By Samantha Pereira I remember the first time I picked up a book by Jacquelyn Frank and it was the first book in this series, Jacob. I love how fabulous and gifted of a writer Frank is because she can see an overall bigger picture while carving out smaller worlds within that picture but still pulling in the bigger picture. I love that everything comes together in this book and yet Kamen and Genevieve are the center of the story. I'm sad to see the series end but what a great way to go!I love fantasy and paranormal stories because they really show how well a writer can write since the world is of their own making almost completely. Frank is a very descriptive writer so you see everything vividly from the colors of a characters hair to shape of the bed. I loved this story and part of it is because the author is just ridiculously talented.Ah, Kamen, darling, I do like thee. Kamen is an interesting character in that he was an arrogant, selfish, and greedy being for many centuries and only recently did he have a change of heart and attempt to redeem himself. He's well read, intellectual, clever, and usually reserved. I say usually because Vieve brings out the passionate and possessive nature he didn't realize he had.Vieve is a strong character because she's learned to survive even when others treat her as less than worthy. She's a half breed and that causes scorn until she meets Kamen. He accepts her as she is, as do the other members of the Nightwalker alliance. Kamen unleashes Vieve's passionate nature and helps her to view herself as worthy.While the fate of all the Nightwalkers is at stake, Kamen and Vieve find love and redemption in each other. Kamen might save Vieve but she saves him in kind. It is the best kind of scenario and one I truly love. The story is hot, fast paced, filled with adventure, and completely captivating.

As a matter of fact, you need to read ALL of the Nightwalkers, Shadowdwellers, and previous World of the Nightwalkers before reading this book. You will have no clue what is going on otherwise.Whew! Now that I have that out of my system. This is a great book, but it is not a standalone. It is the culmination of a fourteen book saga that was broken into three series. Do not be overwhelmed. These are wonderful, engrossing, sometimes funny books and I love them. They are well worth the time invested.Kamen was one of the primary bad guys throughout the World of the Nightwalkers series. There was some foreshadowing that he was more misled than evil, but he still did horrible things. I never expected to feel sorry for him and come to like him as much as I did. The fact that I was rooting for him by the end of this book and wanting everyone to forgive him is an example of how good a writer Jacquelyn Frank can be.Of course, if the male lead is the most hated man in the series, then the female lead must come from the most hated and feared species. Vieve is half Wraith and half human. Fortunately, her human half is dominant, so she is not as vicious and untrustworthy as the rest of the Wraith species. And that brings up a small problem I had with the book. Every other species is acknowledged as having good and bad individuals. The Wraith are feared universally. Yes, I understand they have the death touch, but there aren’t any good Wraith?As I said before, this is the culminating book in a series of fourteen. It has a good solid ending and ties all the threads together. I did see one chance for another spinoff, which would be wonderful because I love the world of the Nightwalkers. We will just have to see.One other thing, and this has nothing to do with the author or the story. For some reason, the publisher has decided to only release this book in ebook and audio format. The rest of the serie(s) have also been available as paperback. This ruins my set. I have all of the books in paperback, but cannot get this one in that form. Obviously, I am ticked. Will I buy it in ebook form? Of course I will, but I am not happy about it.This book was sent to me by NetGalley in return for an honest review.

By Jacque I'm jumping into this World of Nightwalkers series at the very end instead of starting from the beginning so I'm going to try very hard to not let my lack of knowledge influence my review. However, it's kind of difficult because for the most part I felt lost trying to follow along. Taking in the story as a whole was too confusing There are so many characters and trying to keep them straight in my mind was difficult. I ended up just shutting down and trying to forget they had a past history, absorbing Kamen and Viève's story and the battle they had with Apep.All the other characters aside, I enjoyed this book. At first I found it to be a bit dry. I'm not sure if the intent of all the world building in the beginning was intended to bring everybody up to speed of what's happen so far. For someone new to the series, I found it came across as someone has told a story so many times, they have lost their enthusiasm and now was just spewing out history just to get it out of the way. I almost gave up 20% in but pushed through it until finally coming to the meat of the story, Kamen and Viève. I liked and yet was annoyed by them both at the same time. I liked them because these two deserved some happiness in their lives. Viève had been, for her entire life been crapped on by other Wraith's because she was a half-breed Wraith. Kamen screwed the pooch playing on the bad side for so long and is trying to atone for his misdeeds. Two miserable folks finally finding love and acceptance, and coming together, even though it was pretty darn quick! And yet, these very reasons are why I found myself equally irritated. Kamen! Enough with the self-loathing. You screwed up, get over it! And Viève, you girl finally are being treated with respect. Stop acting like a kicked puppy.Now for the story, the battle and the ending. I enjoyed the whole bringing of all the races together to battle the evil and to triumph over all. It took me a while to get Apep. He's pregnant?! How...? What...? How...?! I did eventually get my AHA! together but until I found out the details, that made absolutely no sense. I do have to say, I did love to hate Apep. He made a great evil being with the whole 'take over the world and kill everybody who gets in the way' mentality. The epic battle did seem a bit deflated, however the journey all the Nightwalkers took to get there was very entertaining. I bet I would have enjoyed it even more if I had previous experiences with all the well established characters. Individually, confusion. However, I do like a variety of paranormal breeds and there was no shortage of them here.As my first book by Jacquelyn Frank, it wasn't half bad. I'm really looking forward to reading more of her works. I did learn the hard way this is not a series you want to jump into the middle of. The World of Nightwalkers series definitely needs to be read from the beginning because without know everything, a reader will just flounder around trying to puzzle it all together. So if you are picking up Nightwalker as your first book to read, put it down and start from the beginning. I'm positive it will be worth it.I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine.Stars - 3.5, Flames - 3

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Really good read By ElaineG The Photographer’s Wife is my third outing with Nick Alexander and he is turning out to be an author I really like. This is the story of Barbara and her daughter Sophie. Sophie is trying to persuade her mother to help her with an exhibition of her late father’s photography, something Barbara is reluctant to get involved with and for very good reasons.The story is told in two time frames, and I particularly loved the parts of the book that told Barbara’s life story. We first meet her as a five year old during the blitz and follow her throughout her life until the present day in a fantastic series of “snapshots” of family life during the second half of the twentieth century. It has a very authentic feel to it and I really liked the author’s attention to detail. During these sections we follow Barbara’s life with Tony and very slowly all the family’s secrets are revealed to us, if not to Sophie herself. They are very subtly brought to the fore as the author takes us almost to the point of reveal and then leads us to draw our own conclusions. Barbara is a fabulous character who really grows throughout the read and I really liked her.By contrast, it took me a while to “get” Sophie. I never really got a clear mental picture of her in my head and was wondering for some time as to how old she is. She is actually in her forties but she never felt like someone of that age, but came across as someone much younger. I had similar feelings about her boyfriend Brett. We are told he is American but I never felt like I was reading about an American, apart from the times he said “Gee”. I also found it difficult to age him, and it was only the fact that he was going bald that gave me any clues, although that in itself is not necessarily conclusive. From the moment we met him he just came across as a slimy sleezeball and I could never understand what Sophie saw in him.However, putting that to one side, this is a story that really captured my imagination and drew me in; one that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Have already recommended it to several friends and ordered it as a present for my daughter. Congratulations Nick ! Another wonderful read.

The relationship is indirect in that while the journalist cannot be an objective observer, neither is the reader an objective reader. News passes through at least two prisms of preconceptions, prejudice, and the like before being assimilated, discussed, and judged. With the advent of mass communication, the impact of news once it passes beneath society's microscope can be devastating to the people involved in the news event, innocent bystanders, and news reporters. This, coupled with pressure to increase readership, makes every newsworthy event into a powder keg of explosive possibilities. This novel delivered an insightful journey through one such event, with a concentration on other human issues such as ambition, choices, and self-awareness.My reading experience would have been improved by less exposition during the first quarter to half of the novel. Sometimes jumping into the fray is necessary, otherwise, all the background information seems extraneous. For example, the in depth description of Martin's bar buddies turned out to have little bearing on the story. Other descriptions and explanations were reiterated too often, in my opinion. There are minor editing issues, but none that detracted.In all, a good read from an author who does his research and thinks of his story from multiple angles.

Some books fly by, before you know it you’ve reached the end and you’re begging for more. But this book wasn’t like that. Don’t get me wrong, it was good it just had A LOT of buildup.The story centers on protagonist McCullough, a journalist who’s pretty much lost his passion. I think that’s something every person can relate to, especially authors. In the midst of his dull moment in life, McCullough decides to write a story like none he’s ever written before. This story is about a fallen athlete which we learn, as the story progresses, is actually closer to his own story.There’s a lot of description and character development in this book. Every detail is laid out bare and there’s little left to the imagination but those aren’t complaints. I don’t mind a little extra detail in books, but the way it was written made everything drag. I wasn’t bored, I didn’t dislike it, I just noticed that it took me a much longer time to read this book than I thought it would.There aren’t any edge-of-your-seat moments but you do get a lot of emotion as we watch a man kind of struggle to find himself even though he’s not one of those young, ‘free-spirited’ college kids. That’s what really came through in the story; the development and growth of McCullough was VERY well played out and expertly written. Caulfield is a genius at characterization which is sometimes all you need. If your readers love your characters as much as you do then your book is a success.The last thing I enjoyed about the story was the information given about the journalist realm. I don’t know much about it but my eyes were certainly opened. It was smart of Caulfield to adopt such an open form of writing on this topic. He easily addressed topics that could get touchy quickly. Things like our perception of the world around us, the deception of the media, and self-discovery.I enjoyed this book very much and I would recommend it to young adults and adult audiences as well. It’s a good, clean story with great characters and a strong message.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Field of Periphery By R3 Field of Periphery is more of a human-interest story than it is an action-packed novel, although toward the end the action ramps up a bit. As such, it has long sections where the author summarizes events or goes into detail about various issues. In particular, the book has interesting insights into both the magazine publishing and book publishing worlds--perhaps geared more toward other authors than toward the average reader.The story follows Martin McCullough in his newspaper reporting/writing career. Dissatisfied with the doing the same types of stories time and again, he decides to write a novel about a fallen sports star. Subconsciously, he is doing this because that is his story, having never made it to the pros himself. Although he comes to learn that writing for a newspaper and writing a non-fiction story are vastly different, he still applies his newspaper-writing techniques to his novel. This has unforeseen consequence that disrupt the town where his "fallen star" lives. And then the effect ripples out to capture Martin in its wake as well. The following quote tells about this:"People enter this business believing the news and events out here drive newspapers. They learn quickly that they have to drive the news, even if that means creating stories where none exist."What I liked most about the story was its foray into not only the decay of human life, but also that of rural America with the decline of various industries. The two themes ran parallel in both this novel and the story that the main character, Martin, sets out to write. A quote from the author describes this well:"This was Sunville’s ground zero he concluded, the starting point where desolation erupted like a volcano when the mill closed a decade earlier, wiping out opportunity and hope throughout the village below."What I liked least about the story was it contained a lot of backstory at the beginning, which slowed it down. Much of this could have been incorporated into the story where Martin was researching his characters, and parallels would have been better seen.Overall I enjoyed the book. It has nice descriptions of places and people. It discussed the lengths of deception people will go to in order to sell a product. The "periphery" part of the story directly refers to the "fallen star," it can also relate to Martin. He sees all the things in the periphery of his subject's life, not necessarily facts, but opinions of others, and incorporates them into the story he wanted to tell.

It details the trip of a group of brothel prostitues on holiday for the first communion of the Madam's niece. In the course of the story, it highlights both the virtues of the prostitutes and the corrupt morals of the general public, thus exposing the hypocrisy of burgeoisie society. Pick it up in French if you are able, there is wonderful slang and interesting nuances that you can't get from the English version.

Yackee This "edition" of La Maison Tellier is quite literally a photocopy of a copy of the book from one of Oxford's libraries. The production quality is very low, and it is not a properly printed book. The paper is cheap, as is the cover. The photocopied pages are crooked. I do not view this as a proper book.

Hardman This was the second of what are now 4 special edition reprints of older karate books issued by Master Publication of Canada, run by Don Warrener (Goju). Although this edition of Karate pioneer Motobu, Choki's book is useful and should a part of any historical karate collection, there are several issues which anyone wishing to purchase this edition should be aware of.The photos have been retouched, severely. Most of what you will see are not reproductions from an original text, but apparently paint or charcoal reproductions (or extreme enhancements, if you will) of the photos from an earlier edition. I found these no more difficult to understand than photos in earier reprints, although some of the ambiance is lost. This Masters Publications "translation" bears a striking resemblence to the English translation put out nearly twenty years before by Okinawa Karate teacher Oyata, Seiyu in 1977("Okinawa Kempo: Karate-Jutsu on Kumite"). Comparing the two texts sentence by sentence, I could not help feeling that the Masters Publications "translation" was simply lifted from Oyata's earlier work, although neither Oyata nor any other translator is credited with this book's work, unlike other volumes in this series. I also found it odd that Masters Publications was not able to translate into common pharmacological terms the exact same herbs Oyata left untranslated. Certainly a professional with today's resources would have had better luck?Although This newer edition is beautiful (cloth covered boards, cloth covered box, dust jacket, etc.), I must admit that I treasure more the unretouched little booklet translated by Oyata in 1977. For an English translation of Motobu, Choki's OTHER book, contact Patrick McCarthy of the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society.

Only small information for the present time By Dr. Helmut Kogel The work of Choki Motobu is very intersting, but the comments of the editor are not sufficient. The predominent part of the book shows only one charcoat figure on one page and a few words on the other page. There are no words about the basis of Motobus interpretation of Okinawan Karate. In the figures he shows a lot of sequences out of the kata naihanchi ( shodan, nidan, sandan) and some sequence of the Bubushi. He shows atacks to kKyusho points very exactly. But there is no explanation of the new editor, no comment. By Athanasios Stavrousis This book is a reprint of Choki Motobu's 1926 original "Okinawa Kenpo Karate-jutsu Kumite-hen", one of the most legendary karate masters to ever live, a true pioneer in martial arts ahead of his time. Motobu sensei was among the first karateka to stress the importance of kumite in the prewar period. The book was reprinted from the original by Master Publication of Canada.This reproduction of the oldest manual on kumite (sparring) presents the original kumite techniques which were developed in secret by Motobu Sensei through rigorous fights and intense training. They can be definitely described as genuine classical Okinawan kumite, which have little relation to today's sport karate. Motobu Sensei appears himself in the photos, demonstrating the proper execution of the exercises presented.However the byuer should be aware of a very important fact which is that the photos from the original manual have been severely retouched, meaning that basically they are almost painted sketches from an earlier edition of the book. It is worth noting though that it is a good attempt, considering that some of the photos did not appear in the original and were created based on the context. A vast majority of them still serves its purpose, meaning that they can be easily viewed, however there are some -important in my opinion- details which are gone.The book has also a nice cover and an insightful forward, plus the very important herb recipies that Master Motobu left.Personally if I had the option to I would seek the original little booklet with the original photos (even if they had bad quality) but still this book generally holds priceless historic value and it is a must have for any karateka and historian of the art. It is referenced in several martial arts books (rightfully) and we should consider ourselves very fortunate it exists (for the preservation of the original okinawan martial arts). It helps the reader understand the origin and early development of karate.

I’ve got more recipes to try with this set, need some practice , but all dishes are really good even at first time. Glad to have these cooking books, excited to try most of recipes, now I can combine two cooking ways.

This book looks inspiring enough to temp me to try the recipes. There is a good variety of recipes. There were a few not so inspiring, but overall it looks like a good book with how to maintain your pressure cooker.

Farro Salad with Fava Beans & Radicchio   1 cup farro 2 cups shelled and peeled fava beans (about 2lb. unshelled beans) ¼ cup extra-virgin oil 3 tbsp. red wine vinegar 1 shallot, finely chopped Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, top taste ½ cup shaved Pecorino Romano, plus more to garnish ½ head radicchio, thinly sliced   *Serves 4.    1. Combine farro and 5 cups water in a 4-qt. saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until farro is tender, 45          minutes. Add fava beans and cook for 3 minutes; drain, then run them under cold water until cool.    2. Meanwhile, whisk oil, vinegar, shallot, salt, and pepper in a large bowl until combined. Add farro and fava beans, Pecorino, and radicchio and toss to combine. Transfer to a serving platter and garnish with more Pecorino.

Shocked at How Good It is By TheConsumer I bought Payard Cookies with a grain of salt -- after all, this was the last name in desserts, and usually those guys do not share their secrets. I thought either it would bomb or it would be too technical and I would have to send it back.I'm shocked really. The cookies are fairly easy to make and the feedback has been great too. I have made almond-vanilla financiers, coconut financiers, almond chocolate chip balls, and almond crescents. (I have a lot of almond flour around.) The coconut financiers and the almond crescents got great feedback at work. Today I brought in the chocolate chip balls and the almond vanilla financiers.Responses from people: "The cookies are amazing." And, "Those cookies you brought in? They were just heavenly..."They are right, the cookies are amazing. I will be bringing some to my family when I go up on Christmas Eve. Thank you, M. Payard. You over-delivered. This book's a keeper.

Hopefully the others will be sensational,BUTthe Linzer cookie recipe was off. Someone didn't proofread it correctly. There was not enough flourfor the amount of butter listed. I think the recipe needed more flour or less butter

As for test of the book I made the Spritz cookie recipe. I had one of my assistants mix this twice both times the dough was far too stiff to be able to be packed. I mix the dough and found the same problem. There is an error somewhere in the formula. This dove is far too stiff for a spritz cookie. If I was interested in a recipe that did not work I would go on the Internet.

After all there are other books on cooking. I am an avid cook...at least at my own home. :o). As I read through the recipes, I realized that it is actually so easy to follow Allison's recipes. I love beef~~ there are 4 recipes for beef. I tried to cook roast beef and I could not believe that it is so easy!!!~~~ And the taste~~~so tender and delicious. There are 4 recipes for beef...unfortunately. I am looking forward to Allison writing more on crock pot cooking especially recipes for beef. My next recipe to try while waiting for more recipes on beef......lamb :0).

Now I can pay more attention to take care on my kid By CCY I was surprise that how simple to "Dump & Forget" the ingredients to a crock pot and still able to bring up the best taste of dishes after I follow the guide and recipes by Allison. My wife and I have tried out few recipes and is really taste good. Its really free up our time on cooking and able to pay more attention to take care of my 3 years old boy.Now we will have better option to prepare a good dish for our family Christmas party this year.Thank you Allison and looking forward to your next book.

The recipes itself includes breakfast, lunch, dinner that is further subcategorized into different type of meats, vegetarian dishes and finally the desserts. so far I have only tried the lamb stew and the quinoa recipes .The lamb stew was was perfectly done and tender-licious. Crockpot is a perfect choice to use for this recipe. There are only 4 recipes under the vegetarian category though. If only there are more cause the quinoa recipes is simply heart warming.
