By Mamabear Cherei It's not often that you will find a book marked as "authentic" and it really IS authentic! I was very impressed with all of the recipes! I love the tidbits that the author tells with each recipe. Which part of Italy a certain recipe came from and the alternate ingredients from other areas. There were a few ingredients that I was not really sure what they were.. but, I am sure a quick check with a grocery will answer those questions. If you are looking for REAL Italian sauces and pasta.. this is the book you've been waiting to read! And, then.. make! I'm looking forward to making quite a few of these. So many seafood recipes too!

From tyrannized foreign lands, broken armies, ruined dreams and religious persecution they came, allured by the freedom of an untrammeled land and gold in the gulches. Here a man could strike it rich, then lose it all to murdering highwaymen or find his scalp decorating a warrior's shield. Follow this group, almost a family, in their quests for fame and fortune over a decade long quest to explore the trapper's world of boiling rivers and glass mountains--the world of the great Jim Bridger that finally led to the quest to preserve its wonders for unborn generations. Historical novels generally herald the lives of heroes with superhuman feats and success beyond wildest imagination. The characters of this novel came early to the goldfields, led danger-filled, extraordinary lives on the frontier, but only Jake Smith and Jay Cooke attained the gold ring of Eldorado. Even Bill Fairweather, the snake charmer and discoverer of Alder Gulch had empty pockets when he was found shot to death in his San Francisco hotel room. But these courageous pioneers left future generations something of immense value: Yellowstone National Park. This debut work is a historically authentic storyline brought to life and instilled with the atmosphere and geography of old Montana. Relive those freewheeling days in this last vast wilderness and the most harrowing survival ordeal of the Great American West.

The Devil's Playground, A Novel of Old Montana and the Creation of Yellowstone Park, by Robert C. Bartsch

Review ''In this novel, Robert Bartsch mixes the creation of the world's first national park, Yellowstone, into the larger, deeper, and wilder history of Montana: mountain men, gold prospectors, business tycoons, and explorers, lynch mobs, an Indian massacre, and a grueling survival ordeal in the wilderness all swirl and bubble like one of Yellowstone's geyser basins.'' --Dayton Duncan, author of The National Parks: America's Best Idea, Seed of the Future, and four other books on the American West''This story details the trials and triumphs that both plagued and rewarded early seekers of fame, fortune, and prosperity in the 1860s frontier landscape of Montana and Wyoming. Filled with daring explorations of the frontier wilderness, dangerous encounters with Indians, rugged American individualism, mining booms and busts, banking and financial shenanigans, vigilante justice, and an illicit love affair, this novel will capture and seize your imagination with unrelenting western frontier spirit, Montana's promising gold rush days, and a host of impulses that would lead to the creation of America's Wonderland: Yellowstone National Park.'' --Elizabeth Watry, Western historian and author of Women in Wonderland: Lives, Legends, and Legacies of Yellowstone National Park''With claim jumpers, Indians defending their territory, and treacherous sheriffs, the goldfields of Montana are just as hazardous as the boiling geysers of Yellowstone. Robert Bartsch explores this beautiful, often deadly region in The Devil's Playground. Mr. Bartsch is clearly familiar with the area and thoroughly researched its complex history for his debut novel. It's tough to keep such a broad-ranging story and large cast of characters focused, but Mr. Bartsch does a fine job, and writes gripping tales of survival. If you enjoy tales of the Old West, give The Devil's Playground a try.'' --Historical Novel Review Magazine, February 2016

About the Author Robert C. Bartsch is a retired veterinary pathologist who lives and plays most of the year near Yellowstone Park with his wife Marjorie. Writing an historical novel about an area he knows and loves has been a long term dream.

His detail of the struggles of the frontiersmen caused me to feel as if I was going through it myself and I came away with a muc By Suzanne Watson This book is a "must" read for anyone interested in Yellowstone Park and its surroundings. Bartsch has done extensive research and brings the characters and geography to life in this engaging novel. True to the historical novel genre, the reader will learn much about a time and place through the eyes of both real and fictional people. His detail of the struggles of the frontiersmen caused me to feel as if I was going through it myself and I came away with a much better appreciation of just how hard it was to settle this area. Well done!

You will appreciate Yellowstone Park even more after reading this book By Glamano A very interesting mix of history, geography, & life on the frontier, along with the authors own creative story line make this a fun book to read while making the reader think twice about how Yellowstone Park came to be.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Devil's Playground is an amazing trip through history By DB The Devil's Playground is an amazing trip through history, written in a conversational style by Bartch who obviously, has done extensive research into the events and characters to develop an engaging story of the creation of Yellowstone Park. The author takes you through the history with the narratives used by the principals at the time which makes the otherwise rather drab history come alive. The font size is small for the older reader but the lively story line nudges you along nicely. The book is enhanced by old photographs of the characters which helps the reader relate to their roles in the story. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the West and especially, the story of Yellowstone Park. It is a good read.

Excerpt from Ethnographical Survey of the Miskito and Sumu Indians of Honduras and NicaraguaThe Miskito and Sumu inhabit the Atlantic side of Honduras and Nicaragua, from Rio Tinto or Black River (lat. 15° 50' N.) to Rio Punta Gorda (lat. 11° 30' N.). While the Miskito are found chiefly along the coast the Sumu are an inland tribe and extend westward within a short distance from the settlements of the Spanish-speaking population.Together these two tribes occupy the larger part of the vast region generally known by the name of Mosquito Coast. This territory reaches from Cabo Honduras, near Trujillo, to Rio San Juan, at the Costa Rica boundary; that is, from the eleventh to the sixteenth degree north, an extension of about 550 miles by sea. From Cabo Honduras the coast runs at first in an easterly direction, then southeast as far as Cabo Gracias a Dios, whence it extends nearly due south.Columbus, who discovered the country in 1502, gave the name Costa de Orejas "Coast of the Ears" to that part situated to the west of Cabo Gracias a Dios. The southern district of the Mosquito Coast became known in those days as Cariay or Cariari, Veragua or Keragua, Castilla del Oro "Golden Castile." These names were superseded by the Spanish-Mexican terms Taguzgalpa and Tologalpa, which stuck practically throughout the colonial period.The-name "Mosquito Coast" (Mosquito Territory or Mosquito Shore), employed by the English, has been taken from that of the principal Indian tribe, the Miskito, erroneously called Mosquito; the Spaniards translated it into Mosquitia and Costa de Mosquitos (Costa Mosquita). Many believe that this name has arisen from the numerous mosquitoes to be found in the country, while others think that the small islands off the coast, "which lie as thick as mosquitoes," may have caused the appellation.Orography. - The shore of the Mosquito Coast is partly alluvial and partly coralline; to the south of Cabo Gracias a Dios the land is gaining on the sea, but to the north of that cape the reverse appears to be the case.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Marsha Coupe A good friend introduced me to Jean Mansfield’s books and videos several years ago. Much as I adore cooking, I never considered making cheese until Jean showed me the fun I’d been missing. With her skillful guidance, I quickly found myself wholly smitten with this ancient art.Once content to buy cheese from my local fromagerie, more often than not I find myself reaching for Jean’s recipes and tips for culinary inspiration. Her handy checklist and step-by-step instruction instill confidence amongst the most reticent fromagère.This book is as close as you can get to having a master cheesemaker in the kitchen with you. Jean has thought of everything the novice and skilled cheesemaker needs to know. She offers the practical advice only someone with decades of hands-on-experience can impart. I especially appreciate her chapter on “What Went Wrong.” All cookery books should have a section like this but they never do. Knowing what can go wrong helps us avoid some of the common pitfalls encountered when mastering a new skill. While you probably won’t make all fifty plus cheeses featured here, you will get a lot of pleasure and practical tutoring from this exceptionally detailed book. Now everybody can make cheese with Jean Mansfield, even if you’re not lucky enough to live in New Zealand.
