Since Dash diet is too strict of a diet I did not know what foods to eat and how to eat them. This recipe book eliminated that problem for me. I am looking forward to seeing it! ***I was a fan of Emma Donoghue since reading Slammerkin many years ago.I started this book this morning and just put it down. I was glad it was a holiday and I had nowhere to go! I just couldn't stop going back to it until it was finished.I was hooked upon reading the first paragraph, 'Today I'm five. I was four last night going to sleep in Wardrobe, but when I wake up in Bed in the dark I'm changed to five, abracadabra. Before that I was three, then two, then one, then zero. "Was I minus numbers?"'And the story of Jack and Ma begins. The entire story is told from the perspective of Jack, a just-turned five-year-old who is living in Room with his Ma. The only thing Jack has known is Ma and Room. His day is spent utilizing the few things they have, the songs and stories his Ma remembers and the five picture books he's had read to him over and over.Imagine being a parent living in an 10 x 10 foot room for years, trying to survive while keeping your baby growing, safe and entertained. Imagine Jack, a child who has only ever known Ma (and the late night visits from 'Old Nick' who he only sees from his vantage point in a wardrobe). Life is good for him since he knows nothing else. Empty egg shells become a snake when threaded together, empty toilet rolls become a maze when taped together, Phys Ed is sometimes Track which goes around Bed from Wardrobe to Lamp.For Jack, his days were filled with 'thousands of things to do'; for his mom, her days were filled with the knowledge of what was outside of Room before her captivity.Two different perspectives, two ways of looking at life.Donoghue has done an amazing job of letting us think like a isolated, innocent boy whose life is turned upside down when he learns that Outside of Room is a big world. Up until his 5th birthday, his world was balanced, controlled and he missed nothing since he didn't know of anything else. Everything beyond the room was Outer Space. Once he was told that the there was so much more out there, fear of the unknown crept into his world.What a wonderful job of creating their little world, of letting us into how Ma's imagination taught Jack, kept him safe, and kept him entertained. If you have children and have ever had to wait in a doctor's office or somewhere else for a few hours, it is sometimes an exhausting job of coming up with games to play to pass the time. Imagine that feat everyday, all day for years.I had such respect for Ma as she taught Jack about so many things in a world he didn't know. Her imagination for passing the time with games using so few resources was incredible. Her love of Jack so deep and primal it made me hug my kids many more times today than usual.And just when you think that escaping is the best thing for them, imagine what it feels like to a boy who has only known Room.This was a fantastic story, imaginative, creative, unique and beautifully written. I never tired of reading from Jack's perspective.I was reminded of what the world could look like from the perspective of a small child. It makes a parent want to be more kind with their words, more respectful of what their child's needs are, and more understanding when things seem confusing.And if you think this is really contrived and just not possible, just google the name Josef Fritzl - a real life horror far greater than Room.A wonderful book from an already favorite author.

It's narrated by a five year old boy (Jack), who has spent his entire life living inside a small room where he and his mother are held prisoner. If you want to read the book knowing no more of the plot than that, skip to the next paragraph. His mother was abducted at the age of 19 and has been repeatedly raped: Jack being born some 2 years later. Jack's mother is frequently depressed and desperate to escape. However she has protected Jack from the realities of their situation and one of the book's central ideas is that when you know no better, you always think the world that you live in is normal and it will still represent home to you.Having a child narrate the book is very clever in many ways. Jack is oblivious to the heroic efforts that his mother makes to protect and entertain him, but these are obvious to the reader. However he never really worked as a narrator for me. He starts the book speaking in quite broken english but quickly leaves that affectation behind. I realize that he was meant to be a highly developed child in some areas while very behind in others. But I couldn't reconcile a child who knew words like omnivore, nutritional and antenna and then at other times would describe something as "the hurtest". The first time he sees his mother vomiting he describes it as "stuff falling out of her mouth like spit but much thicker", but next moment he's calling it vomit and using the word freely from then on. All these inconsistencies kept interrupting the flow of the book for me. There were also times when I would like to have been given a better insight into the reasons for his mother's actions, which the choice of narrator made impossible.It's a story with two distinct acts, punctuated by a nerve-wracking section in the middle. I felt that the story loses momentum in the second half of the book, petering out towards the end.This is one of those books that sucks you into its world and makes you reconsider your own. It's a quick read that's highly absorbing. I can understand why so many people think that it's brilliant, but I only found it good, not great.

Annoying 5-year-old narrator makes reading this book feel like a bad toothache By A real pageturner My three-star rating is an average, based on five stars for the story and one star for the way the story is told.The premise of the story is fascinating (disturbing, but fascinating if you can get past the disturbing part), and the way Donoghue has imagined herself into the minds of people to whom the unimaginable has happened is truly remarkable.However, I found the voice of the 5-year-old first-person narrator incredibly annoying. The use of that voice might have been interesting if Donoghue had done it for a chapter or two -- or maybe alternated the child's voice with the mother's voice -- but over the course of an entire novel, the ceaseless childish voice came to have the effect on me of chalk on a blackboard. (And no, I don't hate children; I find many of them delightful, I just don't think they should be narrating novels for adults.)To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, I've written a paragraph in which I've tried to imitate the style in which the book is written. If you can get through the paragraph without wanting to throw something at your computer, then by all means read the book; if you can't, then maybe you should think twice about reading the book.Why nobody warned me about the awful of reading a story telled by a 5-year-old child? If I'd knowed, I would have putted Book back on Shelf and runned away, hippity-hop like the Runaway Bunny. Silly Me, I readed all of Book because lots of people telled me about the good of it, so I thinked it would get better in a little bit. No way Jose, Book just goed on and on like this for 321 excruciating pages. I know what excruciating means because that's what Ma says it feels like when Tooth hurts really bad, and after reading this book I knowed what she meaned. Why Emma Donoghue made this choice? I've readed lots of books else by her, but Room is my worst favorite of all the books she writed.

By Miramar Bob At first I was disappointed when I saw and tried to read the FOREWARD which had the imitation computer script font, which is worthless to a speed reader as myself. But turning just one page I saw an easy to read list of ingredients, and easily understood instructions, in a nice standard font! [I should not have read this excellent ebook when I was hungry. The Cuban Sandwich almost forced me to run to my grocery store, but I overcame the desire until I read the Deviled Burgers.] I completed my examination of this excellent source after my meal, and I plan to keep it close, on the desktop of my kitchen computer. There are 50 different sandwiches listed.

About the Author Galdós era el décimo hijo de un coronel del ejército, Sebastián Pérez, y de Dolores Galdós. En 1852 ingresó en el Colegio de San Agustín, que aplicaba una pedagogía muy avanzada para la época. Obtuvo el título de bachiller en Artes en 1862, en el Instituto de La Laguna, y empezó a publicar poemas satíricos, ensayos y cuentos en la prensa local. También se destacó por su interés por el dibujo y la pintura. En septiembre de 1862 Galdós se fue a vivir a Madrid y se matriculó en la universidad. Allí conoció al fundador de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, Francisco Giner de los Ríos, que le alentó a escribir y le hizo conocer el krausismo. Por entonces frecuentó los teatros de Madrid y organizó la «Tertulia Canaria». En 1865 empezó a escribir en los periódicos La Nación y El Debate, y en la Revista del Movimiento Intelectual de Europa. Hacia 1867 hizo su primer viaje al extranjero, como corresponsal en París en la Exposición Universal. Galdós publicó en 1870 La Fontana de Oro, su primera novela. La Sombra fue publicada en noviembre de 1870 por entregas en La Revista de España. Y en 1873 comenzó a publicar la que se puede considerar su obra maestra, los Episodios nacionales, donde refleja la vida íntima de los españoles del siglo XIX y los acontecimientos de la historia nacional que marcaron el destino de España. La obra tiene cuarenta y seis episodios en cinco series de diez novelas cada una, salvo la última, inconclusa. Empiezan con la batalla de Trafalgar y terminan con la Restauración borbónica en España. Tuvo una hija natural en 1891 de una madre que se suicidó, Lorenza Cobián. Y se relacionó con la actriz Concha Morell y la novelista Emilia Pardo Bazán. Galdós murió en su casa de la calle Hilarión Eslava de Madrid el 4 de enero de 1920.

By Book Referees Our favorite characters are back in the finale we all been waiting for.This green-eyed beauty might look sweet but don't get it twisted she is as poisonous as they come. Jayde has her eye on a special man & nothing, or no one will stop her from getting who she wants and her connections makes it that much easier.After fighting like hell for respect, Tatum has finally got what she dreamed about her man and her engagement. Everything is starting to look up for them, but there is always a storm before the sunshine.Sasha hasn't been the good girl she is perceived to be, with more secrets than the law allows she is finally trying to right her wrong and get her life back on track. Although she has her man Chauncey by her side, she can't help to notice the distance between them. Sasha is ready to handle things once and for all.In this finale, these ladies will have to come together to prove love is thicker than water.I love the growth that I have seen from Takerra Allen. Her books are like no other. They pull you in from page one and don't let you go until the end often have the book still on your mind forever. I love the characters and the development of them throughout the series. I can't wait to see what else this author has in store.

Puts Allen In A Class All By Herself By Montoya_Mayan This third installment of the Thicker Than Water series puts Takerra Allen in a class all by herself. This was filled with intrigue, violence, sex, deception, and numerous deaths. We learn a lot about the main characters, Sasha and Tatum, and the men in their lives, Chauncey and Respect. We also find out which couple has what it takes to truly go the distance--and so much more.

It was a great ending to a great series and it is a page turner. Ms. Allen does an excellent job addressing the aspects of street life. Tatum was the true definition of a woman. She displayed great strength and courage when everyone would have understood if she broke down. I loved Tatum more than any other female character in this series. She was dealt a hand that contained hurt, betrayal, and emotional turmoil. But she played that hand instead of allowing the hand to play her! I love the way Ms. Allen writes her stories. She holds nothing back and she takes her readers on a ride that leaves them wanting more! Great job!

Voglewede I've two picky eaters at home (husband and toddler) who cringe at the sight of green or remotely healthy and so have been embarking on a quest to broaden our tables horizons. This book has been a huge hit amongst my "discerning" palette household with very few substitutions or swaps! Highly recommend for those who are looking to branch out from boxed and processed meals like we are, or rather I am. :) (insert evil mom laugh)

Delicious meals, complete with nutritional info and tips and tricks, that don't leave you feeling hungry. The photos are beautiful, the recipes are tasty yet easy enough for the home cook and the writing is friendly and approachable.

Not for the beginner, but okay for more experienced and those looking for inspiration By scooter123 So, I was excited because part of the selling point for this book was that there were pictures for all of the recipes and that's not true. There are some good photos for some of the base recipes but not all. I was hoping/ thinking this would be similar to jialin tian's cookbooks choux temptations where there are step by step photos showing you how to put it together. I don't necessarily agree with some of the previous reviews where they said there were too many steps or layers in the desserts (Adriano's recipes are very intricate, that's the nature of what he makes and what makes his stuff so amazing). Instead this book could be greatly improved by having photo guides to help take out some of the confusion some may have about how to put them together. My other thing is that make sure you're okay and comfortable with a lot of the basics, in terms of techniques and methods. Overall I like this book I think its very inspiring, so if you're looking for some fun inspiration and ideas this would be a good choice. If you're just getting into baking or French style pastries and need techniques this shouldn't be your first purchase.

About the Author

Duff Goldman studied at the Corcoran School in Washington, D.C., and was a young graffiti artist of some notoriety. He started working for acclaimed Baltimore chef Cindy Wolf while attending the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He studied pastries at the Culinary Institute of America and worked at the French Laundry under acclaimed pastry chef Steven Durfee, at the Vail Cascade Hotel and Resort, and at Todd English's Olives restaurant in Washington, D.C., before opening Charm City Cakes in Baltimore in 2000. Duff is also a sculptor and artist, and a musician who plays bass in the rock band . . . soihadto . . . . He lives in Baltimore, Maryland.

Snyder I recently saw this book in a bookstore, curled up in a wing chair, and spent an hour pouring over the recipes - I had to have this book by Duff Goldman! He writes just like he talks on the Ace of Cakes Show - funny, upbeat, calming, so-you have the recipe now just go ahead and jump off the cliff type of humor. Did I say that I had to have this book! I have always enjoyed baking breads and pies, but upon my return from a recent trip to Ireland, I was fired up to bake Scones and Quick Seedy Breads so I have been on a hunt for a new baking adventure...........and then I discovered Duff's new book.Duff shares his background, work ethic and some kitchen experiences that are heartwarming. This book and the recipes included will make you want to jump into the kitchen and "Bake something". I am also going to share this book with my adult children - He is a true inspiration. Would you believe he uses organic blueberries in his sourdough starter? His explanation of a variety of flours and leavening ingredients is welcome.As I work my way through Duff's book, I will update my review. Although I am an experienced baker, I know that I will have to change some of my ingredients (no self-rising flour) and some of my techniques (Overmixing) but it should be a great tasting adventure.

By BuyAllTheThings I'm a huge fan of Duff Goldman and think of him and his Charm City Cakes crew as not just bakers, but artists. So I was worried that being as talented as he is, he wouldn't be able to break down the art form into something understandable for weekend bakers like myself. Well, I was wrong to worry. The recipes are mostly easy to follow, for both novice and experienced bakers. If you've only ever baked a slice and bake chocolate chip cookie, you'll definitely find many challenges in here, but plenty of guidance. If you're more experienced and know a thing or two about baking, this book is probably right on your level.His bar and cookie recipes look easy to moderately challenging. He's got easy bread recipes for people who've never worked with yeast, and more complicated recipes (sourdough, anybody?) for those who are ready. I'm both nervous and excited to try to create my first sourdough starter (which I didn't even know was a thing).His cake decorating section I felt deviated from the overall aim of the book (i.e., easy and non-intimidating). I would have liked less info on fondant and project ideas, and more instruction on how to frost cake, do pretty piping with buttercream, and maybe some sprinkle work. I'll probably not delve into fondant work unless I take a class.I'm most excited to try his cinnamon roll recipe and his Swiss buttercream recipe. Least excited about anything fondant related. If you're worried you might not learn any new techniques, I'd still recommend you pick this up for the great recipes and the adorable narrative that Duff and co-author Sara provide.Update: cinnamon roll recipe was easy enough to follow. My boyfriend complained that they were too sweet and needed more time in the oven. This is after I had already extended the baking time.Popcorn ball recipe produced an addictive snack that I had to give away to get out of the house. Win.The "good-a** fudge" recipe called for a candy thermometer. I followed the recipe precisely and my fudge never set. After several hours of waiting, I poured the chocolate goo back in the pot and boiled again, this time letting it sit at the temp and bubble for a bit longer. We'll see if it sets.Tonight I made the vanilla birthday cake and American butter cream. Buttercream tasted like eating a stick of butter and the cake was a little dense and not very sweet. Great textures but no flavor.I'm disappointed that while the recipes are precise, there seem to be flaws. I actually found a mistake in the fudge recipe. It calls for you to set up a bowl of cold water in step one, but never tells you what to do with it.

About the Author

Jan Stites is the author of the novels Edgewise and Reading the Sweet Oak. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and a master’s degree from Purdue University, both in history and English. She has held a multitude of jobs, including screenwriter, screenwriting instructor at San Francisco State University and the University of California–Berkeley, waitress, secretary, middle school teacher, scuba diving travel writer, journalist, transcriber for doctors and documentary filmmakers, teacher in Kenya and the Yucatán, and translator for American doctors in Mexico. She is from Missouri, where she has vacationed extensively in the Ozarks. She currently resides in Northern California with her husband.

Only A Truly Gifted Storyteller Can Evoke So Much Emotions By Kim Scott Beautifully written with the most endearing characters I've encountered in quite some time. Set against the enchanting backdrop of the Ozarks, Reading The Sweet Oak is a novel of family, friendship, love, and the ability to forgive not only others but one's self, as well as a journey of self-discovery. Each of the five women are so well-developed and true to life that I felt as though each one was an old friend with unique qualities and personal experiences that I could easily identify with on some level. Whether it be BJ's diagnosis of ELS (Empty Life Syndrome), Ruby's desire to see her grand-daughter happily married, Pearl's struggle with accepting her grandson's recent revelation, Jen's strained relationship with her mother, or Tulsa's aversion to romance in general, each of these women are absolutely endearing and are sure to tug at any reader's heart. However, the most prevailing characteristic of this novel is the author's ability to evoke such a wide array of emotions; I found myself often laughing aloud and simultaneously reaching for a box of tissues. Only a truly gifted and talented writer can evoke such emotions. With a well-developed plot filled with unsuspecting twists and turns throughout, this would certainly make for an excellent reading group selection and questions for discussions are provided as well. By MELINDA MAXWELL-SMITH Ruby's romance novel book club, in "Reading the Sweet Oak," becomes a warm and delightful touchstone for this multi-generational and varied life-experience group to share wisdom, support, and challenges to become the women they were meant to be. I love the engagement of all my senses as Tulsa reads the Sweet Oak River, or fails to, when flustered by infatuation. Suspenseful, heart-warming, sticks to my heart's ribs, I finished this book in two days! Didn't want to stop reading!

Branfield Set against the gorgeous backdrop of the Ozarks, Reading the Sweet Oak is a beautiful novel of family, friendship and love. This engrossing novel by Jan Stites is a wonderful journey of self-discovery for all of the characters after they form a romance novel book club. It is a thought-provoking and charming story that I strongly recommend to readers of contemporary women’s fiction.Tulsa Riley and her grandmother Ruby love their home on the banks of the Sweet Oak River. Together, they run a canoeing and cabin rental business and although it is risky decision, they decide to purchase an adjacent property when the opportunity arises. With the help of her half-brother, Guy Smith, Tulsa devises a clever advertising strategy to draw in new customers but they are fighting an uphill battle when bad weather strikes and a neighbor sets out to destroy their business. In the midst of trouble, Ruby’s ingenious plan to use a romance novel book club to convince Tulsa to open her heart to love seems to be working after Tulsa meets Slade Morrison, a wealthy business who comes to Sweet Oak in search of adventure.The romance novel book club is a clever plot device and the members range from Tulsa’s age on up to Ruby’s. Each are facing their own unique set of challenges and the books that Ruby selects vary from contemporary to historical and the lead characters are as varied as the storylines. After completing each book, the women apply the lessons they learn to their own lives, often with surprising results.Tulsa’s resistance to Ruby’s attempts to convince her to read the selections is fruitless and she is definitely a reluctant participant. If you like making and using fondant you will like this book By Trudy Mintun I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.The recipes in this book all use fondant. If you like making and using fondant you will like this book. That is why I gave it 3 stars. Someone might like it a lot because of the fondant. For me I didn't like it.

The recipes sounded good as well. if you know how to work with fondant it is for you.
