About the Author Jota Leal was born in a humble little town in eastern Venezuela, 38 years ago. He began drawing and painting at a very young age and never studied fine art. He attempted to sit in class as a child of six, but he ran away after being forced to paint plastic fruit and empty bottles. In 2001 Jota traveled to Spain and lived there, immersing himself in the history and technique of art. He then returned to his hometown in Venezuela, where he received the Caricaturist of the Year Award for 2003. His art follows the grand tradition of the great portrait painters of the past, as well as the more recent caricature masters.Jota's oeuvre is ranked alongside the likes of Honoré Daumier and Otto Dix. His sense of humor shows the delicate whimsy of a Max Beerbohn or Al Hirschfeld, but with a more fully rendered painting style. His amazing portraits of The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, John Malkovitch, Al Pacino as Scarface, Babe Ruth, and others are classics of their kind. He has a style that can stand on its own and it's pleasure to see his portraits.About Face is a 80-page hardcover the collects Jota Leal's portrait paintings. The art is breathtaking. There's the caricature style that distorts the features and there's also the realism behind the brush strokes. The skin textures or even the sweat beads look so convincing, as if the character has life. Many of the figures are of movie stars and singers, such as the Rolling Stone, Elvis, Jack Nicholson, Michael Jordan, Walken. There are also other characters like Bazooka Betty, Dali, Joker, Godfather and many others I do not know.Some paintings are drawn in the old masters style of chiaroscuro while others are more textural. The way the light and shadow is handled is fantastic. I mean, just look at the Dali painting on the cover.The only downside of the book is it left out the sizes of the paintings. It would be awesome to see the original paintings in person when they are already so good in the book.This is a fantastic artbook.

Have only glanced at it (got it for Christmas) but from what I've seen so far the faces are squashed, squeezed and almost pulverized - yet RECOGNIZABLE. OMG - I am very impressed! I highly recommend this one, if you like caricatures... which I do! Can't wait to read every word in it and then really study every face. HOW does he DO this????? (This is about my 12th book on caricatures (mostly learning how to do them) that I've purchased. This is not a book on how to do them, though.

Review Greenfield does a superb job of showing the inner thought processes of someone with a mental illness.  He puts a real face to the label mental illness that is likable and someone you have compassion for instead of what is often portrayed in the media.  There were so many little nuggets of wisdom scatterred throughout the book that gave much food for thought.   Days after finishing the story, I am still having "aha" moments.  I highly recommend checking it out.Crafty Mom Zen Book Blog

Recommended: Homeward Bound by Josh Greenfield By Helen Krim This book, Homeward Bound, is much more compelling than the earlier, The Obsessive Chronicles. I am not sure what it is in the writing that is different, but I had a hard time putting it down. It may be that the focus of the book is not exclusively on Jordan Fineman, the protagonist, but also on Jordan's efforts to cope with his dying Father. The reader is drawn into the universal drama of coping with the death of someone we love, and therefore can empathize more fully with Jordan. There are a few typos an editor should have caught, but they didn't distract me from the power of the writing. I am looking forward to Greenfield's next novel.

By John Haviland Although one in four of us will suffer some mental illness during our lifetime, so few of us have both the mindfulness( 1/3 never improve at all) or the sincerity to write about it as those who do recover often choose to forget those dark periods of their lives. Josh Greenfield is one of those rare writers who illuminates the secret world of mental illness describing the pain, loneliness and boredom of a mental patient . It is no wonder to me, that many severely affected would rather continue in their fantasies or listen to the voices in their heads than attempt this arduous task of recovery.

By Donald Orosco I live by the Rocky Mountains so I have always cooked with foil, but this book takes it to a new level. I like the idea of making these meals ahead of time then just throwing them on the grill (I usually cook it right over the fire).This is a must for anyone who wants easy, delicious meals when camping!

Though I had prepared tasty food after struggling for hours, the cleaning process was really exhausting. I love food so I love to cook, but it should be fun and easy. I'm glad that I downloaded this book. It's a totally different type of approach which I have never tried before. The recipes seem to be very easy and quick and the foil saves a lot of preparation time! The instructions are also easy to understand. All the recipes are unique and sounds delicious. Loved it.

Just in time for this holiday season By JMK The book is not only a pictorial of the time, but a real anthropological piece of work reflecting major change in the music and culture of that time period. The images and text are excellent. Just in time for this holiday season. A must have for anyone who lived during that time period. Kudos to Marcia Resnick and Victor Bockris!

Untitled By Christian Schlect A great book on the life work of a master painter.Christopher Rothko writes in a personal voice about his famous father's techniques and vision as they evolved over a fruitful working life. Color, form, and meaning are central topics explored with deep insight and passion. Most often blood lines thin: this is not the case here with this talented author.The book is neither a biography of Mark Rothko nor is it simply restricted to his art. For example,the sorry handling by today's museums of works of art on paper is discussed.Anyone interested in modern art, and especially that of Mark Rothko, should buy and read this book.

Variations on Rothko By Janet Mark Rothko's work has always drawn me, so I was particularly pleased to see this intimate view from his son Christopher. The author offers a series of 18 essays that give readers a fascinating glimpse into Mark Rothko's methods, the role of music, his vision of abstract expressionism and color field and their role in modern art, the role of family and critics, and so much more. I was unaware that the artist wrote extensively in the 1930's and 40's, so the inclusion of the material really made the book that much more interesting. It is not a biography per se, but is an intriguing reference piece.I think this book is well written, it's not one you can read in one sitting, as it takes some time to digest. It belongs on any Rothko lover's shelf, as well as anyone with an interest in Modern Art.I was lucky enough to request and receive my copy through NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

By ed rumbaugh Another book about the painter Mark Rothko ? Why you may ask......this one is different, it's written by his son Christopher Rothko. He was only six when his father died, so what can he know about the paintings ? This book "from the inside out" is the story, his life long discovering of who Mark Rothko was. It's written in a language that is straight forward and easier to understand that the intellectual critic that's all brain and no heart. The book has plenty of substance and intelligence but it comes from the heart of a six year old looking with young eyes at his fathers giant paintings. It has story telling depth that other Rothko books do not have. The chapters on Humor, Music and Stacked are worth it just by themselves.

Nyquist While the book itself is absolutely fascinating ( And has been referred to by the likes of Thomas Jefferson), it is in the public domain; the text in its entirety is freely available online. Just do a Google search for the title. As such, I am at a loss as to why it is being sold, and at such a high price to boot. I can see the appeal of a hard copy of a book like this; but if going for the eBook version, I'd recommend going with something that is free. like the project Gutenberg rendition.

What this book provides is brewing history that does not know it is history. By that I mean that the author is writing from the point of view of a serious practitioner of his craft communicating to a contemporary audience. This is much more useful than filtered and packaged history from a modern point of view.The reader is given a very precise description of the methods of brewing that were considered the most advanced at the time of publication (1804).From the start of the preface when the author speaks of how useful the new invention of the theromometer is, the reader is made aware that they are entering a different world. They enter a world where the understanding of biology and chemistry are radically different from that of the current world (ex: fire was believed to flow through pores in the kettle and infuse the water to make it boil). The astute reader will gain an appreciation of the limitations brewers of the time faced and a greater understanding of how and why brewing processes evolved toward today's techniques. Plus, more than a few ideas for experimentation.The language is a bit different from today's English so the reader will be faced with many archaic terms and spellings. Fortunately, the first chapter is a glossary. After that, head for the OED.To sum up: This is great history and food for experimentation for the adventurous brewer.

But this particular edition looks as if someone has simply zeroxed a copy of the original edition (and it isn't even a very nice copy). I would suggest buying this one used rather than this version.

Poems of Pleasure By A Customer Ella Wheeler Wilcox is an amazing poet that allows her readers to feel exactly what she was feeling at the time she wrote this wonderful prose. "Solitude" is an wonderful poem with ideas that will always timeless and true.

Check out The Birth of the Opal for the poem that convinced me right off the bat that she was a master of her craft. Contemporary poets who write in the romantic tradition (and are not afraid to rhyme) will find Willcox to be a great inspiration.

What would you do?Well, if you are like Andrew Greig, notwithstanding lack of climbing experience, you find the invitation hard to resist, especially since the mountaineer who invites you, Mal Duff, is personally willing to put you through the paces on some of the local peaks to help you get into the groove of climbing. Before you know it, you find yourself on expedition in the Karakoram Himalayas headed to the Mustagh Tower.This book is the author's account of how he found himself on a high altitude climbing expedition, what he did to train and get in shape for it, what he did when he got there, and what his perceptions were, as a former arm chair climber, of the expedition experience and climbing at high altitude.His account is gritty, realistic, and he tells it the way he sees it, warts and all. Well written, though narrow in scope, it celebrates the roller coaster existence of being on a real live adventure ride that is the lot of expeditioners everywhere.

Interesting idea, unevenly written By Gwilym Archer The idea behind Summit Fever sounds promising - a writer with no climbing experience is invited to join a Himalayan expedition. Andrew Greig is given a few lessons on winter technique in Scotland and then it's off to the Karakoram with a motley crew of climbers and trekkers to tackle the Mustagh Tower, but money problems and discord nearly wreck the trip. There's enough here for a really good book, but the author quickly loses his writer's perspective in a growing desire to fit in with the 'bin-men'. I found the endless use of mid-80's British climbing scene slang tiresome (it's in almost every conversation once Andrew Greig reaches base camp), and instead of observing the climbers, Greig tries to think and feel the way they do, which tends to defeat the whole point of having a non-climber write about climbing. There are some highlights though, especially early on in the book when everything is a fresh experience for the author, and he sees the climbers through the eyes of a sympathetic and observant outsider.
