one's individual viewpoint during times of crisis. This is enjoyable on one level and instructive on another. Either way, it's excellant and truly great reading.

In fact I liked it so much I loaned it to my husband to read and he is also fascinated with both the writing and the story. The differing tales told by the child and the adult sharing the same experiences made me reflect on my own childhood memories and how they might differ from my Mother's point of view. I have read a bit about WWII but never from the point of view of the civilians in Hawaii on December 7th. For them the war really started on that day while the rest of the country had months to prepare and gear up for the fight. I have to put in a word of praise for Nancy Pearl's Book Lust Rediscoveries. I have read several of them and intend to read more. She has turned me on to books that I missed (or perhaps was too young to read) when they were first published. Thanks Nancy!
